Captain Youngblood, chief of General Gard- ‘mer'pataff, and five membors of the rebel signal corps ‘Were captured, Youngblood says that the rebels have ‘e force in reserve which can readily be thrown into Port Badeou or Vicksburg. At latest accounts Geveral Dud- ley’n brigade was encamped at the head of Prophet Island. General Grover's headquarters are on the cross row! lead tug from Taylor’s house to the Bayou Sara road. Welearn that the steamship Bio Bio, which arrived ‘4 New Orleans on the 22d inst. from New York and Mavana, was totally destroyed on the morning of the 24 by fire, together with the passengers’ baggage and her cargo, while lying at the wharf. The origin of tho fire is voknown. ‘We have a full avd detailed report of the movements of ‘the army under Major General Banks, with the intention @f supporting the operations of the fiect. The wilitary foreee approached to within two miles of the fortifica- ‘Mons of Port Hudson, but for reasons detailed by our cor- Teapondent did not come into action at all, General Banks, however, made a thorough reconnoissance of the ‘eountry and obtained much valuable information, with a ‘view to future operations. The whole army returned in Gafety to Baton Rouge without any other casualty than the wounding @f Colonc! For sone inouths past romore have been prevatent in New Orleans, among Unionists and vecresionints alike, #u intention to make « combiaed attack both by land and Dy water on the rebel stroughold of Port Hudson. PREPANATIONS YOR THR ATTACK. Th woun began to be evident that we were aot to be per- mitted Ww “ground on our beef bones” where we iay at anchor, off the Arsenal buildings and barracks. On the 12th the preparations made on board tne Richmond fur- nished outward and visible signs of a most uomistakable mature that we were soon to proceed to a place where broken heads and more nerious casualties were to be the order of the day. The two twelve-pounder howitvers which had been mounted on the poop deck and the forecastle respectively were hoisted up and placed in position in the fore aud maintops, and their places eupplied with two nine inch Dahigrens, taken from the port broadside, as they were not necessary in their former pogition, for the reason (hat, as our starboard side only wax to be present- ed t the formidable batteries at Port Hudson, that side alone would havo to be fought, In addition to the star- board broudride'of nine-inch gaps, the Richmend, in con- sequence of thie arrangement, gained, in addition to her thirty pounder rifled Parrott on the poop deck, and her eighty-pounder rifted Dahlgroo on her forecastie, a nine ined gun im lieu of a amal! brass howitzer on each deck ‘So much for offence. The defensive precautions taken were not less admirable. All along the etarboard side splinter vettings were placed inside the bulwarke. ‘This Retting was made of stout ropes, Tho design was to diminish the danger that is always to be apprehended from splinters, that oiten, in a naval engagement, do more damage w the men at the guns thao the cannon shot themselves. With regard to musket bullets, very Nittle danger was apprehended from their penetrating the balwarks, which consist of solid timber Sfteen inches in thickness. ‘The splinter netting was carried up so high that, wits the ald of the tarpaulins that usually cover tho hammocks, reaching up to the bottoms of the boats hang- ing to the davits, it would require animal equal in agility to monkeys to board the Richmond; for, be it remarked, the boats themselves towered above the nettings aud the | tarpaulins. The spaces between the several boate were also protectod by the saliors’ hammocks, lashed together and placed in 4 perpendicular position, in order to pro- tect the men working the guns from the enemy's mus- ketry, A similar arrangement war made on the poop deck and the topgailant forceastle, where there is nothing bat a siight oven rail, Ip addition to those significant preparations (or « bldvdy egnflict, ail brass work and everything merely orna. mental projecting above the deck, and liable to besbot away,to the injnry, perbaps, of the men at the guns, were removed. Only such things ae were absolutely ne- consary Were pormitted t remain. tn short, the ship was cleared for action. THR ADMIRAL VISUS THE RIC MONY.
