There was considerable surmise that the men composing ahe Sixth-could not be easily controlied ag regards mili- tary disipline, and that they would frequently «mutiny shee to undergo the rules belonging to the be aga soldier, Hut these surmises bave, proved false, as thero is scarcely a better drilled or mere orderly of men in the service than Wilson’s Zeuaves. Unusual interest was manifested in the case, and during the investigation the court room was crowded to suffocation almost. At the close of bank hours, however, there was a sensible relaxation in the market, and the indica- tions were that thing would move more smoothly to-morrew. The Sub-Treasury is disbursing pretty freely, and $19,000,000 stand to the credit of dis- bursing officers, the whole of which will be paid ont within a day or two. Under these circumstances the stringenay which has been so much complained of during the past two days cannot last. Rumors have been current of negotiations between the Sub-Treasurer and the banks with a view to the withdrawal of part of the temporary deposits. We have the best authority for stating that nothing of the kind is yet contemplated, thongh the Sub-Treasurer has agreed to waive the ten days’ notice, and to receive certificates of deposit in payment of checks from any bank which is short of currency. The banks, however, are well aware that such active money markets as we have had for the past two days always have the effect of bringing a good deal of money inte the street for temporary employment. The appearance of affairs this afternoon rather led to the idea that we have seen the worst of the flurry in money for the pre- sent. The ramor of the fall of Vicksburg, though no generally credited, affected the gold market this morning, and the price of coin fell to 14034, while bankers’ bills sold at 153% a %4—considerably lower, as usual, than gold. Later in the day there was a slight rally, and coin sold at 140%, and bills at 154%, 2%. At the close gold was 140% a 3%. There is little or no speculation in gold and bills, and the Mquiry for remittance is extremely light. There was quite a panicky feeling inthe market this morning, caused mainly by the tightness of the money market. Weak holders were freely slaughtered by their brokers, and the decline was accelerated by the offerings of parties who in such markets always want to sell everything short. At the morning board Pacific Mail fell off 2 per cent, New York Central 1%, Erie 2%{, Erie preferred 2%, Hudson River 4, Harlem 4, Reading 234, Michigan Central 124, Southern old 1%, Illinois Cen- tral 24, Pittsburg 134, guaranteed 3, Galena 134, Toledo 1, Rock Island 1 and Fort Wayne 1%4. The fall was heaviest on the New York shares. Bonds of all classes were lower; the land grants of the Mississippi and Missouri fell 4 per cent. Governments were steady. At the elose of the board there was a sharp rally, which lasted throughout the one P.M. call. Stocks rose from 1 to 1% per cent. Toledo jumped up suddenly from 106 to 112. The morning’s decline appeared to have pretty thoroughly cleared out the weak men, and to have begun to bring In new buyers. The old c~erators, who have been out of stocks for some time, took advantage of to-day’s fall to ef- fect some ptirchases, picking out the stocks which have fallen the most—Harlem, for instance, which has fallen thirty per cent within a few days. Such a fall as this is pretty sure, in any everit, to be followed by an upward reaction. In the after- noon the whole market was 44 a 1 per cent better, and there was a good deal of competition for the popular shares. The improved feeling lasted throughout the afternoon, and at the four P. M. call there was quite an inquiry for stocks at a further advance of %a 1 per cent—Erie 931{, Harlem 904, &c. The books closedsome time ago, to be opened, as was stated in the official advertise- ment, on the 18th of June. This afternoon the board was notified that the books would reopen to-morrow, the 11th, and parties who had bought stock “for the opening’ were expected to deliver it to-morrow. So extraordinary a mancuvre created the greatest indignation in the board, and @ committee wa once appointed to report en the subject. The decision will undoubtedly | that all contracts made ‘‘for the epesing” re run till the 18th. Such other action will be taken as may seem appropriate.
