Aan Farmar, Jan, 23—6 P. M, The money market was very active to-day. A large number of loans were called in, partly in consequence of apprebensions entertained by bankers with regard to the effect of the financial ineasure before Congress, and partly in conse- quence of the active Guctuations in the stock market. Atthe close of the day many loans had been paid off, and the bankers were flush. But it waamore difficult than ever for weak borrowers to obtain money on speculative seouritics. For day oF two, at ail evénts, the moré prudent bank- ing houses seem determined to keep themselves snng. Most of the loans to-day were at aix per cent on very large margina. Gold was quiet'this morning, but became quite active in the afternoon, and looked as though it was again going to move. It sold at L474, 14787, 148 and 148%, closing at 148) bid. Exchange waa tather dull; we heard of sales of bankers’ bills at 162%. There appeared to be araong deal- ers in foreign exchange and foreign bankers an indefinite apprehension of coming events which might cause the price of bills to fluctuate. We learn nothing which could justify such expecta- tions, but they exist. ‘The stock market was very much excited to-day, and in some securities there was almost a panic, Erie old, which sold yesterday morning at 8534, opened this morning at 81, fell to 76, then rallied, and closed late in the afternoon at 79% bid. Erie preferred sold as low as 103, then recovered, and closed 106 bid. A great deal of feeling is express- ed in the street at the conduct of the Erie ma- nagement, and especially that of a leading diree tor, who is charged ith having persuaded people to buy Erie by assuring them that 7 per cent would be paid on the preferred stock, and who» after selling out himself, is accused of having nsed hia influence to secure a dividend of 6 instead of 7 ‘It certainly seems ‘incredible that, after earning $8,400,000, the company should have only had five percent to divide; and the fact, mex plained, will doubtless operate to the disadvan: tage of ali Erie securities, as people will shriik from investing their means in stocka which are liable to be manipulated by speculators in the direction. It is known that a committee was appointed at the meeting yesterday to consider the subject of establishing a sinking fund to absorb the bonds; this would quench forever all hopes of a dividend on the common stock, At the morning board to-day the whole market was lower. Pacific fell 4 per cent, New York Cen- trall, Hudson %, Harlem 3, Harlem prefer- red 4, Michigan Central 34, Southern old 34, guaranteed 3, Pittsburg 2, Illinois 244, Toledo 44, Rock Island 234, Galena 24, Fort Wayne 1, Canton 4, Cumberlanl 14. Bonds were pretty firm, without much businesa. Governments were steady. The heaviest sellers were brokers who have been large buyers lately, and the presump- tion arises that they slaughtered m good deal of stock. At the public board, at one P. M., the morket, waa listless, and operators seemed para- lyzed. The heavy decline of the past day ér two is felt rather severely among small speculators who operate with inadequate margins; a good many of them may be cleaned out. At the second board, and at the four P. M. session of the public hoard, there was a surprising and violent rally in the market. Everything recovered from the de- preesion of the morning, and prices approximated to those which ruled yesterday morning. The scene of excitement at the public board at five P.M, was very striking. What necessity for any provision reapecting their being “exchanged?” As the pill ofiginuily stood these notes were to be convertible at all times into legs] tender. The change was probably made at the instance of the banks, who feared, justly enough, that the ies of $400,000,009 of interest-bearing notes, converti ble at all times into money at par and interest, would lead toa general withdrawal of deposits from the banks. People would make their deposit every afternoon in these Treasury notes for the sake of the interest. A telegram from Washington | thia afternoon rather seems to intimate that the tion, as pasaed, authorizes the conversion of the notes into legal tender at all times; but there is a | xood deal of doubt on the subject. If the notes “* | ore not convertible they will not sell above 90, and the Secretary, who cannot dispose of them below par, will not find many takera. | Debt certificates, on which 6 per cent in- terest is paid im gold, are selling pretty freely at 05; these new notes, with interest ‘‘not over 6 per cent,” and that’ interest paytble in paper, would be quite dear enough, in compar. rison, at 90. So far ae we can jndge, Congress is more likely to restore the perpetual convertibility clause than to adopt the measure as printed in thie moruing’s papers, and the result will probably be to euperadd to our other troubles @ bank crash worse than that of 1837. ‘Tho business of the &xb-Treasary to-day was as follows:— Reoeipts......6. “een —For custo! 000 00 ayant 400 208 27 10,830, 176 Ww ‘The exchanges st the Bank Glearing House this morning were $45,815,177 12, and the balances $2,05),379 99. ‘The Erie Railroad Company has declared s divi- dend of five per cent, free of government tax, on the preferred stock, payable on the 17th of Feb- ruary; the transfer books will be closed to that day, from the 24 of Febrnary; the Katgers Fire Insurance Company, a semi-annual dividend of five per cent, payable February 2; the Republic Ins rance Company, an interest dividend of three and abalf per cent on its eapital stock, payable on demand, and a ecrip dividend of six per cent, for which certificates will be isened February 10. This condition of affairs is made apparent course, io the discount operations of the banks. A great deal of the paper they get represents tranaactions of persons who are operating in the anticipation of epeedy speculative returns more than on any known regular trade (or the articles handied, There seems to be as yet no relaxation of the caution ex- ercised by bankers as to the security they require inthe paper which they admit to their portfolios; but, as is al- ways the case with cheap money and prosperous trade, ihe temptations to a demoralization of credit increase. ‘The great drain on the meant market through the pork packing interest {s materially reduced, and will soon be over, at least 80 far as the purchase of hogs is concerned, Currency {s, consequently, easier than It has been for rome weeke past, thongh yester: nd to-day in better request than it has been since tast Tuesday.
