SPRING FASHIONS. _® ae Pening ming Day of the Season. dawned pleasntly Upon dur city, and the ‘day was true to the promise of the morning. It j# some ionables had such a favorable day for fhe labor they delight in, and they took advantage of it tothe uttermost. Nota moment was left unimproved. “Up and down Broadway they fluttered throughout the en- dire length of the day; in and out of this and that estab. Ushment, admiring, criticising or comparing, a8 the case amight be, wih ‘Notme gould pase through these show rooms yesterday “without feeling that economy is obsolete. There is no Provision made, no opportunity offered, for the exercise of that old fashioned virtue, and, from the eagerness evin-od \to possess the most expensive articles on exhibition, one 38 foreed to conclude that there is no necessity for prac- ‘ising it, The depression which settled down on the mil- ‘imery business like a cloud some time ago has passed away like a cloud, and the prospects of the coming season ‘re not only fair, but bright. The encouraging aspect of aflairs could be inferred at once from the preparations ‘wade by our first class modistes for the campaign on ~which they are about to enter. That is asign which there \is no mistaking and no counterfeiting. We were glad to mosice the evidence of present and the hopes of future Prosperity that were visible in each establishment we wisited. “She unanimity that characterized the “ openings” was “&% Pleasant feature of the day, and it contributed not a human ingeguity ‘bas been taxed so heavily in this re- Speak that the most and the best (hat can bejdone now i# to turn antiquarian, and try what the “years before the flood” would give us. The older the fashion, the bet- ter and the newer. This is no more than our men of science and letters are dsing every day, while they blow gl deal about the originality of their inventions aud features the dress is stil! the samo: the worn and very full, and the corsage is high to the throat. Good’ requires the last, and the hoop skirts necessitate the first. The ma- terials for the coming season will be, of course, silks of all kinds, alpacas, very popular and very pretty poplins, always destrable, and for the warm summer days foulards, organdies , grenadines, pine- | Apples, muslins, &c. The foulards are the very prettiest we have yet seen, both as regards design and quality, and we doubt not they will be universally worn. ‘They pos Sess two great recommen: ey ure cool and wash beautifully, What more could be said in favor of mus- lin’—and, with this advantage over muslin, it 18 not 60 easily mussed. Walking dresses made en suite of silk or alpaca are quiet aud ladyhke; but our New York ladies are too fond of bright aud varied colors for this styie to become popular. By the way, we must not forgot to mention that we will have an opportunity of studying ornithology ana éutomo logy on our dresses as well us botany, which heretolore was the only scieuce taught and illustraied so publicly; for perched upon the leaves aud hovering over the flowers 'e now to be seen specimens of animated nature—birds and insects of tropical beauty and brilliancy—odd and grotesque looking, certamly, pretty, perbaps, but not calculated in our opinion to please one in a hundred. For travelling dresses ‘Aberdeen winsey,” a material like linsey-woolsey, bids fair to throw into the shade ail cinerea; for it me P eperroue pe ‘imming is vor: ugely used, the principal being braid laid on in elaborate petiorns, somertanae straight round the skirts, sometimes piled up pyramidally, and isolated ‘ttle! to the holiday appearance that marked yesterday 1a a special manner. They are “somewhat emailer, swell over at the sides and less elo- ‘vated in front; the cape more pointed, the trimmings more “diffused, but,on the whole, leas like anew fashion than ‘the modification of an old’ one. The outside trimming, ‘which last season was concentrated on the top of. the hat, ‘0 uear the brim that it seemed part and parcel of tho “inside, bas retreated to tho crown, and there made a Stand—an advantageous one, we think—while the face ‘trimming has also retrograded, leaving tho {rout free to * Sink alittle nearer tho forehead, improving thereby the “appearance of both hat and wearer, Chip entocs largely “into the manufacture of summer bonnets, for which {ts ‘Tightoess and purity of color render it eminently suita \bie; but silk, lace, tulle, straw and crape are also used. Feathers. tlowers, ribbons und lace form the outside trim- by Him the same materials, minus the feathers, form ‘the face trimmings likewiso. No one color predominates: for, though white 1s more used in the body of the hat than any other coior, yet, generally speaking, it is so blended bre rere mas with positive colors that it loses its in- Aividualty. « y ia Shirred ilk for the uncertain spring months were on bition yesterday, looking as fresh and lovely ‘95 spring is favled to de, and forming a pleasant link be- ‘tween the heavy velvet bonnets worn universally by the spectators and the delicate creations designed for - Summer wear that predominated in every establishment. ‘Those shirred bonnets were made of ail colors—greem blue, gray and violet, and trimmy but not profusely, ‘with lace and flowers. The ruche again restored to favor, aod it forms such a pure frame for the face, and such an admirable basis for trimming, that we hope it will lopg remain in favor: for every substitute devised “for it from time to time only proves the superiority of “the genuine article, and makes a return to it more wel- come. The character of a bonnet is detefriined by the trim- ening. Excessive trimming can vulgarize the most grace- “SK shapes, and the commonest hat can be rendored ladylike by proper trimming. This trimming Yor the dncoming season hag hit the juste milieu: it 18 equally ‘free from profuse ration and affected simplicity, and in general com; of the very richest materials— «marabout feathers and heron’s plumes, costly lace and ba Feseet Soeee ; exhil yesterday was in every respect the “Dest and most attractive we have seen Torre long time, ‘The display was larger than usual, the number of visitors + gteatly exceeded those of last’scason, and th repenifested was more sustained and intense. The exhibition roems seemed to be fitted EB greater taste than ever, as if in anticipation of fashionable crowds that @ontinued to pour in in one unbroken stream from carly . bas ee dark. lhe first place we visited was that of A. M. Stewart, ‘by Fourth street,,which, in consequence of being lately \netmoved, had all the freshness of s new establishment. Dore we display was very fine and varied, and itwlicited juivocal admiration from the idly buay throng that Brith and out. We would willingly linger e little upon this hat, and describe it more fully; but it is one of those artistic creations which catch the eye and haunt the memory, and yet, from iis quiet elegance, leaves little ‘scope for | vGescription. A sleeve, wi @ lozenge opening, through which the undersleeve appears, is a pretty novelty, and when the design is carried out in tho waist, ‘and ‘an opening of the same shape on each side of the gored front gives to view the muslin or lace insertion ar- ranged underneath, the effect is very elegant-and stylish, THE SKIRT, The skirt -ts still made vory full and very’ long, hued Giga ; in Ge | varkey of atyle. Some- imes the trimming arranged to represent a doubie skirt, and sometimes it is laid on in hori- zontal limos; but in geveral it keeps close to the edge Of the skirt—that is if the trimming is formed of heavy goods, of velvet or the same material as the dress, laid on in platts or ruches: but if of braid it scorns all rules, ‘and is as devious and meandoring as the most eccentric fancy could desire. The amount of labor expended on the skirt of a fashionable dress now-a-days is almost ap- ling; indeed, the rage for ornamentation has reached ts height, and must, asa natural consequence, subside. Extremes meet; and we should not be surprised to see this era of exuberant ornamentation succeeded by one of Quaker-like simplicity. Apropos of changing fashions, it is nota little curious to see Mme. Demorest endeavoring to inaugurate a new fashion in courtship, anda very good one, too. All we have to hope, in case fashion succeeds in reguinting our foelings 08 woll as our dresses, is that our modistes may be, as in the present inst»nce, moralists too, MOURNING. ‘The mourning goods on exhibition this season are more than ususally clegant, the light summer fabrics especially so, The silk grenadines for s!i:ht mourning are of all shades, from deep violet to palo lavendar. Some are crors- barred with white, and others haye embroidered palm leaves scattered over them. Fortunately, custom docs Rot reserve these exquisite colors for mourning oxclusive- ly, 80 that ladies to whom they are becoming may wour them without any sad necessity compelling. We have as much varicty and more novelty in mouruing goods than - bar this seasou—crape, Eugenie paramiseers, Floren- ines, &c. Mourniug bats are essentially the same as the gayer colored ones—the sane shapes and the same arraige ment of trimmings.
