Tvespay, March 24—6 P. M. This has been another field day for the bears in geld. The price opened at 151, declined almost without a check to 146%, rallied to 14%, sold at 145% a 145%, 146 a 14636 im the afternoon, and @losed at 1463¢"bid. Exchange sold pretty freely 4m the morning at 165, declined to 161 a 160, and was almost unsaleable in the afternoon. No par- ticular cause has been assigned for the sudden de- ‘eline in gold, It is partly due to the revival of eonfidence in the government, whiclr is evidenced by the large subscriptions to the public loans; partly to the general expectation of success in the * Bouthwest, and partly to.the idea that the govern- ment is negotiating with European cupitalists for a loan. Rumor states that the steamer of to-morrow will take out the sauswer 4 of the Secretary to the various propositions which are said to have been made to him by the representatives of foreign capitalists. Mr. Wil- yiam H. Aspinwall and his son, Colonel Aspinwall, leave in the steamer of to-morrow, and the street * suspects them of being entrusted with powers by the Secretary. It is impossible to form any idea of the probable extent of the decline’in gold. To- day’s fall had the effect of checking transactions ‘ In produce, and rendered it impossible to execute foreign orders for United States securities. Si- 4, Multaneously with this decline there was another * heavy fell in cotton, which was accompanied by a similar fallin cotton goods; sothat altogether the day has been an eventful one among merchants. The check to the trade in produce will, of course, * pnly be temporary. Money continues very casy indeed. On call the brokers are supplied at 5 per cent; the best mer- tantile paper, which is very scarce, sells at 5 a 6; 4 debt certificates, old issue, are worth per, and the ( pewissue 98. The bank note companies are pro- ducing about $1,250,000 of paper money daily, all of which is immediately disbursed by the govern- ,, Ment in paying off the debt certificates, which are now rapidly maturing. The stock market opened strongly this morning, gud the amount of business done was large; but the decline in gold had an effect to check the up- ward tendency. Many operators seem to expect stocks to decline with gold, forgetting that stocks were generally higher than they are when gold was selling at 145, some sixty days since. At the morning board government sixes, issue of 1881, tose 1 por cent; the 7.30 notes %. One curious anomaly of the market just now is the fact that Onited States 6’s of 1863 are selling at 108, while the 5-20 bonds, which are really 6’s of 1867, are ‘for sale by all the sub-treasurers at par. The general list was irregular. Pacific declined 1 per vent, Erie +4, Erie preferred 34, Pittsburg 4, Ga- jena 34, while the Harlems were % better. The ‘frmness of these stocks, in the face of a generally jower market, is the more singular, as of all the active railway shares dealt in at the board the Harlems probably possess the least intrinsic valuc. A statement which has just been issued from the office of the company states that the debt af the Harlem Railroad Company at the present jime is $6,090,828, of which $365,000 is overdue end .$1,000,000 more becomes due in 1864. The get earnings last year—which was an extraor- Jinarily good one for all roads—were $473,401, which is about the interest, on $6,700,000. No one believes that the road can, tor ten years to come, pay anything on the preferred stock, which is, however, selling at 84.2 85 percent. At the close af the session the market was dull and rather lower. At the one P.M. session of the outside board there was little disposition to do business, and prices were generally a fraction off. At the second board the whole market was lower; Pacific declined 2 per cent, Erie 4, and other shqres in proportion. At the four P. M. call of the public board the market was better, and closed quite steady, the following being the last quotations: {rT.B0nAp&O.106% a 107 — HudgonRiver. 300% @ 101 Curre’y certe..98 a OSi¢ Hariem...... 40)g a 405/ Debt certs 's. 99% a 100 Harlem pref. 84 a 84 Dom’ notes. 145% a 1463g Mich Centra!.102% a 103 Amer’n gold fo" 14634 Mich South’n. 60% a 60% Missouris a — Mich Son gua.l06 @ 107 cw tale Ilinols Cen... 92 Quicksilver... 42 @ Clev & Pitts... So that, altogether, to-day, Mr. Chase has received a sum of $1,925,000 over and above the receipts from internal revenue. The business of the Sub- Treasury was as follows to-day:— Total receints. ” $1,410,336 37 —For customs, 204,060 00 Payimer hide L 741,628 67 Balance 1641S 629 44 The sigregate exports ‘of produce and merchan- dise (exclusive of specie) for the past week were 2,662.
