» 8 — FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIALs senecilinnaninoonenced Mowvay, June 16—6 P. M. Feday’s bank statement compares as follows with that meses last Monday:— Wk ena’a. Specie. Cirewlation. bey ry te Gussisast S1.248,892 8,889,093 125.60 14. 144,016,960 81,162.48 8,814,322 125,6:3,979 Bee 005,000 Teale 86 804 “4,171 ~ “changes from last week are insignificant, except in regard to loans, which have inereased. The increase, considering the difficulty of using money, reflects credit on the energy and shrewd- ness of the bank managers. It is not very easy to find employment for money just now. "The specie reserve is now about eleven millions higher than ‘sed to be considered a safe average. Sonie of the bankers will probably take advantage of the pre- sent excitement in gold to let the street have a few millions, which can be taken back hereafter ata difference of two or three per cent. Some of the brokers report an increased de- mand for money to-day. This arises mainly from the increase of speculation in stocks, whieh has the effect of increasing the circle of borrowers on all. So far as we can learn, the amount of money seeking employment is steadily on the increase ; all the leading lenders are ready to dispose of heir means at 4 per cent, and none of them will ilow over 3 per cent for temporary deposits. Green back “reasury notes were worth 3% to-day. ‘Bhe Sub-Treasury received less than $100, 000 on deposit at 4 per cent, and over $400,000 for con- version—making about $1,450,000 received for con- version since Friday morning. A very slight im- ment on this would put an end to all the idle tek about an inflation of paper money, @pd would yeenre for Mr. Chase a steady sale of enough 6.20 gonds to detray all the expenses of government. ‘Bhe bullion and exchange market continued all dey much excited. At the opening to-day the tending drawers asked 118 for billion London, then ‘Wey, then 118, then 1173{, then 118, and lastly MP, Gold epened at 10624, then fell to 106%, Men rose to 10634, and closed, at the Brokers’ Beard, 106% bid. Both drawers and exchange ‘eokers seem crazy. It is evident, however, that tHe attack will be of brief duration. “There is no weal basis for the rise in gold or bills, and neither ean be lasting. The advance in gold will happily Dave the effect of enabling many parties who have ‘been buyers and holders to sell out without loss. ‘Banks and bankers in the country should not lose the present opportunity, but should order their etd sold at once. On lst proximo—i. ¢., in two sweeks—between $7,000,000. and $8,000,000 of geld will be disbursed in this city for interest on the federal and State debte. If any one sap- peses that the owners of this large sum will hoard M at a cost of % per cent s month, and ‘without any “prospect of dividends on it, when people are making five per cent in a month, and sometimes five per cent in a week, bythe purchase ‘ef bonds and stocks, he is very much mistaken. ‘We have reason to believe that the holders of large amounts of government and State securities are alveady selling, for future delivery, the gold they ‘wi receive on the ist of July. ering Spt by ‘Me bulls in gold that we may lose a large amount @ gold by export. We can lose no more gold to Borope than will cover the difference between our shipments of produce and our receipts of goods frem thence; and, as was shown by the tables in ‘is morning’s Henato, there is already a balance ef ever $6,000,000 in our favor on the trade of the fiseal year, and we are increasing this balance atthe wate of over a million monthly. We have still in Rand a balance of about $20,000,000 of the gold we took from Europe last year, to say nothing of ‘the receipts from California. The demand for eeia for export will not, probably, this year, do ‘more than restore to Europe the coin we took frem thence last year; and meanwhile our reserve fs being steadily increased by the supply from @altfornia, It is surely idle to expect, under such eireumstances, to maintain the premium on gold. Exchange dealers have been excited for the past @sy or two by stories ,about stocks coming home for sale. The fact is that some of our smart Bankers have been making a good deal of money Dy trading on the ignorance and fears of European holders of American securities. Bat the game maust be nearly played out. They are beginning te understand, on the other side, that this eountry is stronger and richer, and better @ble to pay its debts, than it ever was, and they are not as willing ae they were when ‘Dr. Russell was predicting our financial ruin to part with their American investwents. Itistrue ‘that stocks are relatively hicher here than abroad; ‘bat, with exchange at 1174, the diiference must be very large indeed, even to cover expenses. Stocks opened with a heavy feeling this moru- fing, and a decline was generally anticipated. Before ‘the board Central sold down to 95. But the market ‘was irrepressible, and before the morning session had expired Central was up acain to 9634. Other @escriptions, with the exception of Galena, which ‘was { better, were lower than on Saturday after- ween. Government sixes sold at a decline of 4, Brie fell off %, Erie preferred 1, Hudson 1, Har- Jem preferred 2, Michigan Central 1%, Southern ola %, guaranteed %, Miinois Central /, Toledo % &c., &c. Between the boards the market was @tmeng, but transactions were limited. At the gecond board a feir amount of business was done. ‘Brie and Central were 4 higher than atthe morn- mg board.
