i FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Faray, June 19—6 P, M. There was a good deal of apprehension this Morning about money, ard some stocks were Slaughtered at the board from ao nerveus feeling that it might be difficult to carry them. But we eould not learn, at the close of bank honrs, that eitker brokers or speculators who Aad the right ‘Kind of collaseral (ound it impossible to borrow at even per cent. The active inquiry for money which has now prevailed for nome two weeks has had its usual effect in bringing erge amounta into * the street for temporary employment, while, on the other ‘hand, the accumulation of an enormous surplus in the Sub-Treasury has simultaneously checked conversions ef cur- Fency, and compelled the Treasury Depart- ment to recognize and receive a8 moucy certifi- eates of deposit. In commercial circles money is easy; first-class paper sells as before at 5 a 6 per cent. Mebt certificates are better again. Geld ‘wes down this morning to 143, and sold in the atternoon at 143%, 143% and 143. Exchange was quoted 156. 4% for bankers’ signatures up te Mie close of bank hours. The demand is quite ight, and the supply of bills rather in excess @ the inquiry. There was a fair amount of activity on the Stock Exobange this morning, with an irregular move- ment in prices, The bear clique, who have been eeconspicuous as sellere of Eudson, rather ne- glected that stock this morning, apparently con- sidering that they had got it down as low as swas feasible at present, and turned their attention to Pacific Mail, which they succeeded in @epressing 3 a 4 per cent, The object of the echeme is supposed, | to be to squeeze out some Jarge parcels of'these stocks which are understood ‘0 be in the hands ef parties who bought them at fower rates. ‘Thus far ‘the measure has not echieved much in regard ‘to Hudson, and, as the pss day is now only three weeks distant, be some-excitement in the market when py fomes for covering the shorts. Central and Erie were 4 lower et the board, but better afterward. Harlem rose 14% per cent, with some @ppearance of steadiness, Southern old, guar wanteed, Pittsburg, Fort ‘Wayne and Galena were all lower, with @ dull feeling. There was quite a rush to eell Prairie du Chien, ‘and the price fell 4 per cent, without any ‘wery obvious cause. ‘Canton and Cumberland ‘were both lower, and the bond list was weak—the @and grants of the Mississippiand Missouri falling per cent. Missouris were steady; governments ‘were hardly as strong asyesterday. At the close of the board a tame feeling prevailed. In the public board, at one P. M., the market was list- Jess, and the amount of transactions was limited. Erie, however, wag better, selling freely at 93 a 34. in the afternoon Pacific Mail was hammered down te 182; Hudson rose 4 per cent. Inother respeots the market was without important change. At ‘the four P.M, call the market was generally rather better; but the sudden advance in Hudson was not maintained. We presume that the event is decisive against dividends for a long time to come on both the stock and third mortgage bonds of the goad. It indicates the of that party fm the Board of which resisted the nt of interest on the third mortgage in April As it is, the road, with the diminished busi- meses which may now be expected, will have hard ‘work to set aside the money required for neces- @ary repairs. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasury was as follows Mr. Cisco, Assistant Treasurer of the United Btates, gives notice to parties holding thirty or mere coupons of the various loans maturing July 3 to band them in at his office previous to that @ay, and checks will be given for them on the 30th of June after three o’clock P. M. ‘The Bank of Commerce has declared a semi-an- of four per cent, payable on the 6th y, free from government tax. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the @leveland and Toledo Railroad Company, held at Cleveland on the 18th inst., the following gentle- men were elected directors for the ensuing year:—- Jobn Gardiner, James Muson nm, ae ‘oung, H. B. Hurlourt and A. Stone, Jr. of Obio: x jrulije sad A, ©. Jorome, of New York, ond aw 1, of New Tandon, Mesars. Olyphant and Howard, of New York, de- @lined « re-election. The vote of the shareholders was also taken on the question of traffic with the other Lake Shore veads, and was concurred In by a vote of 58,091 to 4,000 shares. This consolidation includes the Buffalo and Eric, tho Cleveland and Columbus and the @leveland and Toledo. The arrangement between Qhese roads was made by joint committees, mect- fag «i Cleviland some weeke since. It has now bee, -atiied by the stockholders of all the compa- Biles, with tho exception of the Buffalo and Brie, end they will act upon it at their annual feng ext Tuenday. An arrangement entered into with the ‘Laantic Gnd Great ' estern Railroad was also ratified. By this agre: nt the Cieveland and Toledo is to car- gy the through fi ight of the Atlantic and Great ‘Western, and to give that road, in return, an equal amount of through freight, going Eas:, the Atlan- tio and Great Western stipulating to maintain the vegular prices. At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Canton Company, hela yesterday, the following Officers were elected:—President, John W. Ran- @elph, of Baltimore ; Vice President, Charles A.
