(avasion Justifiabl (From the Opinion Ni allonle(eringe Nepoeon'sorgat) ‘April Ip England public attention is exclusively directed to ‘the transformation of the navy. The government and the nation desire, atany price, to misidtein thels warts time supremacy; but they will endeavor in vain, It will ‘be no longer for them to secure their coast against tnvasion. Asquadron ot iron-plated sie, 8 armed with cannon suflicieatiy powerful to sweep the shore to a distance of several kilometres, will always permit a Tanding to be effected, particularly if the hostile Power ‘be near enough to be able to choose its time, and if the atmospheric conditions leave a smooth seafor thirty or forty hours. ‘This is the principal cause of our thbor’s anxiety. They know that the part of ir territory situated opposite France presents in ® safe landing place, that it is of eas; access, and they araad iikewise qehat a squadron whi would rene ip Canal, has ten chances to oneof not mooting a passage capable of stopping it. We trust that the terrible struggle to which we allude will ‘not take place between France and England. The late action between the Monitor and the Merrimac, and its conse- =. were naturally the subject of conversation. unanimous opinion expressed was, that in future it will be more expedient to build light irigates, spoeuily constructed at @ moderate exponse, than yeasels of largo ~ dimensions, which require years of labor and millions of francs to complete them. It was further declared that ‘an essential quality in these floating batteries, not to be Overlooked, is their power of navigating in’ a tempes- 4uous sea. The conclusion arrived at was that a ship-of- sph of photpe orl force with the Monitor might be constructed the French naval arsenals in a month, and that per @ year France might supply herself with an iron fleet equal to that of any Power in Europe. Conrady, a policeman of the Ninth precinct, Brooklyn, was placed on trial on an in- dictment for manslaughter, in. killing Paul O'Neill, a prisoner, who attempted to escape from his custody. Tho circumstances of the case are these:—The police- man heard a noise in the house of O'Neill, which is situ- ated in Spencer street, near Myrtle avenue, about two o'clock on the morning of the 18th of March last, and went in to see what was the matter, when he found that O’Noill had beaten his wife, and that #he had taken re- fuge under the bed.
