Hore we are at Bowling Green, Our Aivision, under the direction of the Commanding General, pol ual ysuuched like a thunderbolt upon the place, and has secured all the fruits of a great victory by the vigor and rapidity of the enterprise, without the sacrifice of a single life. The su of the movement took every one by surprise, all being prepared for and expecting » ‘delay of days, and perhaps weeks, at Green river, before Advance was made. Of course the surprise was most ‘unexpected by the enemy, who cofild never believe that ® march of forty miles over roads obstructed by trees, and ploughed up toa great depth where there was any chance of making an impassable bog, could be accom, Plished by an entire army, with its full complement of artillery and with its long train of wagons, in two short February days. The order for march was received at six P.M.; at seven the General had his brigade com. mandors, colonels and quartermasters at his headquar- ters, whon the most rigid scrutiny was made into the wuts of the column, and instant provision made to sup- ply them. At eight o’clock all retired to their several ‘headquarters, to push forward the necessary movements, under instructiops to be ready for the start by six the next morning, At ten minutes past six the march was commenced, all being ‘in readiness, ‘To understand the immense labor necessary to offect this, imagine the moving of an entire town of 12,000 people,2'1 being effected within the short space of ten hours. But it was done, and done 60 completely that from the start not asingle hindrance occurred to break the line of march. The General had infused his own indomitable ‘spirit into all his army, from the highest officer to every private, and all were eager to perform an amount of labor that would have seemed absolutely impracticable under avy other than the grand and exciting tmpulse of the ‘hour. ‘The signal gun, at six o’clock, put in motion the great mass of men, with such boautiful-order and regularity as to make one of the most imposing spectacles in the world, the brigade under Colonel Furchin leading the ‘column, followed by the Seventeenth and the Eighth, each in its own proper position in line, the splendid band of the regiments playing tho -‘Star Spangled Banner” and other national airs. The General was hailed with ‘the most enthusiastic shouts as he passed along the lines, ‘che men being in the highest spirits and feeling that ander such a leader there would be such work given them to do ag would be worth performing. Tle morning was clear and still, and when the suo arose and lighted upthe ‘world it seemed as if he gave a promise of good things to come to all who were engaged in this glorious enterprise. The first day's march accomplished eighteen miles— an unparalleled feat—when over 12,000 men, with heavy artillery, baggage trains, carrying rations and forage for so large a force, came to the halt without s single accident or unusual delay. Fifteon or sixteen miles of this day's march wore over a dirt road, which the enemy had plowed up in places and obstructed with fatten trees. These were removed by the pioneers, and the column pagsed em without halts. The fatigue was cheerfully borne by all,for we were in the advance. ‘That magic word now stirred the pulses with double iife ‘and motion. The next day's march was over a turnpike. ‘The start was made at half-past seven o'clock in the morning, and by half-past eleven the cavalry (Fourth Ohio), with Lcomis’ battery of Parrott guns, swept up to the river's bank. The battery was instantly placed in ponition, and the first opportunity given to show what great improvement in practice had been effected by the scientific soldiership of the General, who had devoted © good deal of time to the arm. The range eacertained, a shot was thrown by Captain Loomis through one of five locomotives whic . were fixed up and ready to move an immense amount of provisions. This, ‘et a range of one mile and three-quarters, may be con- sitered one of the most remarkable hits ever made. It was ‘a very palpable bit; for its effect upon General Hindman, who was in the depot, was to scatter him and his men in an instant—that pious hero swearing by his Maker that it wastoo hot for them, and they must run for their lives, The shelling of the depot saved us five locomotires and forced the rebels to burn up and destroy the storos they could not remove. They bad blown up and destroyed the bridges over the river, te prevent any purauit, and thoy left in doubie quick haste to save them- selves. Not an instant was lost in preparing for the pur- uit, and regiment after regiment came up in double quick to take their part in the action which they sup- posed was about to take place. ‘The advance guard, composed of Kennett’s cavalry, made the first passage of the river by @ flatboat, about three miles from the ruins of the bridge—the approach to which was down a frozen, precipitous bank of rocks, in steps which it was necessary to fill with bags of bran to give a footing to the horses. By this means the regi mont passed over by balt-past three o'clock in the morn ing, the rebel cavalry abandoning the town at four o'clock, 60 that our troops were on the other side of the river be: fore they left, which they did in such hot haste that they made eighteen miles before a halt, Tt was on the next day that the footbridge was built out of the wreck of the old, upon which regiments crossed, carrying their bag gage on their backs, which they were obliged to bear up a steep acclivity of rocks, requiring great labor and caro to keep their footing. By this bold movement instant poesession of the town wae secured, By great Inbor a (erry has been estad lis! pen which the entire divisica will be passed over to-m rrow, with its entire ecmple: ment of artillery ord {ts burpage trains, When you con. ider the almest jon of the roads, by ¥Feason of the deep « ch you have had se experience in your unre 2k (his State), vou nm: “onceivo the yest toi! and care that were necorsa: bestowed ip constructing the roads to and from this fer Of sufficient solidity to bear the enormous traius iat wi pass over them. It wasentirely ceperted by the rebels, and left to our eccupation, the only damage done by them being the destraction of 16 vorai warehouses, Olled with the stores they were unable to remove. ‘Thus was accomplished the conquest of Bowling Green, which gives to us the Gibraltar of Kentueky, and breaks im on that line of defence which the rebels have pro” nounced impreguable. It must be evident to every rev fective observer that this is the reward of @ bold, oner- getlc movement, which has noparallel in cur present war, ‘and whose results are so (mportant as almost to decide in advance the settlement of the great question between the loyal and tho disobedient. AS we reached the depot everything was in commotion, All civilians were excluded from the return trains to give Place to sick soldiers and women and children, who were ilecing from their homes for places of greater safety. What heroism and patriotism are here displayed by these, the most de- fenceless and exposed. It is not thought probable that the enemy will make an immediate advance along the Bowling Green route, unless they defeat us at Fort Donelson. In that event, an advance movement along the whole line of the enemy will be made, and terrible fighting will engue. Before this reaches you, therefore, you will doubtless receive by telegraph stirring news (rom th's quarter. THE FIRE.
