WINTER GARDEN, Miss Bateman essayed for the first tima on Monday evening the character of Lady Macbeth, and repeated it last night to overflowing houses. The circumstance of this being her first appearance in a character calculated to test the powers of our very greatest artists in the past, asin the present, lent to the occasion unusual in- terest. Whether it be that she gathered inspiration from the consciousness of the boldness of such an effort ina ¢ragedienne as yet so young, or that the crowded house caught up and reflected back her spirit, we know not, but she cortainly bas never yet appeared to so much advan- lage as in this character. If the enthusiasm of an audi- ence is to be taken as a criterion of success, Miss Bateman. won a complete and unqualified triumph. In the first act she wus especially excellent. The celebrated speeches were given with a tlerceness of intensity that completely carried away the house, and at its close she was called out amid a tumult of applause to receive the congratula- tions of the audience. The same may be said of the other Indeed, the character of Lady Macbeth, being made up of one strong passion, which overrides and sweeps down all others, and not requiring any deli- cacy of perception, er the portrayal of auy variety of shades of saul a eminently fits it lo Miss Butemen’s in- dividuality. The piece is announced for every evening this weeks ant wertare little doubs will carry her engage- ment to a brilliant close. NIBLO’S GARDEN. The opening perfermenucea of Mr. Forrest drew together ou Monday night one of those immense audiences with which this popular actor is on such occasions always favored. His Hamlet is not one of the characters which ig best suited to his broad, vigorous style of acting; but it presents many points of originali- ty interesting to those who have seen in it Charles Young, Macready and the younger Kean. The perform. ance was listened to throughout with that breathless attention which only a master piece, or that which popular preindice recognizes as such, can command. Mrs. Gindstone’s Ophel‘a, though not a forcible, was a very judicious and carefully studied impersonation. The rest Of the charaetere were very fairly cast, and the curtain feil amid well deserved applause. Last night the favorite comedian, Mr. Hackett, made his first appearance this seson, playing his great charac. ter of Jack Falstaff in Shakspere’ 's “Henry the Fourth.’ The house was most densely crowded, and Mr. Hackett's reception was most cordial. His iinpersonation of Sit John is too well known to require any extended notice. ‘The piece is capitaily played altogether, Mr. Wheatley, Shewell and Mrs. Gladstone sustaining their respec- tive parts reply eat spirit. Tho tardiness of the scene shifter, two or three times during the performance, was the only drawback. To-night Mr. Forrest will appear in ‘Richelieu,’ one of his best impersonations. WALLACK’S OLD THEATRE. A German opera company, under the direction of Carl Anschuitz, re-opened this once fashionable houge on Monday evening. From the close manner in which it was packed on this occasion it seemed as if the present enterprise bade fair to revive its popularity. The opera was ‘Martha,’ which, though pecullariy well suited for the initial perfor- manee of a German troupe, we did aot expect, from the fate of former attempts of tho same sort, to find very represented. We wore most agreeably disappointed. the opera being given not only with a of vocal effect, but of dramatic vital ty, which are not al- ways to be for im the Italian representations of it. The soprano (Frau Rotter), thongh possesing a voiwe of limited compass, knows how to make an agreeable use of it, and is, besides, an excellent actrees. The tenor, Herr Lotti, has a light, but very sweet orgaa, and sings correctly aud with feeling. 's Graft and Wein- tich are favorabiy known to our pubic. Fraa Zimmer- man took the part of Nancy in place of Madame Berkel, who was indisposed, and did very well. The choral and orchestral effects exhibited careful discipline and liberali: of expenditure: and, altogether, the epern was as well put upon the stage as could be expected (rom the modest beginnings of the enterprise. The success. both artis'i cal aud otherwise ith which the periormance was attended will, Wo truct, encourage the management to im- port a few more 's from Gorm Thereare evidently amongst our resident German population taste and liberality enough to justify such the venture, CREMORNE GARDENS. ‘The benefit of Seuorita Cubas on Monday evening at this ostablishment was satisfaciory in every respect. Ma. dame Strakosch and Mile, Carloua Patti sang some of their choicest pieces, and, a= they deve: ved, were loudly eocored. In the semi-pantomimic piece called “The French Spy ,"’ Cubas evinced the great versatility of her talent. The performance throughout was entirely sne- oesful. ‘The entertainment covciuded with some of the characteristic Castilian dances of ws and Ximenes, which were ia themselves sufficient to repay a visit to these Gardeus. The Rebel Congress in Favor of Invad- ing the North. Haraieaunra, Sept, 15, 1862. An informal debate took place on Friday last in the rebel Congress on the invasion of the North, arising from & resolution reported from the Committee on Military Afinirs, commuuicating despatches from General Lee relative to late victories claimed by the rebels, and re- turning the thanks of Congross and the country to him and his officers and mon, and favoring his attempt to rolleve oppressed Maryland and advance our (revel) standard inio the territory of the enemy. Mc. Lyons, of Virginia, moved to strike out the latter portion of tho resolution. Mr. Mills, of South Carvlina, made an earnest speech in favor of onward movements. Mr. Lyons asked whether the geutieman believed we could safely go into the heart of the North. Mr. Milis anewored promptly, “Yes.” Give Jackson one halfof our present army, and although there were 600,000 men ix the field, he would drive them ail before him, After w lengthy debate Mr, Lyons’ motion was re- jected—Yeas 29, nays 62, Mr. Smith, of Alabama, and others entered a protest aguinst tbe resolution ia its present form.
