FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Frrvar, Jan. 166 P. M. There is considerable activity in the money market, owing to the shifting of loans and the in- creased consumption of money arising out of the recent advance in prices, Bankers still expect 20 per cent margin in lending on stocks; but in the coarse of a few days depositors in bank will find that they can use money at 6 per cent safely, without exacting so large a margin, and their ex- ample will prove contagious. To-day the brokers borrowed all they wanted at 6 per cent. Debt certificates are selling in the neighborhood of 95 a 95}4. Some of these certificates mature in Febra- ary, and the Treasury Department will have to print additional paper to pay them off. Gold took @ downward turn thie morning. At ond time there was quite a panic in the market, sold down to 145. It fluctuated afterwards 146 end 146%, closing at 146% bid. Bx- d Grmly at 16144 a 162, but declined er month, or $1,160,000 for the year |, which gives about 7 per cent on the whole debt and capital stock. To-day, likewise, the active demand for money operated against the market; a difference of as much as 34 of one Per cent was made between sales ‘‘regulsr’’ and, for “cash.” Under these circumstances, which derived additional influence from the reports of the debates in Congress on the financial measure, the morning's decline in prices must be regarded assmall, At the morning board New York Cen. tral, Erie and Erie preferred werg at yes- terday’s prices; Hudson declined %, Harlem 34, Harlem preferred 34, Reading %, Michigan Central 24, Southern %, Galena 3, Rock Island 1, Fort Wayne 244, Pacific Mail 2. Bonds were gene” rilay lower. Government securities were all better. The sixes of 1881 (conpons) rose 2 pet cent, and 7.30 notes 1. The decline in govern- ments has brought in new buyers, whose “faith in the public credit is unshaken. At the 1 P. M. ses. sion of the public board the market, though not active, was firm, and prices in some instances were higher. Erie preferred rose 4, Rock Island % Southern old %, Galena % ‘Toledo, which ad. vanced to 90 at the morning board, on the rumor of the proposed consdlidation, was in request at 90%. Hudson advanced 1 per cent and wag wanted at the advance. At the second board (closed) the market was generally better, with the exception of governments, which: fell off about 1 per cent. Toledo rose 324 per cent, and Central, Erie preferred, Rock Island and Ga- jena were all in demand at an advance of 340% per cent over the prices at two P. M. At the four P. M. session of the public board the market became quite rampant, and stocks were all eagerly taken at an advance of %4a1 per cent from the afternoon quotations. In the course of another year it will rank with cotton, corn, provisions wheat and tobacco among our staple exports! There appears to be no limit to its production, and there is certainly none to the demand for it at home and abroad. We understand that a line of steamers are to ply next summer between New York and a British port solely for the purpose of conveying it to Europe.
