FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. / Sarvrpay, March 283—6 P. M. Money is in fair demand at 6 per cent on stocks. Mercantile paper of the highest grade is current at 6% a7 per cent, Gold was higher to-day. It sold as high at one time as 143%, and closed 148% bid. The exchange market was not sq strong; it was difficult in the morning to sell the best bills at 156; later in the day the rate was 156%. The stock market was better this morning. The recent decline appeared to have brought in new buyers. At the morning board Pacific Mail rose 2, New York Central 1, Erie ¥%, Hrie preferred 144, Hudson *;, Harlem %, Harlem preferred 134, Pittsburg %, guaranteed 2, Rock Island ¥, Tole- do 54. The bears continue to offer their options, and the short interest is probably as large as it was before the recent decline. Governments were steady; bonds rather inactive. At the one P.M. call the market was sluggish, and with afew excep- tions prices were lower, under thé offerings of ope- rators for a decline. In the afternoon the market was slightly better again. Erie and Pittsburg rose %each, aud the Harlems were very strong.
