We arrived at Portland at balf-past foar o'clock on Monday afternoon, and came to anchor abroast the city, ‘and sent @ boat ashore to confer with the civil authorities Tespecting the Tacony and the captors of the cutter Caleb ©usbing. Upon the boat reaching the dock the officers ‘were met by a deputation from the Mayor and Common Council, and taken in a carriage tothe City Hall, Upon arriving there we were informed that the Tacony hai Deen destroyed by fire, and that her officers and crew ‘were confined in Fort Preble, under charge of Major An- @rews. This was indeed good news for us, although we ‘would have been giad to have captured the Tacony and Drought her in as a prize; but we were satisfied that she ‘wasno more. We were then escorted to the Custom House, and had an interview with the Collector, who kindly showed us tho private log of Captain Reed, which 4s indeed a perfect curiosity, containing higuly pictured accounts of al) his captures. ‘The following extracts 1 was allowed to copy, throug the kindness of Collector Jewett. On Sunday evening the Broadway Tabernacie (Rev. Dr. ‘Thompeon’s) was well filled, to listen to an address upon English sympathy with anti-slavery im the United States by Rev. Dr. Massie, of Loudon, who comes as the repre- sentative of four thousand British ministers, with their protest against recoguizing the slaveholders’ confederacy, and their appeal for emancipation. Dr. Thompson briefly introduced Dr. Massie, who proceeded ina lengthy dis course to establish the sovercignty of God, the brotber- hood of man, and the designs of Providence in making America the home of liberty, religion and learnicg. He said he was ashamed that only four thousand British miniators signed the paper sympathizing with the Unitea States in its confiet with slavery; but he affirmed that thousands withheld their signatures from misrepre- sentation, acting under the conviction that the American war had nothing to do with slavery.
