Parties. who have spare funds can still use them in Wall street, if not at 7 até percent. Paper is scarce; first class names sell at5%4a7. We learn that the government disburs- ing officers will issue to creditors the certificates of indebtedness authorized by the recent act of Congress, so as to save confusion at the Treasury Department. Exchange is firm but inactive. Bankers’ rates are 11254 a 113 for sterling, and 5.00 45.05 for francs. There are very few bills in market; but the demand is light. Most of the purchases to- day were on account of Havara houses. Gold im- proved a shade this morning. There were large sales at 102%, and 10234 was given, buyer sixty. ‘The California stcamer arrived to-day with $679,075 in gold. ‘ Stocks were suet firm this mormng. in Erie and Central one or two other descriptions there was a slight advance. The Michigan shares were all 34 a 4% per cent better, on the strength of the large earnings of both roads. It is‘supposed that the Michigan Central wili declare another dividend on Ist of June. Nothing is known of the prospects of dividends on the Michigan guarantecd; but the earnings of the road are so far in excess of interest and expenses that it cannot bé long be- fore dividends are resumed. Galena rose 24, and Mlinois Central 34, at the morning board. On the other hand, Panama fell off 1 per cent, Reading 34, and Pittsburg 24. Governments were not quite so firm as yesterday. The market is one of ex- pectancy, the general feeling among brokers and speculators being that the success of our arms aud the ease in monctary circles which will follow the issue of Treasury notes by government are cal- culated to render the bull more profitable than the bear side. Between the boards very little business was transacted. At the second board there was an improved demand for governments, and likewise for Michigan Central, which is very scarce, and for which some of the commission houses scem to have orders, ‘Other descriptions showed no material change from the morning price. Speculators were full of rumors this afternoon; but they did not seem to rest upon any reliable basis, and produced no effect upon the market. Stocks closed firm, the following being the last authorized qnotatio: United States 6’s, registered, 1881, 9274 a 93; do. 6’ oumpos, 1881, 9294 a 94; do. 5's, coupon, 1874, 8524 ; Virginia 6's, eon; Tennessee 6's, 60 a ws Missouri 6's, 52% a %; Pacific Mail, 93% a 3, New York Central, 8344 a 5(; Erie, 3494 0 3; do, preferred, 5594 a 59; Hudson River, 37 a %%; Harlem, 12% a 14; do. preferred, 2924 a 30; ied ing, 40% a 41; Michigan Central, 5434 a i Michi- gan Southern and Northern Indiana, 23% a 2414; do. guaranteed, 477% a 4814; Panama, 116% a 11734; Tilinois Central, 6434 a 64%{; Galena and Chicago, 67% a 68; Cleveland and Toledo, 4534 9 54; Chica- go and Rock Island, 5644 @ 44; Chicago, Burling- ton and Quincy, 6334 #65; Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, 20a 34; Cleveland, Columbus and Cin- cinnati, 10934 a 110; New York Central 7's of 1876, 103% a 104; Illinois Central bonds (7's), 93 a 9534; gold, 102 a 10214. ‘ Speculation appears to be reviving in Erie secu- rities. At this morning's board 6924, buyer sixty, was given for the preferred stock, and 84 for the fourth mortgage. The common stock also ad- vanced 14 a 34 jer cent. Eric securities have not advanced during the past sixty days, while New York Central stock has risen nearly seven per cent, and other railway shares, with less claim to the notice of speculators than Erie, have advanced still more. The earnings of the Erie are at present at the enormous rate of $8,000,000 per annum. The property has passed out of the hands of the receiver back into the possession of its stockhold- ers. Tho process of liquidation throngh which it has passed; the economies which the managers have been compelled to practise; the unanimity with which the creditors have accepted the plan of reconstruction; the successful com- pletion of the Long Dock extension, which is destinei to produce such important ehanges in the Jusiness of the company, should, in the ordinary course of affairs, especially when con- curring with the recent remarkable increase in the earnings of the road, have led to a general appre- ciation of its recnritics. This result has been pre- vented by ‘he large sales of Evie securities for the account of forciin holders. It is understood that the Trent affair al no led to sales in our market for English account of some 20,000 common shares, besides preferred shares and bonds. The eupply from abroad has been so large that the increascd demand growing out of the improved condition of the property has been fully met, and no advance in prices has taken-place. It is now taken for granted by houses which are known to act for foreign investors that the improved prospects of the conntry,,and especially the comparative certainty that peace will be main- tained with England, will operate not only to check farther sales of Erie securities for foreign account, but likewise to tempt many parties who recently sold ont toreplace their securities. If j the market were relieved from the supply of | fopeinn stage whigh bag been pouring into it, for | for Sale a4, Ohip rome two or Uuee months, it is quite doubiful whether the domertia demand.growing out of a genera appreciation of the improvement tisib 4° going on im the property conld be met without causing an advance in the price of the stock. If the domestic demand is to be swelled by foreign orders, it is quite certain that it will appreciate, very rapidly. Erie has always been, in ‘sh times, a favorite stock with speculators ere, and of all our railway stocks it isthe one in which foreigners generally like best to Invest.
