It opened at about 141, declined to 139, rallied to 14024, sold in the afternoon at 139, 1393{, 13914, and closed 13934 bid. At the close a large number of orders to buy were filled, and it looked: as though ‘the bottom” had been reached for the present. Exchange sold as low as 152 for first class bankers’ bills, and closed about 152 a 154. Some leading bankers are buying back at the present prices their own bills, which they sold to speculators and foreign mer- chants who wanted to hoard, a month or two since, at 185 a 195. Money is as easy as ever. On call the brokers get all the money they want at 5 a6 per cent. Certificates of indebtedness are steady. In first class mercantile paper there is little doing, and tates are unchanged. The paper of some dry goods jobbers and merchants who have been spe- culating in goods is offered at very high rates in- deed. Stocks were lower this morning than last even- ing, and prices were fully as much depressed as yesterday morning. Comparing the first board quotations with those of the close yesterday, we note a decline of % in Pacific, 44 in Central, 1 in Erie, % in Erie preferred, 4% in Hudson, % in Har- lem, 4 in Harlem preferred, 2 in guaranteed, 34 in Pittsburg, 1 in Illinois, 4 in Rock Island, % in Galena, % in Toledo. There was not much stock pressing on the market;"but the general tone was weak, and the bears took advantage of the fact to put out a large number of options. Governments were steady; bonds were dull. The volume of business done was very large indeed. At the one P.M. call the market was stronger, and there was a general rally of 4 a% per cent. At the second board there was a perfect stampede in stocks. It was rumored that a number of merchants who have lost money in merchandise in consequence of the fall in gold were selling out their stocks. The decline was further aggravated by free offerings by the bears. New York Central fell 2, Erie 134, Erie preferred 1, Hudson 1, Michigan Central 3, guaran- teed 4, Pittsburg 124, Rock Island 234, Galena 1, Harlem 1, Harlem preferred 2%, Toledo 1%. Up to the close the market was extremely panicky. At the four P. M. call prices were just sustained; but there was no recovery. The following were the closing quotations of the day:— US6's,’8l,reg — 2106 Eriepreferred 954 a 95% US 6'8,’81,cou. — a 10614 eee: on @ 97% 7.20, A & Oc — 2 106 - 3 & 37 Curre’y certs. 98 a iis Harlem am pret 2 a 81 Debt certif‘s.100 & 1! Peace would naturally lead to great changes in business and values; but those changes would not, as some suppose, be uniform or identical in the various branches of business. Peace would set free once more the great Southern staples, and hence would naturally cause a decline in cotton, turpentine, rice and tobacco. By caus- ing gold to fall it would bring down the price of imported goods, such as tea, sugar, coffee, hides, foreign hardware, kc. Domestic dry goods would follow cotton in the downward course. But there is no reason for supposing that peace would affect injuriously the price of the great Northern staples or the general internal trade of the North. On the contrary, the business of the country, which has received a tremendous impetus by the manufacture of paper money, would receive a new development on the conclusion of @ peace. Immigration from Europe would flow to the West at an unprecedented rate. Under the influence of the present highly protec- tive tariff factories would spring up in every vil- lage. Under the influence of $450,000,000 of paper money enterprises of every kind would be started, and all the boundless resources of the country would be developed. With peace would come the restoration of confidence, and with that would come capital from abroad to compete with our home capital for employment. The establishment of peace would again restore the nation’s ener- gies, now devoted to the prosecution of the war, to peaceful pursuits, and the results would be com- mensurate ‘with the increased supply of money which enterprise would be enabled to command. These various visions of the future are probably premature at present; and it must always be re- membered that peace would not cancel a single dollar of the $450,000,000 of paper money afloat. The receipts at the various agents’ offices to- day for conversion into 5-20 bonds amounted to $1,175,000; the receipts at the Sub-Treasury on deposit at 5 per cent to $670,000; total, $1,845,000. The business at the Sub-Treasury to-day was as follows:— 4 Total receipts. . —For costome. Payments Balance a 63,913.32 Nothing was decided ‘to-day at the meeting of the Michigan Southern directors on the subject ofthe dividend on the guaranteed, stock. The fact seems to have operated prejudicially on the price of the stock. The fact is, the directors have used the money which they had to pay up their debts to the Sinking Fund Commissioners, who have now in their possession $650,000 of the bonds of the company, having received about €600,000 from the directors within two years, The sinking fund is now full, and there seems no reason to doubt but the guaranteed stockholders will receive their ten per cent this year. $1 <2 54 4 100 00 NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 1863. 560 US 6's, 81, ae 1 4900 T 7.36 pe © 104 1000 deruct & Ap 108% 10000 US 6s, L yr cor 100 2700 do ow 97% 10000, do. pew 98 2000 Brookiyneity wl 120 1000 Hl cou bas m1 1000 Ubio 6's, 86... ‘a @ 2000 Mich 7 ‘s) war in ay 1000 Virginia 6's... 914 9835 98 9834 Bais Bt 887% 100 88% 450 Mich Central a 100 yar “penne 58). 1000 do + OK 3000 Mo's lotoHESW 80 4000 California 1a % 1000N Y Cen 7°s,'76 10344 1000 Hud Riv con bs 106 4000 Harlem RR2dm 103 6000 Mich So 2d m.. 104 8000 Mich So sg fund 112 600 55'5 10000 ALA T Hine bs 803g 100 815 53 MNCL E NW 38 A es 200 5836 5000 do... 0» 900 58 3000 Ch ew ‘int bs 600 2000 Lack’a & W bs. 115 3000 Tol & Wabletm 104 8000 Chi&Rock i bds 108 4000 Pitts,FeW&C2m 100 5000 Chis NW Ist 76 50000 American gold, 139 85000 di f do... . 20 shs N River Bank 47 Eank Commerce. 98 20 Bank N America, 102 20 Metropolitan Bk. 105 % Imp 8h & Trad Bank 2% 100 bees ee oe be $20 oa whi RR.. 85 Del & Pave Cal Co 128% 300 Cum Coal pref... 100 do..
