At the second board stocks were very feverish, fluctuating up and down with rapidity, and the market closed heavy, All the indica- tions are in favor of the bears; but if they [ sell more stocks than they can conve- nient!y buy they may coraer the market, and put prices up on themselves. Some of our great bear operators systematically overdo the business, and keep shemselves out of fair profits through the desire to make a fortune all at once. At the first bourd Erie declined 4, Michigan Cen- tral +4, Southern old %, Galena 44, Rock Island %, New York Central 34. Pacific Mail‘improved 4, and Hudson, Harlem guaranteed, Toledo, &c.. were steady. Governments were firm, with the exception of 7.30 notes, which dectined 4 per cent. The bond market showed rather more strength. At the second board there was a genc- ral desire to sell stocks, and prices declined ia consequence. The tone of the market was fever ish and the tendency downward. At the close the following were the quotationa:— “eye 6’s,reg, 81.103 a10314 Reading. There were sales of Erie at 61% and 62, preferred at 88%, Michigan Central at 8744, Southern old at 3934, guaranteed at 2, &c., &c. Gold sold at 1323 and 34. We have heard that tirere was a call of stocks at the old board at the same time, but have no means of knowing that such was the case. The Board of Brokers adopted a resolution this morning to the effect that the Board should re- main open from nine to five o'clock P. M., in or- der that members might go there at any hour to execute their orders. The object of this was to prevent members frequenting the ow! board, We shallsee, ina day or two, how it will work. To-day it only seemed toincrease the attendarce at the outside room. The public at large have very little interest in the war of the rival boerds. Bat they do wish, and the brokers emselves Ought to wish, to see the present old joned monopoly somewhat improved and modernized. People want an open board, where aman who isa large holder of stock can go and see the process by which it is hammered down 2.a3 per cent ina day. , They.do not approve of the present hole-and-corner arrangement, by which a few score of brokers, meeting with closed doors in an out of the way chamber of their own, can fix values behind the back of the public. They do not believe that there is anything so especially sacred in stocks that dealings in them should be regulated differently trom dealings in flour or grain or other merchandise. The whole of the present system—the close corporation business, the arbitrary rules governing the fees of brokers, the plan of admission, by which deserving brokers are denied admittance while speculators are some times welcomed—is behind the age, and suscepti- ble of very considerable improvement, If the members of the Stock Exchange consult their own interest they’ will lose uo time in trying to adopt some change. The Sub-Treasurer concluded his negotiation this morning with the banks for the twelve million dollars required by Mr. Chase. Bidders for the 7.30 notes can check on the sums now advanced in payment of the awards to be made to them. The to-day amount thus far received on account of this negotiation is about $9,000,000. The business of the Sub-Treasury was as follows:— . ,t02) 439 67 teres fe ayes 15,066,333 $9 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $34,913,897 67, and the balances $2,071,021 O1.
