The steamer Canada, from Boston to-day, took out $20,000 and 8,000 sovereigns in specie. There 48 no alteration in call loans or paper. The specu- lative movement in gold continues. It rose to 102% at the second board, with sales of upwardy of $150,000. It continued to advance after the ad- journment, and some private transactions were made late in the day at as high as 103%. The foreign exchanges remain firm, the leading bankers refusing to sell sterling under 11224; but nothing bas been done as yet for Saturday’s steamer. The Committee of Ways and Means reported to the House of Representatives this morning a bill suthorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to issue one hundred and fifty millions of demand notes (the fifty millions already issued being included in this amount), which are to be made a legal tender for public and private debts, and also empowering him to issue six per cent bonds, redeemable in twenty years, to the extent of five hundred millions of dollars. The provisions of the bill were ap- proved of by Mr. Chase this morning, and it was made the special order in the House for Tuesday next. The stock market opened with a downward ten- dency this morning, particularly in governments, which fell to 89 for the registered, and to 90 for the coupon sixes of 1861. As the call proceeded, however, new buyers made their appearance, un- der the influence of whose purchases prices soon Tallied, most of the leading railroad shares ad- wancing % a % per cent over the lowest points touched yesterday afternoon. At the after- moon session, when it was known that the Committee of Ways and Means had reported in favor of an issue of demand Treasury notes, the upward movement be- came more decided, and a further advance of % a % per.cent over the morning’s prices took place, the market closing firm. Railroad bonds continue to improve. Galena and Chicago firsts rose to 103 to-day, Michigan Central firsts to 98, Hudson River seconds extended to 103%, Milwaukee and Prairie da Chien firsts to 87, and Erie thirds to 92. We hear of some large private sales, for European account, of Erie fourth and fifth mortgage bonds, the former at 76 a 77, and the latter at 70, which is a decline on the last transac. tions.
