If there had been anly fighting, this eBijps would have come in for the first shure, as it now occupies the post of danger. Gen. Griffin's dyiston holds still the same position it held at the close of last evening. They lie in a ravine, whose front is close upon the enemy’s first line of cannon. Tt is about alla person’s life is worth to go to them or come from them. The moment a human form shows itself on the brow of the hill this side, a score of bul- Jets salutes him “from the rebel sbarpshooters on the opposite hill, Lieut. Rosa, of Gen. He says the bullets flew about his head with a proximity and liveliness anything but agrevable. He escaped by crawling away on bis hands and knees, Similar salutation was tendered to Lieutenant Case, also on General Gridin’s staff, He beat an aogive and, happily, secure retreat. The regiment have laim on their faces all day, with warms in readiness to spring to work when the order should be given. This situation of affairs has ren" dered it impossible to bury our dead lying on the fleld— the dead being mainly those of General Couch’s corps’ Sturgis’ division, which this division relieyea. THE WAR NEWS IN TOWN, Rumors Relative to General McClellan. The news from Burnside’s army was the absorbing topic of conversation yesterday, ag it-has been, in fact, since last Friday. Nothing but the telegrams were dis- cussed, and the morning and evening papers wore read over and over again with the intensest jaterest. The in- telligence in the morning issues was not very en- couraging, and cast a despondency on the community. ‘Yhe details, se far as facts are concerned, appeared meagre, and experience has taught the public that whenever there is the slightest indication of withholding news on the part of the government, something disastrous may be expected. Another sad proof of this was afforded yesteday afternoon, giving the people but too much cause to indalge their melancholy endencies. Shortly af ter noon tha news came over the wires that our troops had recrossed the river, and ‘the pontoons were up.’ The fact was posted on al! the news- paper bulletins, and, although it was in a measure om pected, the effect was nevertheless truly startling, occa- sioning a degree of chagrin not surpassed even by that which followed the news of the defeat in the first battle of Bull run, or Manassas, The subsequent scenes were repe- titions of what has been but too often witnessed in this city since the beginning of the rebellion. ‘The agony and suspense of people concerning their relatives m the army wore predominant, and it is useless to dwell on this Dain. | fal subject. Breakfasting with dimmed hopes, our people | sat around the evening meal dejected and almost subdued by despair. | ‘There were rumors at alate hour in the afternoon that | General Wo“ellan had again boen summoned to Washing. | ton, Sut no foundation for them could be discovered, is ee | THE aeBEL aD oN DUMFRIES. | they killed geveral rebels. The outrage will be speedily Tevenged, It is more aggravating because our own flag was violated. Licutenant Colonel Ducat, of General Rosecran’s staff, ont out to ascertain the facts concerning the viclation af the flag of truce, reports that the flag retired to the rebol camp andor the escogt ¢f the capturing party talciug our men. Some firing ocourred, aud a few aré reported doad and wounded. | A scout from Murfreesboro ou Saturday heard Jeff. i Davis and Bishop Polk speak on riday night. The foriti¢r declared that Tennessee must beheld at all hazards, Polk said ke oxpocted Grant to be defeated, and that Nashville would then be assailed. The informant says that the rebols will fight us between Tullanoma and Winchester. . There are not more than forty thousand robels between Muefreesboro and Nashville. Wheeler is at Lavergne. Buekner’s corps at Nolinsville and Triune. Bragg, Polk, Breckiwwidge, Cheatham and Hardee are around Mur- freesboro. Kirby Sinith is at Manchester. The rebel Forrest left here last Thursday night, with three regiments of mounted mon, well picked cavalry, to oroas the Cunrberland below Nashville, and cut our rail- way. The rebel Morgan married Mattio Road last night, and moves with his force of 6,000 to-morrow to attack the rafiroad at another point. The revel Morgan was promoted to major general yes- terday by Jeff. Davis. Tho latter, in apeoches, appoaled atrongly for the defence of Southern rights, asserting that Lincoln's proclamation wag reducing tbe whites and ne- grtocs to an equality, aud he was glad to know that Roze- crans was superseded by MoCook.
