Fiacsmir Wana, Port Rovar, Feb. 2, 1963. ‘SiR—I have to report that about four o'clock on the ping of the ist ultimo, during the obscurity of # ick haze, two iron-clad gunboats came out of Charles: by the main sbip channel, unperceivable by the squad and commenced a raid upon the blockading fleet. ‘Most of the latter were of the light class of purchased els, two of the heaviest men-of-war, the Powhatan the Canandaigua, being at this port coaling and re- puring. The Mercedita was the first vessel attacked. Her officers d crew bad been particularly watchful during the night Jook out for suspected vessels, and at three o'clock she had slipped her cable and overhauled a troop steamer run for the channel by mistake. She had returned to Ber anchorage, and Capt. Stellwagen had gone to his room fer a short time, leaving Lieutenant Commander Abbott @eck, when one of the iron-clads suddenly appeared. 1 approach was concealed by the haze and moisture the atmosphere. The vessel was immediately hail- and an order given to fire; but, the iron-clad being close (apd Jying low in the water, no guns could be brought o bear upon her. A heavy rifle shell was fired from the wemy, which, entering the starboard side of the lie ita, passed through her condenser and the steam drum of port boiler, and exploded against her port side, blowiug hole in its exit some four or five feet equare, killing the yunner, and by the escape of steam scalding a number of men, and rendering her motive power apparently Unable to use his guns, and being at the mercy of the y, who was alongside on his starboard quarter, all farther resistance was deemed hopeless by Captain Stell- ,and ho surrendered, The crew and officers were 0 th nothing was said of the ship, the Exetu Officer, Tieutenant Commander Abbott, having goue board the enemy’s gunboat and made the arrange at. ‘The iron clad, leaving the Mercedita to her fate—to or not—next engaged the Keystone State, Com der Leroy, who was attacked by the other. Their was gallantly returned; but,a shell exploding in the old of this vessel, she was set on fire. Commander Leroy kept off until the fire was got under, yen he stecred again for the trou-clad, having ordered p a full head of steam, determined to try to run down. The guns had been trained and depressed aplunging fire at the moment of collision, and the Aad acquired a speed of twelve knots, when a shell or from the enemy passed through both the steam chests, lly disabling her boilers and rendering her powerles:. Ten rifled shell struck the Keystone State, and two om the quarter deck; but most of them struck the |, being near and below the water line. In the meantime the Augusta, Commande? Parrott; tue City, Commander Frailey, and the Memphis, Act Lieutenant Watmough, kept up a fire upon the every, their attention from the Keystone State, which ge0n after taken in tow by the Memphis and drawa from the fire. ‘The Augusta and Quaker City were both struck io their ie ‘The Memphis was only struck in her rigging. ‘The Housatonic gave chase, and a shot from her strack pilot bouge of the iron-ciad, doing, it is thought, «ome , and carrying away one of her flags. . ‘The rebel vessels then passed to the northward, re the fire of onr ships, and took refage in tbe channel, behind the shoals. ‘The only casualties were on the Mercedita and the Key State. On the Keystone State they are very large. About ove of her crew were killed and wounded, and among the former is the medical efficer of the ship, Assistant Jacob H. Gotweld, who was scalded to death rendering surgical aid to one of the wounded me».
