| | ‘turned travellers, there-has been 8 concurrence of opinion on the subject which left little to explorers but the hardships and risks of the a the problem has beea in reality solved we sball not know for a certainty until ‘the report of the returned travellers has been published. Unless they have actually traced the great historical river to the spot whence it takes its rise, their speculations, after all, -only advance us some stages nearer the truth, ‘But, however this may be, there are some im- ‘portant features in their statements that cannot ‘fail to bring about a proximate determination of all further doubts on the subject. In the de- sacription which they give of the auriferous wealth of the regions through which they have -passed, they have furnished an impulse to dis- “covery and adventure whieh purely scientific umotives fail to supply. Geologists had long :sinee indulged in speculations on the mineral richness of the whole eastern side of the basin of the Nile ; but something more than scientific speculation was required to stir up the requisite spirit of enterprise. What was wanting was the -« hard facts,” and they are now furnished to us. Although, there‘ore, the discoveries of Captains Speke and Grant may not be conclusive as to ‘the main object of their expedition, they are likely to be attended with results of the great- seat importance otherwise. Of the character and extent of these some opinion may be formed from the history of California, which presents some -striking features of analogy with that of the region bordering on the White Nile. It . ds nearly a century since attention was first «called to the mineral wealth of California, by the reports of Spanish monks, and by an elaborate work published on the subject ‘in English. Humboldt also put forth the- -ories in regard to it which, considering the ‘source whence they emanated, ought to have ‘been sufficient to stimulate the spirit of ex- sploration. Nor were there wanting actual proofs -of the accuracy of his speculations to awaken. men’s cupidity. And yet, notwithstanding all this, no efforts were made to develop the mineral resources of the country. It required “the war with Mexico to fix public attention upon them, and to divert such a stream of emi- gration there as to render them productive. “The expedition of Captains Speke and Graut may do for equatorial Africa what the war with Mexico did for California. In the course of the next five years we may ‘witness an emigration there of hardy adven- turers which will rival the scenes wituessed in the infancy of the Golden State. In their re- ~ sults, as thus viewed, the recent discoveries are of infinitely greater importance to the world than the solution of a mere geogra- phical problem, interesting as it is. Tho Reign of Terror and the Watering Places. The watering place hotels are almost ready for business. Their patrons are only waiting for the warm weather to set in fairly, and have nearly completed their preparations for leaving the city during the summer months. The Sum- anit House, at Summit, New Jersey; Belmont Hall, Schooley’s Mountain, in the same con- ~ servative State; the Hotel St. Julien, Staten Island; the Bellevue House, Newport; the Half- way House, on the Catskill Mountains; the Lake Mohegan House and Pleasant House, at Mohegan Lake; the Mansion House, Long Branch; the Round Hill Hotel, Northampton, Massachusetts; the Pavilion House, Glen Cove; the La Tourette House, Bergen Point, and Union Hall, Saratoga Springs, announce their days and their varied attractions through our advertising columns. The long ist is before our fasbionables whence to choose. The choice mast be made soon; for not to go . to a watering place this summer is to relin- quish all claims to be considered as belunging to our best society. To reassure the doubtful and the wavering, qe are able to assert positively that the Reign of Terror in this country will not begin until 1866. We mean, of course, the Reign of Ter- tor to the abolitionists and the shoddy con- tractors, who are in Paradise just now, but qho will find American soil too hot for their feet before two more summers have passed. @ernando Wood, the Napoleon or the Stone- q@all Jackson of the democracy, raised the devil at the Cooper Institute peace meeting on Wednesday last; but his Satanic Majesty has aot yet acquired his full powers of mischief. The abolitionists and the shoddy aristocrats have two summers left for enjoyment. After that comes the deluge. This summer will be far more delightful thau that of 1864, how- ever; for next year the political excitement qill be at its height, and the shadows of coming events may cloud- the sunshine, After 1865, when a new * President is in office, no abolitionist or shoddy patriot will be safe in the country. Such des- potic stretches of power as the arrest and banishment of Vallandigham will be followed by fierce retaliations. All the Greeleys, Chee- vers, Wendell Phillipses and Lloyd Gai will either be hung or exiled. Parson Be has foreseen the storm and fed to Europe, sell- ing bis pictures and deserting his congregation. Greeley and Parke Godwin are also terribly frightened, and have issued a call for a meeting of editors at the Astor House next Monday to consider “the nature. extent and rightful limi- tations, if any,” of the freedom of the press. This cali we have been requested to sign; but we refuse. Weare already fully informed in regard to the nature, extent and limitations of ‘the freedom of the press, and are amply able ‘to take care of the Hxxatp and ourself. Let Greeiey, Godwin and other galled jades wince. Our withers are unwrung. The abolition politicians and shoddy fasb- fonables will undoubtedly make this season o most brilliant one, therefore, as it may be the fast in which they can participate for several years to come. The ‘politicians of all other parties and the remnauts of the old Kuicker- bocker and codfish aristocracies will certainly do their part. We hope tbat the watering place otel keepers realize the impending crisis and are resolved to be worthy of it. They will have great men and remarkable women to en- tertain this summer, and no questions asked in regard to the price, so that the accommodations, the cuisine and the wines be satisfactory. Money is now as plentiful as dirt, thanks to the printing presses of the Secretary of the ‘Treasury, and a little extra exertion on the part of the hotel keepers will meet with a tich reward. A great many excellent French and German cooks have just come over, and ahould Le employed at the watering places fmmediately. President” Liacoln and Mrs. Lincoln will donor one of the summer resorts with their presence after the President has the Fourth of July, in the identical Scotch cap and long military cloak in which ho fled from Pennsylvania to Washington,-two yoars 8go, and astonished the natives of the capital by an- ticipating “the Duke’s Motto,” and declar- ing—“I Am Here.” The President and his wife must be well howsed’and fed, Fernando Wood cannot perfect his peace projects by the seaside if the wines ‘and the dinners be bad. Chase and Seward will be unable to muster their hostile forces for the coming Presidentfal convention if their digestion be disturbed and their rest broken. Tho representatives of Tam- many Hall and the Albany Regeney can form no coalition without the aid of good liquors and endurable segars, The future welfare and con- duct of the nation—to say nothing of the com- fort of the ladies and the success of the season— depend, therefore, upon a thorough reform in the management of the watering place hotels. If sny accident shall happen, and the Reign of Terror be thereby precipitated, we shall hold these landlords solely and strictly responsible— and then may Heaven have mercy upon them; for we shall have none. News from the Other Side of the World— New Zealand and Its Prospects. With the valuable volume which it describes we have received the following letter:— TO THE EDITOR OF THK HERALD. COLONIAL Sxcrerany’s Orrice, AUCKLAND, Jan. 27, 1863. Dear Sin—I am directed te forward to you, with Boe Domett's compliments, 8 volume conta! the sti ties of Now Zesland for 1801, and inoludtog Lhe triennial census of the colony, hich was taken on the 16th of December in that year. I bave the honor to be, ‘Bir, your most obedient w. GISBORNE, Under Secretary. From the same source we have received simi- lar favors for a number of years past, as we have also from other colonies of Great Britain, and we take this opportunity to express to the various secretaries our thanks for their remem- brance and attention, New Zealand, hitherto known to the great mass of men by the romantic stories of South Sea travellers, or not known at all, must hence- forth be counted asa progressive place. Ex- clusive of the military, its population of Eu- ropean descent was in 1861 about one hun- dred thousand—which was an increase for ten years of seventy-five thousand, its population in 1851 having been but one-quarter what it was in 1861. Forty thousand of this increase be- longs tothe last three of the ten years. With- in these same three years two of the New Zea- land provinces—Taranaki and Otago—exhibit in little the vicissitudes dependent upon the various events of human history. In Otago rich gold fields have been found, and the population of that single province is now greater than was the whole population of New Zealand in 1861. It bas increased 317 per cent. Taranaki, on the other hand, has been ravaged by war, and there is a decrease in the three years of twenty-two per cent.’ Sixty-one per cent of the present population is male; so that New Zealand would be avery good country for that portion of our female population that is in search of “woman's sphere.” Sixty-one mento every thirty-nine women! Think of that,oh! Anna Dickinson, and all ye other petticoated come-outers. Better than that even for those lonely and disconsolate damsels who have dreamed of Some bright little isle of their own, In a blue summer ocean far off and alone. Here is the island. On it there are twenty-two thousand unmarried white men, and to catch them and tame them only four thousand un- married women. Sucha disproportion is sim- ply cruel. ‘Thete are nine hindred and ninety- seven widows. New’ Zealand accommodates its bundred thousand people in twenty-two thousand houses and three thousand tents. Twenty-two per cent of the population votes. Some electors vote in several districts, and in some dis- tricts the number of votes is greater than the number of males of a legal age. In every hundred of the population eleven per- sons are miners, seven follow agricultural pursuits, five are mechanics, three are engaged in “trade,” and five are laborers, while the spiritual welfare of the same hundred is looked after by less than halfa clergyman, their quar- rels settled by less than half a lawyer, their cramps and agues cured by less than half a physician, and they are taught to read and write by just a little less than a whole school- master. There are 22,270 horses, 193,150 horned cattle, 2,760,183 sheep, and the land under cultivation amonnts to 226,500 acres. No returns are made of the Maories or native population, though they are estimated at fifty- five thousand—fifty-three thousand of the num- ber being allotted to the northern island, which has a European population of forty-one thou- sand; so that the natives have the prepon- derance in one island and scarcely exist in the others, Officers and men of the military establishment number 5,836. The aggregate tonnage entered at the several ports, exclusive of coasters, was, in 1861, 197,- 986. Aggregate cleared outwards, in the same period, 205,350. The total value of imports in 1861 amounted to £2,493,811, while that of ex- ports in the same year was £1,370,247. The principal articles of export were gold, grain, gum, oil, potatoes, timber and wool, There were 194,324 ounces of gold exported in 1861. Though we do not in this colony so far see a greai or remarkable development of wealth, there is certainly a great progress, and we see another chapter in the tendency of the human race to extend its dominion to new worlds—a tendency thgt will eventually build up the whole group of the South Sea Islands into one immense empire, to rival if not to surpass the empires of the Old World. Perhaps that culti- vated New Zealander whom Shelly and Macau- lay both propbetically saw on the ruins of Lon- don bridge may not after all be such » mere creature of the fancy. The Case of the Chicago Times. Cincaco, June 5, 1863, In the case of the Chicago Timer vs. the military au- thoritics, the counsel asked for and obtained leave to withdrew the bill asking for an injunction, and the case was dismissed. La of a New Occa: teamer, Mr. Henry Steers launched the new and splendid steam- ship Retribution on Wednesday morning, at a quarter to eloven o'clock.
