The subscription for the engraving of Mr. Church's “Cotopaxi’”’ is progressing fuely. From present appear- ances {t promises to reach a larger amount than that for ~The Heart of the Andes.” The question whothor some substitute could not be found for the tedions and expensive process by which ‘Steel and copper plate angravings are produced has for tho Inst A’teea or twenty yours occupied the attention of Scientific men. If sunlight will change salts of silver 80 48 to yield photugraphic pictures, it was reasonably ar- et that there wut be some substance which when in- Muenoed by light would either expand or contract, and thus produce a bas relief. The first practical solution of the probiem that bas fallon under our observation is that furnished by the new method of producing “Copper plate engravings, which is to be seen An operation at the office of the American Pho- tolype Company in Bleecker street. The manner in which {t 1a oflected mey be thus briefly described:—A vmatrix plate—being a glass plate covered with a sensi- Mve coring of about the thickness of a sheet of fine <Papor and perfectly transparout—is exposed to light under @ negative taken from a picture drawn for the purpose or @n engraving placed in an ordinary photographic printing frame. When removed tho matrix plate shows a fine Positive picture, which upon immersion in a fluid is con- vvorted into a bas relief, the lines of the picture forming the round and the spaces between them the relief. A reverse of this, in metal, depoeited in a galvanic battery, forma surface printing plate, which prints in an ordinary press with the sume facility ag any other stereotype plate. As @imple as the process appears when secn in operation, the Practical difliculties which had to be overcome to bring it to perfection have consumed a long time in pationt and per- Severing investigations and involved a large expenditure Of money. Tho resulta, however, cannot fail to amply ro- Munerate the company, as the economy of their system, compared with the other methods of producing eagra ings, is of so important a character as to insure it a pre- ference. ‘he photographic and printed reproductions of oil paintings, engravings, portraits, statuary, &c., effect- ed by their processes, are well worth inspection. Queen Victoria has commissioned Mr. W. P. Frith, R. A., to paint a picture of the royal marriage, The copy- right for engraving this record of a subject so interesting to the nation bas been secured at the price of five thou- sand guincas, This sum is the largest ever given for the copyright of any painting, exceeding by two thousand guineas the price paid to Sir Edwin Lanasecer for hig «Peace and War.” Mr. Gibson is reported to bo engaged upon a statue of Hebe. dir. Momro has executed @ statuo of a Naiad largor than life; this is to be cast in bronze and added to the Ingram Monument at Boston; also a Nymph, with @ vase, for a drinking fountain, commissioned by the late Lord Lansdowne; also a marble figure of Dante, for Lord Ashburton, Mr. Thorneycroft is working ona statue of the Prince Consort, to be erected at Wolverhampton. ‘The Emperor of the French has directed that portraits Of the three painters of tke Vernet family shall be depo- sited at Versailles. ‘Tho marbio statne of the late Admiral Lord Lyons, by Mr. Nobio, (or which a subscription was raised, has now Deen placed in the south aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Mr. Earle has just finished a soated statue of Queen Victoria in Sicilian marble, which is to be placed in the “People’s Park,’’ at Hull Theatrical. Matilda Horon produces her new play, “Edith,” at Niblo’s Garden this evening. Manager Wheatley, with his usual liberality, bas given the piece new scenery and appointments and a most powerful cast, including Mrs. George Jordan (first appearance hero), Miss Mary Wella and Messrs. Shewell, Lanorgan, Mordaunt, Burnett, Lamb and others. **Edith’’ has been played in New York ‘but four nights before, and is therefore still @ novelty. Tho production of the new comedy anndunced by Mr. ‘Wallack has been postponed until Easter week, in conse Quéhce of the preparation of new and elaborate scenery and appointments. Neither the name nor the authorship of the comedy has yet been divulged, Madame Rumor reports that all of the best artists of the company are in the cast. Tho town will welcome a new comedy most eagerly. We have not had one since “Bosom Friends.” Sam Fmery, the English comedian, and the son of the -colebrated Yorkshire Emery, is engaged at Barnum’s pious theatre, and appears this afternoon and evening in Serle's ew drama, “The Shadow on the Wall.” Mr. Emery brings a geod reputation from London, and the Play is well written, Dlapp, Stanley & Co.’s “Mirror of the Rebellion" is ‘now on oxbibition at Williamsburg, and will shortly make the tour of our Western cities. This “Mirror” was painted by dne artists, under the superintendence of Mi- nard Lewis, and ita mechanical and dioramic effects are excellent. The ‘Mirror’ depicts every event of the re- bellion from Sumter to Murfreesboro, and is well worth seeing. ‘The Richingses left town for Boston yesterday. They are engaged to go to California, and were allowed to name their own terms. ‘The first dramatized version of “Aurora Floyd’’ wae proauced at the Princess’, London, with every sign of success, The adapter is Mr. C, Cheltnam, a gentleman of literary taste and connections, who has appeared more than once or twice before as a writer for the stage, Another dramatization has recently been brought out with success at the Arch street, Philadelphia. Lord’ Byron’s tragedy of “Sardanapalus” will be pro- duced, with extraordinary splendor at the Princess’ theatre in Maye An unacted sketch, by the late Gilbert Abbot s Becket, called © London in 1934,"" is to be play ed at the Princces’ theatre. Sunvay, March 29, 1963, The foreign trade of the port was large again last week. Against this we ex- ported $3,522,562 of prodnce and merchandise and $1,050,156 of specie, in all $4,572,614~—thus leav- ing a subs jal balance in favor of the port. The export of United States securities has been checked by the fall in gold; but the accumulating evidences of increasing confidence in the govern- ment will induce further purchases— even at the present rates of exchange-—ws n an foreigners realize that we, in this country, have not lost faith in our cause. The export of specie was light last week. The predictions of the gold gambiers and febel sympathizers are thus confounded. They Prophesied that the Congressional restrictions upon gold gambling would drive gold out of the country. We see, however, that the export is lens than neual at this seasou. Some old fashioned financiers object to his accu- mulating so large a fund on call, Had these ca- villers studied the law of averages they would have learned the important principle that a call loan, made to a borrower who preserves his credit good, is as permanent as any funded stock. For every individual who withdraws his money there is sure to be found another who wants to lend a similar amount. Stocks fell from 5to10 percent at one time, but closed yesterday with @ tendency to re- covery. No particular reason can be assigned for the panic. Money has not been active, and does not promise to become so. The earnings of the roads are larger than ever, and the prospect of dividends better than it hasever been. Thus emboldened, the short sellers attacked the market with fresh vigor, and a general panic was the result. The above table shows the decline in prices. Yesterday there was a decided in crease of orders to buy, and the market left off with an upward tendency, especially in such shares as Erie old and Pittsburg. These two stocks, though much knocked about by the bulls and bears, represent properties which sooner or later bid fair to command & good place in public es- teem. Both are earning over 7 per cent dividend on their common stock, Both are earning more money relatively to their cost than either the Michigan Central, Rock Island, Galena, Toledo, Hudson River, Michigan Southern or IMinois Cen- tral. The Erie, on a cost of $40,000,000, is earning at the rate of $10,000,000.
