FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuurspay, April 9—6 P. M. The imports are the Deaviest we have had since July last; the exports ‘ef specie the heaviest since last November. The exports of produce fall short of those of February and October last, but are in excess of those of the other months of the fiseal year. ‘The following are.the comparative tables of the trade of the port for the nine months which have dof the v1 gal year:— ‘ elapse pt rent figca Las oe | EB 1861. raoaes an eastae 8,885, 14,304,843 7,008, 18,147,917 8,523,741 Sans'o0e | 12000 Sian’eat 10,309,398 112,620,891 12,420 ga 15,739,576 18,719,866 18,930,895 ‘Total 9 mos.$181,916,843 104,122,751 136,300,201 ¥xronrs ov Dowmmno Propcca, 1861-62 1862-63. 9,552,789 14,060,487 9,652,301 13,046,389 9,877,809 14,734,993 12,904,350 19,476,967 14,109,763 34oe0. ge 13,611 444 14,805,112 12,063,477 14,329,308 10,078,101 17,780,586 8,985,176 16,137,689 100,875,310 139,421,891 ‘Sracm. Five per cent ie the standard rate for call loans, and six the exception. Debt <s-rtificates advanced 34 per cent to-day. Gold was not-s@ mercurial as yesterday, but still the fluctuations were sharp. It opened at 148%, fell to 14634, walllied to 14734, fell to 146, rallied to 147, sold late’m the day at 147, 148, 148% and 447% and closed at 5 P.M. at about 147%. The ‘Gold bill pevsed the Senate to-day, as was ex- pected, and mow goes to the House on the amend- @ents. ‘These amendments alter the whole sub- ‘@ance of the measure. Mr. Dean’s bill, as it @aceed the House, reaffismed the law of Congress, “@id not imerfere with loans on exchange, and per- ‘mitted -foans of par om gold. The bill which “passed ‘the Senate prohibits all loans what- sever on gold or exchange. It is doubt- ‘fal whether so sweeping’ a measure -as ‘his weuld do any good, and it is certain that it ‘would do incalculable mischief among -importers. All the protection which the national currency can fairly claim is granted by Mr. Dean's original bill, @cupled with the act of Congress. These measures Tender it impossible for small speculators to de- Preciate the national currency by buying and hoarding gold on speculation. Undes these mea- -wares to buy $10,000 of gold @ man must invest 94,700 of his own money, besides borrowing “$20,000 at bank. Surely this is protection enough. ‘MH, under these circumstances, the currency de- epreciates, it will be idle to impute the fact to Wall etreet speculation. The Senate amendments are veo hostile to the spirit of our commercial legisla- “tion, and so clearly calculated to drive business ‘from New York to Boston and Philadelphia, that there should be very little question of their rejec- “tion by the House. Exchange was very dull to-day, at about 162 a 16: Stocks were irregular this morning. Govern- ‘ments were rather lower. Quicksilver roxe 1 per cent, then fell off 1%; Pacific fell 224, and Central American Transit rose is New York Central fell %, Erie ',, preferred %, Hudson *4, Harlem 3, Harlem preferred 1, guaranteed 4. “At the close of the morning board the market was stronger. ‘There was an active inquiry for Southern old, Erie and Pittsburg, at an advance of %a 3, above the Price on the call. At the 1 P. M. all this advance ‘Was sustained, and the general market was firm. In the afternoon there was a general inquiry for New York Central, Erie, Southern old and Pitts- burg, and these stocks were higher and buoyant. Madson and Harlem were tame, and the latter was % per cent lower. The amount of business done ‘was very large. Atthe 4P.M. call the firmness continned, and there was a sharp rally in Pacitic and Harlem.
