FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. eee Faripay, June 12-6 P.M. The banks were this morning notified by the Sub-Treasurer that deposit certificates would be received by him—waiving the ten days’ notice—in payment of 5-20 bonds. This sensible arrange- ment had at once the effect of relieving the pres- sure for money, and will be still more directly felt in this connection hereafter. The banks and their customers hold among them nearly $100,000,000 of deposit certificates, all of which would be paid into the Sub-Treasury as money if the present stringency lasted. But in a day or two the regular disbursements of the office under the checks of disbursing officers will relieve the market, and the banks will be able to satisfy the demand for curren- cy to pay for 5-20 bonds without disturbing their de- posit certificates. The brokers report a much easier money market to-day than yesterday. Nearly all the large houses had money over at the close of bank hours, and no one who held good collateral found any difficulty in getting money at 7 per cent. The prospect is that to-morrow the supply at 7 will be fully equal to if not in excess of the de- Gold was very dull this morning. It sold at 141% a %, against 141% last evening; in the afternoon at 141% a 1415%. Exchange was 155 a ¥%, with a very limited inquiry. It is rumored that some heavy purchases of American securities have been lately made which have increased the supply of bills. Some Englishmen, who sold out their American stocks under the advice of the London journals eighteen months ago, appear to be taking them back at an advance of 30 to 40 per cent. The stock market was dull this morning; the course of prices was irregular. Governments were rather better, and there was more inquiry for bonds, with a light offering. On the general list Erie was 4 better, and Toledo rose 6 per cent; but Pacific Mail fell off 1, Harlem %, Reading %{, Southern old 14, Illinois 4%, Galena 1, Rock Island Y%, Atthe close of the session there was rather more inquiry for stocks, and prices generally im- proved. The improvement lasted throughout the one P. M. session; prices were generally 14 a % better than they had been at the morning board, When the afternoon session assembled members discovered, on comparing notes, that money was decidedly easier than it had been, and the conse- quence was an increased disposition to buy, under which prices rose % a % per cent all round. Erie was very firm indeed at an advance of % per cent on rumors of extraordinary receipts for June. The market continued firg till the close, and the indi- cations were rather in favor of better prices to- morrow. The matter is of great moment to holders of Missouri bonds, who reason, with some. show of plausibili- ty, that when slavery is abolished in Missouri the securities of that State will command as high a price aathose of any other free State. They are selling just now, with 15 per cent of back interest due, at 68, which would make the bonds worth 63, ex-interest.
