We can report nothing new of the money mar- ket. Money is offered everywhere to the estab- lished houses at $ per cent, and many loans are effected at 3. First class paper sells at 4.a5 per cent; certificates of public indebtedness at 9944. Demand notes, in sympathy with gold, have risen to 107 a 14. The deposits at 4 per ceut at the Sub- Treasury to-day amounted to $300,000, We are witnessing one of the most curious of the many curjous turns which the gold and exchange markets have taken during the pasi six months, Gold advanced to-day to 116, closing at 1155% bid, and bankers’ bills were sold at 128, and held at 12844. No one seems to understand why gold and exchange should advance at this particular time. ‘The demand for export is light, the supply trom Colifornia liberal, and the bank reserve on the in- crease. The political and military news is not use people to hoard throngh want » On the contrary, the activity of re- cruiting and the inereased oficioney of military management encourage the belicf that the end of the rebellion cannot be far distant, and that within a year, in all probability, peace will be Stablished throughout the country. This is the general ex- ation and beliel im mercantile aud Guancial es, and it is theretore pretty safe to assume that the merchants are not hoarding, With regard to our foreign trade, we never exported as much as we are now sendivg out, and our imports are declining steadily, and must decline still further. itis generally understood that most of the large importing houses took the alarm when ex- change rose above 120, a month ve, and re- mitted ahead, so that the advance jn bills cannot weil have been catsed by them. Considering all the circumstances, this lastadvance in gold and bills is extremely singular, and must, in ail proba- bility, be ascribed to the operations of speculators, No more stocks are coming from Europe; ou the contrary, each steamer now brings orders for Erie shares and bonds, Iilinois Central, &c. The stock market continues to exhibit remarka* Dle activity and strength. Tt was geuerally ex- pected betore the board this morning that the rapid advance of the past week -would lead to heavy sales to-day, for the parpose of realizing profits. But, with one exeeption—Eriec prefer red—prices at the first board were either ly dy yesterday afternoon's figures or higher. An ac- tive inquiry for government sixea caused tiem lo advance 4% per cent, while the fives of IS7b and the 7.30 notes rose ‘4 each. State stocks and bonds were all in better demand, Missouri sixes rose 2 per cent, and Tennessees 14; there was an active inquiry for Erie bonds, and Northwestern assented bonds rose 144, and the second mortgages % percent. The Western stocks were very ac- tive. Michigan Central rose %, cuaranteed %, Ili- ng Centra! %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 44, Toledo 4%, and Nock Island 7%. There was no change in Central, Erie, Hedson, farlem, Reading or Galena. At the close of the session some large operators began to realize profits, and sup- plied the market very freely with stock, under the influence of which Central declined about Erie 14, and other leading shares in proportion. ‘The tenetion was generally expected, aud will afford speculators an opportanity of increasing their line at low figures. Soue persous seewed to suppose that General MeClellav's movemen which have been pretty generally understood in Wall street for a week past, had something to do with the degline, But, 40 far as we could gather public sentiment, any movemant whieh extricates the Army of the Potomac fromits prosent imac. tive position, and enables it to prosecute the cam- page ao glariously begun, will be regurded as ood news didoed. The pers who potthy Het OMe whee? wiv have a wa though they had heard good news.’ second board the market was steady, without muc activity, a) prices a fraction higher than those ruling between the boards. After the board a small bus'uess was dune in the ontside room, Erie was sold at 3744, and that was bid for more; Toledo at 6014, &e., &e. Next Wednesday has been tixed as the day for the commencement of the distri of “postal cwrency.” On that day Mr. Sub-Treasurer Cisco expects to have a moderate supply on hand, which he will probably pay over to applicants ia small sums, taking cave to prevent a monopoly by specu- Jators, A smart Wall street broker, with more enterprise than modesty, proposed to the Treasury nt to relieve it of the labor of distributing urreney, offering to take it all himself, and peddle it ont to the public at 74 premium.
