a Hews from San Fra acisco. ‘Saw Fran‘anco, July 28, 1963. ‘There is an active demand for fig iron, coal oils and Petroleum, with advanced pricesfor the former. Saw Francisco, July 29, 1848. Cole, war democrat, i# elected to Congress from Wash- fmgton Territory. Raynor was the republi.an candidate. Drafting in Philadelpnia. Pamavmrata, July 30, 1863, ‘Three wards underwent the process of the draft to- d@ay—the First, the Sixth and the Eleventh. As usual, everything passed off quietly. FCCC“ ‘EC_C_t*?i FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Tuavaspay, July 30—6 P. M. Money is easier again, partly in consequence of the heavy sales of stocks this morning, which led to large loans being paid off, and partly in con- sequence of the notice that conversions of cur- rency are to he indefinitely continued. Experience has proved that this method of raising money achieves its purpose without disturbing the money market; and, on the other hand, the notice that the privilege will not expire at any fixed time operates to eheck the rush for 5-20 bonds, which at one time threatened to embarrass borrowers. Call Joana to-day are rather 5 than 6 per cent; debt certificates are 44 better, and mercantile paper is wanted at 5 per cent for prime names, Gold continues inanimate. It rose at midday to-day to 128, closing at five P.M. at 127%. Ex- change was rather more in request, and the quota- tion of the afternoon was about 14034 for bankers’ bills. There has been but little speculation in ex- change of late, and the supply of bills on the mar- ket is considerably reduced, If, however, the im- Pportaiiona eontinue light, bills cannot advance much, unless military reverses should cause the price of gold to rise, There was & healthy reaction in the stock market Srning. Quite a number of operators under- took to realize ha? and prices fell of 4a} er pt all rongd. Erie opened at 104, 04, sold up to before the - gio) reacted to 103% at the morning, and closed at the adjournment at about 103%. New York Central sold as high as 129 be- fore the board, and as low as 126 before the Journment. Comparing the board prices with the closing quotations last evening, we note a decline of 2% in Quicksilver, 34 in Erie preferred, 4 in Hudson, 13% in Harlem, }{ in Reading, 4 in Michi- gan Central, 1 in Southern old, % in guaranteed, ¥% in Illinois Central, 1% in Pittsburg, 1 in Galena, % in Rock Island, 1% im Prairie du Chien, 13% im Fort Wayne, 2% in Terre Haute, 1 in Terre Hante prefer- red, 1 in Chicago and Alton. State stocks were more active, with a good inquiry. Govern- ments were firm. At the close of the morning session a good many orders made their appear- ance to pick up stocks at the decline, and the tone was firmer. The impression appeared to prevail among leading operators that the reaction was healthy symptom, and would bring in new buyers. At the one P.M. call rather better prices ruled, and there was very little stock offered. At the second board priees were {a % lower, mainly, es in the morning, in consequence of sales to realize profits; but at the close of the call it was discovered that there was no more stock offering, and prices rallied sharply on the receipt of some orders from outside. In the present condition of the market, for one man who sells out for the sake of realizing profits two or three new men are al- lured into the speculative arena by the hope of gain; and the very men who sell out cannot remain many days idle, with their money on hand, when such handsome proits are being made by their neighbors in operating. The following were the closing quotations of the day:— Bariem.......123;4 0 124 Bariem pref’. —~ 9120 A meeting of bondholders of the Chicago end Northwestern Railway was held to-day, and the second mortgage bondholders agreed to exchange their bonds for a 7 por cent preferred stock, fund- igg, at the same time, three coupons in advance. The vote was unanimous. The meeting likewise authorized the committee to consolidate with the Prairie du Chien and Milwaukee and St. Paul on satisfactory terms. Committees from the three roads meet this evening at the St. Nicholas, and there scems to be a fair prospect that a consolida- tion will take place. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasary was as follows to-day:— ‘The statements of the banks of the three princi- pal cities of the Union for the last week eompare with the previous one and the corresponding time of:1862 as follows:— York, Juty 28 Pie aT NCEE ITE att 188 July 27. 340.716 Rut ed i 1 a . duly a yeaa Baas ar ais 2 EY ty (468 aH dig seme ea go 949,183 16,460,448 rant srech 283,897,275 72258, 800 ate 166 1a 76g Laat yoar 2 9A, 320,472 188,500,254 46,008,005 20,918,089 ‘The statement of the Boston banks for the Inst week compares with the previous week and for the ee week of 1862 as follows:— 1863. The Schenectady and Catakill Railroad was an fdea of former years. It was then believed that fits construction would greatly facilitate and econo- mize the transportation not only of passengers, but particularly of freighta and produce, by the canals, It was urged that when the numerous lines of road then in embryo, etretching far away towards the great West, and the completion of the eniarzed Erie Canal, should bring their vast acen- toulations of products to the Hudson, this link wonld prove of the highest importance. Events have confirmed that impression. The Western ca- nals aud railroads have thrown upon the enlarged canals an amount of transportation under which thoy literally stagger, and the necessity of inereasg lug its facility for entering the Hudson haa become ebdvious to any one of reflection and observation. To this conviction we owe the recent organization of a company for the construction of the Scheneo- tady and Catekill Roilrond. This orgenization ia ‘ander the eral law, with a capital of one mil- Bon of dollars, its articles of association filed, the tequired percentage paid ia, and the stock books 000 to be opened for subscriptions. A full board af directors are named in the articles of sasocta- tion, chielly residents of Schenectady and Catakill, well known gentlemen of wealth and reapect- adility—D. D. Campbell, of Schenectady, dent; 8. Sherwood Puy, of Catskill, Vieo dent, and Peter Rowe, of Schenectady, eurer. The report of a competent civil engi- meer states that several years since “an examination was made of a route for & canal across the country from Sche- nectady to Catskill, when @ very feasible one was found, heaving the valley of the Mohawk nearly opporite Schenectady, wpon a level sixty feet above the level of the read at Schenectady; from thence to the tide waters of the Hudeop at Catekilh tea descent of two hundred and ninety Axivct, The ditance from Schenectady to Cate kill is about forty miles; the sammit of the road will be about three miles from Schenectady, the necessary grade twenty fect per mile; from thence the average grade to Catskill is eight feet per mile. The route is very direct, and shorter than any travelled road between those places, and no grade need exceed twenty feet per mile. There is probably no route in the State, of the same extent, where a railroad can be graded with more facility ‘and economy, nor is there any route, either occupied or in proxpect, where a better or as good a reward will be offered for the investment necessary for ite construction.” The value and importance of this route will be understood by a comparison of dis- tances and the difference between obstructed and free transportation, From Schenectady to Al- bany by rail is sixteen miles, and thence to Cats- kill thirty-six miles. By canal the difference of distance is still greater. From ‘Schenectady to A}bany twenty-two miles, to Catskill thirty-six mies, to which add the delays of twenty-nine locks and the detentions of the overslaugh, and the distance is fifty-eight miles of delayed and vexatious navigation, against forty rapid miles by rail.
