BACRED MEMORIES FROM ANTIETAM. Phe Graves of Union and Rebel Soldiers— Mew Theixy Ashes May be Recovered— james and Regiments ef the Dead, dc. ‘The following is a lst of the names of alarge number @ brave and faithful Union soldiers who fell in battle at Antietam, and were buried on that memorable field. We are mdebied w Mr. James 8. King, of this city, for ‘this most useful and consoling record of the last reating places of so many of our honored dead. Nor are the Jewly gravee of our rebel kindred forgotten in the Net. They, wo, have their friends in their Southern land, and we shall be greatly pleased if the columns of ‘the Hexaip shall serve as the indicator to the tombs ip which their ashes now repose, Mr. King informe us that he went wo the battle field of Antietam in eearch of the remains of lieutenant of the United States army—a friend dear to him ia every way. ‘While pursuing his search, with the aid of proper guides, ‘who were thoroughly acquainted with the country, he was impressed with the klea that he might be useful to his countrymen, North and South, if he could prepare a et of the legible names of those who slept on that field, He accordingly resolutely set to work, and, after much aabor, trouble and expense, the result of hie generous labors appears below. Fach of these names represents a grave in which some Beloved form now moulders to its origiual dust. They @an, however, be recovered if proper steps be takeu at the proper time. Tho graves are ail marked; but how Jong these distinguishing indications may remain is ap other question, The ravages of cattle, the force of wind aad weather, and the irrepressible law of natura) decay, may change the present aspect of affairs at any day. ‘Therefore those who are interested in these sacred re- mains, and who would desire to transfer them to conse rated ground, must move in the matter without delay. Whe bodies are, for the most part, buried only about twelve iuches beneath the suriace of the earth, They are ot enclosed in cofting, but, like the remaine of the immor- ‘al Sir John Moore, have becn carefully wrapped up in their martial cloaks and blankets, and thus they sleep se- renely on their Geld of fone. Mr. King, in the course of his reeearches, opened several of t gravee, and to most of them he found the remaine compnot and ow A fair wtate of preservation, Many ef the wounded an! mutilated corpses had deen tenderly wrapped up ia their woollen and India rubber blankets, which so well auswered the use of ‘eoffing that no signs of putrefaction were to be seen names which wb give below, whether of friend or foe appear just as thoy were copied from the graves ther. selves. Wherever any apparent discrepancy or omis- sions oceur, they must be attributed not to the gentiemsa who supplies this valuable information, but to the igno- rance of those Who buried the dead or to the unavoidable ravages of time:— NEW YORK REGIMENTS.
