ABRIVAL OF THE mane, FOUR DAYS Len FRON NEW ORLEANS, Important Saveediidia on the Mississippi. Richardeun, H. Splain, Edward Taylor, R. 8. By this arrival we have received our ‘usual corres- pondence and files of exchanges. No demonstration against Port Hudson had taken place. Geveral Banks’ Order No. 12, being & translation of the proclamation of January 1, had disappointed those of the population who had hoped that he intended to return fugi- tiveslaves within the portion of Louisiana which is ox- ‘empt by the President, An editorial article which appeared in the eveping edition of the Zirue Delia of the 29th ult., which predicted abat General Banks wouid do just the opposite of what his Order No. 12 promised, was not suffered to appear in the Prue Delta of the following day, and the editor, Dr. Kennedy, was reprimanted. Thorpe, &e. An important arrest was made on Lake Pontchartrain on Saturday night, Captain John G. Hely, of Company C, Ninth Connecticut Volunteers, commands the post at Bickocks’ Landing. His force consists of two companieg. ‘Ow the night in question, the Captain, being on picket duty, got ibe wink of a party of men who were crossing the ake, with the intention of running the blockade, He Promptly had two boats manued, one of which he com manded in person; the other was in charge of his first Meutenant. About six miles from the shore a small speck ‘was discovered from the captain’s boat, which turned out to be the boat he was in pursuit of. The stranger had sails set and vans out; but, though Captain Hely’s boat had oars alone, he eared the other rapidly. ‘There must bave been some tall pulling among Unolo BSamuei’s children that night. On reaching hailing dis tance the suspicious boat was hailed two or three times; ‘Dut, aa no answer was ¢licited, a ritle was fired to teach Rer crew ood manners. The bullet, it was afterwards ascortained, took effect in the cap of one of the men be donging to the rebel buat, It had the effect intended; for the boat Rove to, and the loyal craft went alongside, when there was found on board some $800 worth of quinine; about the came valne in chloroform; thirteen ‘boxes, coL.taining each two dozen of cotton cards; three boxes of assorted medicines, together witha lot of mis. celiancous articles, just what the rebels mosi need. On one man $400 in money was found, But the best part of ‘the prize was a mail bag, containing seventy letters. The bag was thrown overb ard: but the action was scen by Captain Hely, aud, as the water was shallow, he bad no difiiculty in recovering it. The contente of the letters have wot been made known, of course; but they tend to impli cate not only persons in New Orleans. og ore ot the leading men of the North. theae Jetters came by the last Pv mg aaa are port dated ‘ Yaukeedom,” January 81. As a general rule, outside of this city, the people at large prefer government money, which they can readily recognize and about which they know everything, to any other kind of money. There are persons here, however, who believe that city bills will eventually be redeemed in coin, and, with the latter at 155 a 156, naturally see a profit on purchases of the former at 103. The coin in the banks, however, belongs to the bank deposit ors, and not to the banks themselves. If there were an attempt made to use it, the depsiters would have a right to claim their proportion of it, and would probably move by injunction. The money market is easy onongh at 6a 7 per cent. Established commission houses are supplied with all the money they want at 6 per cent, and the minor speculators experience no difficulty in borrowing at 7 on the ordinary speculative shares, The recent pinch in money has brought in a good deal from the rural districts and from New Eng- land. It opened at 156, sold down to 155% at the morning board, sold at 155 in the afternoon, and closed that bid, Speculators in gold are very apprehensive that something may be done in Congress or in the Legislature which may spot their market, Exchange was dull at 171% 9172. The demand was light; but on the other hand there are few bills pressing. The stock market was rather dull this morning, and, as a general rule, the prices of Saturday evening, though generally lower than the earliest quotations of this morning, were not sustained at the migening session of, the brokers’ board.
