If the nows of the occupation of Puebla by the French ‘erveded confirmation, we have it through tho arrival here ‘yesterday of the British mail steamer Trent from Vera ‘Wruz, which brings the details of the surrender, confirm: ing im every particular the news I forwardea you ast week, with the exception, perhaps, of the numbor of {Prteoners, which | find reduced to twelve thousand men. "It is evident from statements coming from both sides that the surrender was necessitated through hunger solely, and Wy no means either to want of valoron the part of the @warrison or treachery on that of the generais, as many jallege. From what we know of Ortega, he is the last man An Mexico to stoop to accept a bribe, and I shall be the last ‘€0 believe that he was bought. Neither should any blame be attributed to Comonfors for having failed tothrow ‘provisions into the town. We have ample prcofs from French authority that he mado :epeated efforts to do so, ‘Aighting desperately on the 5th, 6th and 8th, but being un- fortuately repulsed each time, with heavy loss. Afer this defeat on the 8th he resigned his command, being replaced by Gen. La Garza, who did nothing but watch the road to the capital, upon which place he fell back on | Jearning the capitulation of Puebla. ‘ Some further details of this event may be interesting. ‘You already know that early on the morning of the 17th * Gen. In compliauce with this decision the 1 ‘following note was written by 4 GENERAL ORTEGA TO GENEIMT, FOREY.
