Tle said he would speak to them in the first verse of the One Hondred and Twenty-first psalm—one of those which bad been recited during the coremony of dedicating that church. Tt runs in these wort T havo rejoiced in the things which wore said to me: we suail enter into the house of the Lord. On the foregoing text the veuerablo prelate spoke as ¢ Mtows:—Fearly beloved brethren, this passage was jut- tered and receivel by the Prophet Vavid under the in- 8 iration of the Livine Spirit, He bad received from God & precept and a communication of that wonderful templo which became the pride—if I'might: so speak—of Zion, and yot it was not for bim to eroct that grand super: structure. He hada promiso, andfhe spoke of it as vith pride, stating that he had rejoiced in the things that suid to him, and that he and bis shou'd enter in the Lord, The structure itself was matu! it , begun and accomplishe! by his son Solo- man; utd ‘certainly we must be astonished when we consider the magnitude, the magnificence, various riches and the whole splendor of that groat temple. And yet this temple was the cnly one 02 the globe at that time dedicated to the service of the true God. Now, in @ remote sense [could almost apply the same words to the circumstances which engage your attention and excite your devotion to-day. Of course there 18 not the same mniflenco—there 18 nothing pecultar to distin- gitish the edifice, which. is just being dedi- cated from the temple ét Jerusalem. —Notwith- standing this there re poiuts of great and (in our favor I would venture to say) superior Comparison. After all we know that the ancient law was only the type of that law which the Redeomer has made universal. The an scribed, but itso ha} ent law was not uecessarily circum- yened that it was retained within the bounds of a singe nation—a chosen — nation, to be sure. But the rew law no bounds, ft extends All nation Wherever there is hu- manity thea is there actually or in possibility the Church of Jesus Christ, Many naiions have not been converted. Somo that wero converted by their want of fidelity to the prescribed Jaws had lst the faith. If you take free will from man there 's nothing of rationality about him. He is # brute or worse, In this state of the case, embracing, more or lees, the comporisin of what is great in the tompte of Jerusalem and whut is great here, { might call your atte tion to the simple jact ef tho’ precious things of tho Jewish temple—its gold &c. But what was the sacrifice offered up ia that temple? It was the sacrifice preparatury or typically of Him who was to. be tho” victim for” the redemption of the world, and He was to found the Church Wi-hout limit, t the ends of the carth,in al) nations Now, what did this temple contain? Jt contained the rods of A , indicating, by divine authority, the power of the priesthood, even under the Jewish law. Now, the Christian law ig much more perfect than the ancient or Jewish. The rod of Aaron has not been lost since the Church has been established, The power of the priest- hod ts felt even where it is deepisod and scorned. ‘The manna of the Jewish Church is the type of that heavenly body which to day, for the first time, is to be consecrated and offered to God aa a memorial of the great sacrifice, Thoy had the type—-we have the reality; and this makes your humbie Church far superior, Yn its spiritual senso @ven, than the great and sacred temploof the Jewish peop e, A respectable denominati » bave used this as a lace of worship, sccording to their system and style. ft seoms they wanted it no longer; and then underabod—ai levst the people of the ooality and of the neighborhood wore of opinion—that it might be yurehased for purpeses of divine worship. And so itis. Rev. Theretore, when wo — mm His namo, instead of saying “this is the body of Christ,”? ‘we have to speak in His name and ray ‘this is my body.” Aftor further explaining some well kao n and incontro- vertible doctrines of the Church; bis Grace went on to say:—This 1s not the time nor place tor me to unlarge apon the events which have so important a bearing upon the unity of (ho ope Christtan church. Nevertholess, if there bea prayer in the beart of a good man it should be that the human race might, by some ineans or other— even miracuousiy—be restored to the fixed form and on the basis of the Church of which the Savior sala that “tho gates of heli shall not prevail against her.” Even in regard to the present condition of our country the idea forces itseli upon every one that there 1s no ceatral point of unity in the firet place, In peony Be Catholics, I may, however, say that they had no i nor part ip bringing about the condition of affairs which now aillicts the land. Of the leading roads | FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpay, June 21, 1863, The money market was active all last week, partly in consequence of the accumulation of an unusually large sum in the Sub-Treasury and part- ly from the combined efforts of money lenders, whose interest is promoted by everything which tends to raise the rate of interest. At one time a concerted policy of calling in loans was adopted by the regular street lenders, which for the mo- ment gave rise to considerable embarrassment ‘mong borrowers and led to some sacrifices of stocks; but yesterday afterngon all the leading houses had money over which they were unable to lend even at six per cent. Merchants find the sup- ply of money quite adequate to meet their re- quirements; the offerings’at bank are very limited indeed, And so long as the present dulness prevails on the Stock Exchange it seems likely that the there are but few which should not pay a dividend in July or August. A few boards of direction will probably commit suicide by swelling their ex- penses so as to evade payment of a dividend in order to enable the presidents and directors to buy stook cheap. Such parties will follow the exam- ple of the presidents of the Harlem and, Rock Is- land. But in most instances it is probable that the public temper will be acknowledged and a fair regard shown for the rights of stockholders, ~ i CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT. Barvrpay, June 20—6 P. M. The rebel forays into Maryland and Pennsylvania caused @ flutter in the gold mar- ket, and at one time it looked as though the dead speculation in gold might be galvanised into life again. But the semblance was deceptive, and the course of the market justifies the belief that nothing short of the capture of Washington, or the utter destruction of the Army of the Potomac, will again give courage to buyers of gold. Ever since the 2d of March the bears in gold have been as steady winners as the bulls were previous to that date, and each reverse of the Union arms has merely enabled them to obtain a better position on the market. This circumstance is in large part due to the condition of the exchange market. Bankers’ bills, which are esteemed by the trade as the equi- valent of gold, have rated steadily at from 1 to 14 per cent below gold. This results, in a considera- ble measure, from the heavy shipments of coin from SaifFrancisco to England direct. It arises, likewise, in some @egree, from the conviction, which is at last forcing itself upon the minds of ‘Hinas—The week's rfoeipta reachodhand the sales, only 83,200, Included in the sales, as reported by Messrs. |.
