It may well be tmagined that ‘the events.of the past two days caused much astonisn- meat. Less than a year ago a small force of sthe enemy eutered indiana from Kentucky, and after a stay of twelv 0 hours recrossed and escaped. This'time they manifested ‘their regard by making 4 more extonsive rid@and a longer stay, They entered day before yesterday , and are still ‘with us. They have acted so Bebly \that-we are bow Bhowing them every attention im our powor. We ere foeding and lodging them, and at the same time carefully watching the hotels where they stay. No ano designing to do them ony harm shall be al Jowed to get near them, We do not know/how long they ‘may stay with us, Some of then mani{vst.a desire to go to Kentucky; but we-are not yet through with our hos- pitalities. ‘Last week a raid was made into Elizabethtown, Ky., by , What was then supposed to be a force of guerillas, They @id bittie damage except to plunder the stores and help @emeelves to whatever portable property struck their fancy. Horses suffered particularly, they:being a self- moving article of plunder. Medicines, wearing apparel ‘and boots and shoes were also much 10 demand. After a. tay of a ‘ew hours in the town, the rebels moved off to the southward, and it was supposed they:hadrotired to ‘the Cumberland river. They stated that they belonged to Capt. Hind’s company of the Second Kentucky cavalry, ‘ma wore attached to Morgan’s brigade. They were weil ‘emed with sabres, carbines and revolvers, and uniform @ w the regutar uniform of rebel cavalry. They were fetunated trom eighty to one hundred and thirty-strong— probably much pearer the former number. Alter leaving Elizabethtown nothing more was beard from them until on Thuraday last. Word was brought that five hundred rebels were crossing the Obio, near Leavenworth, sixteen miles below this point. Hardly had the news become circulated before another messen ger arrived confirming the statement of the crossing, but placing the rebel strength at three instead of five hun- dred, ‘he Ohio is now ite low, and at Leavenworth St spreads out for nearly mile in width and becomes very shallow. It is at this point that boats frequently run aground during low staves of waier. After crossing. the river the rebels made no delay, but pasted rapidly forward for a raid into the river counties wiord, Orange and Washington counties lwy before them, and into these they pushed as rapidly as poesible, They moved ina compact body, throwing out scouts on each side, for the double purpose of guarding against sur- ise and bringing in any good horses that might be found. Ihis portion of Indiana abounds in gvod horses, and from indications the rebe's had deen ‘well apprised of this fact. They knew the names of such farmers.as had fine stock, and were earnest in their inqui- ries for a Mr. Rraxton, who resides near Paoli, in Orange county. On reaching Paoli, about six o'clock on Friday evening, they immediately commenced a search for horses and medicines, and betore leaving they raneacked every store, takiug whatever they wanted. They found Mr. Braxton, and, not content with taking bis best horses, made him a prisover. ‘Most of their own horses were thin and broken down, ‘and aa fast as they (ound fresh ones they changed saddies {and aband ned their former steeds. Nearly all the horses they leit bore the brand “M. such as is placed upon all the animals of Morgan’s cavairy. They had evidently » geen bard service, Before arriving at Paoli the rebels eutered the town of Vallini, Orleans county, the firgt that lay in their route « Miter leaving the river. Here they deman:'ed food of the + eftizens, and threatened to burn the tiwn in case the de- mand was not complied with. The citizens were not pre- to accommodate such a large number of cuests, and ‘ delay in the pr tion of dinner incensed (he rebele 80 (that they fulfilled their threat of setting the town on fire. As soon as they had done so they moved off, and by th + exertions of tho citizens @ portion of the’ village. ae « waved.from destruction From Paolj, the rebels move: towards Orleans, keeping a their system of stealing as they proceeded. Shortly leaving l'aoii they made a halt of several hours for | + Be purpose of gathering iu horses from places some dis- stance from the road. News of their movements had «Spread like wildfire, und their numbors were magnilied to \awondorful extent.” ‘The Home Guard in all the larger ¢ towns had been ussembjed, and made ready to meet them. ‘Two companies {rom Mitchell, about one hundred stroug, «dtarted as soon as they could be got together, and reached Orleans about one o'clock yesterday morning. At tbat time the rebeis bad completed their balt, and were Hearing of their ad vance, the Mitchell Hoi Guard moved out from -@rieans to meet ahem. About three «o'clock they en- countered them three miles 0.1 from Orleans, and a brisk @kirmish enguej. For fresh troops the Home Guard fought well. but their enemies had the advantage of long sservice. ‘The Home Guard were repulsed. with a loss of @hroe wounded and twelve captured. The skirmish lasted sabout.an hour. ‘The encounter with the force from Mitchell convinced @be. rebels that, their movements were known, and they Deat arotreut in the direction of Salem without attempt to enter Orleans. Shortly after the fight they met Mr.Willims, a respectable eiderly gentieman, well kuown in Orleans county. Mr Wilimms was riding a fine horse hich the rebels enveted. They ordered him to dismount kive up bis horse, und on his reiusal to do so he was it shrough the head and lett dead in the road. The Mitche!| H ome Guard rallied and attempted to pur- ‘Sue the retreating rebels but as they were on foot tbeir Dursuit was of litte avail, A full company C bame cayalry from Crawiord county, led by nae Weodbory, started trom Teavehworth 10 pursuit as s @ Ghocould muster his men. Weowespay, June'24—6'P, M. Money continues quite easy; call loans a 7 per eent. Lenders seem to have got over their fright, and to be: quite willing to accommodate the brokers on the usual margins. Several houses re- fused to allow more than five per cent for money to-day, and there were decidedly more loans at 6 than at 7, There is no change in mercantile pa- per; debt certificates were hardly so strong to-day. Gold was rather better than yesterday. There ia no pressure of gold on the market for sale, and holders seem content to wait. The inquiry isa shade more active than it was. It clesed 143% a 144, Brokers report a more active demand for bills to-day. Bankers’ rate was 1664 a {, some leading houses refusing to draw below 157, Mer- cantile bills sell at 15534 a 156 for very good signa tures, Eveg at 157 bills are relatively cheaper than gold. The stock market was very active this morning, and the tendency of prices was uniformly upward. Hudson, which is the most active fancy of the day, sold at 140—an advance of 4 percent since Inst evening; Erie rose 1, Pacific Mail 34, New York Central 1, Erie preferred %, Michigan Central 1, Southern Ohio %, HWlinois Central 134, Cleveland and Pittaburg 134, Toledo 2%, Rock Island %, | chief | Mississippi and Missouri 3. As yesterday, the excitement was on the New York shares. For Harlem there was a very active and general in- quiry; but the advance in the price was ehecked by a large sale by one house—supposed to be a bear sale. Very little was done in governments, State stocks or railway bonds. After the board the market was steady, and this was its char- acter at the one P. M. session of the public board. Pacific Mail was wanted at an advance of ¥% per cent over the morning price, and Central was also afraction better. Inthe afternoon the market was generally quite active. Erie was % per cent better, Hudson was hardly so strong, Canton better, Cumberland lower, &c., &e. At the close the market was generally better, and was steady at the four P. M. call. For two or three years the railroad has been unable. or unwilling to make terms with the company for the transportation of its coal, and the business has been done through the canal. That hae now been completely destroyed by the rebels— 80 completely, as we learn, that it would take a year and a very large sum of money to repair it. Under these circumstances we presume that the operations of the company will cease altogether, and that the stock will gradually sink until it fol- lows Parker Vein and Phoenix Coal into the do- main of history. There was a time, many years ago, and again in 1858, when shrewd men reposed faith in Cumberland. But for a long time past no one who was conversant with the facts has deemed it worth anything. Ever since 1860 the directors have paid interest on their bonds by speculating in Liverpool coal, and using their yards to store it. Their own legitimate business has not paid expenses for four years. Such a fancy can well be spared from the stock list. We learn that the Harlem Railroad Company have contracted for the iron to be laid down in Broadway. It is to be of a new and unusually substantial pattern. The following table may perhaps help to explain the recent sudden rise in Hudson River stock, and may illustrate the policy of the sales on seller's option at 4 and 5 per cent below the cash price:— Yearly Earnings Marke!
