Si—6 P, My ‘The month closes on rather am uneasy feeling in the money market. Good borrowers, with first class securities, can borrow all the money they want at 5 per cent, or occasionally even less, But lenders are generally averse, in view of the uncertainties of the future, to lending to new men or on collaterals of the second grade. Moneyed men appear to be preparing their houses for the possibility of storms, Certificates of indebted- ness are 24 per cent better. They sympathize with other government issues. Exchange and gold were both lower to-day. The action of the stock board appears to have checked the speculation in gold very effectually or the present. At midday to-day it sold at 129%; at the third board it was quoted 129% a 130. Exchange dec!ined to 143 for bankers’ bills; good mercantile bil’s scld at 142. Speculators in exchange are lightening their load. The import of dry goods for the week amounts to $1,183,002— not a very large figure for the season. There was a revival of stock speculation to-day, and nearly every description was higher. The market was led by Erie old and governments. ‘The former opened at about 63, rose to 644 be- ‘tween the boards, and closed at the last at that id. Government sixes (the issue of 1881) sold up sell atten or fifteen per cent premium. If the War gogs on further issues of paper money will be retidered necessary, and it is evident that securi- ties safe beyond question, and paying a regular in- come of six per cent in gold, will not long remain of army 5 Tenort & With these facis in v: for sor thefuvorite Shares, tions. These effects are thus far fore- shadowed by an advance in governments and a decline in gold and fancy stocks. Some parties are selling their gold and fancy stocks on the be- lief that Mr. Seymour's election would introduce more democratic influence iuto the policy of the government; and that, the democratic party being hard money party, the policy of the Treasury Department would be reversed. Others, again, with more appearance of plausibility, argue that the triumph of the democratic party in the great States of the North would pave the way for some overtures for compromise or reconciliation. Some go so far as to predict that we should have peace in ninety days. A prospect of peace would, of course, cause gold to decline to the neighborhood of par, and all stocks which have advanced on the paper money theory would at once fall to. their natural price, as, after the peace, the publie reve- | Py aue from taxes and duties would be amply suffi- cient to defray the reduced expenditures of go- vernment. We give these speculations merely as the floating talk and theories of the day. Holders of the second mortgage bonds of the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Company are informed, by an advertisement in another column, that they can get par and interest for their bonds in bonds and preferred stock of a new company about to be formed by the owners of that road. ‘Those desiring to avail themselves of this offer will call upon N. A. Cowdrey, 29 William street. The trustees of the mortgages have not authorized any body to receivé coupons in their names, and bond- holders will not consult their own interest by deal- ing with any other party than the owners of the list, ee “Conducted Oy Engine “ge THE LARGE SERVANTS? een ae . ofa civil, capable servants. corner of, Lah st, and wor irish, American and Protestant JSDEPENDENT De DEMOORATIC NOMINATION.
