cently introduced into the Northwestern States, particularly Illinois, with great success. It is thus evident that the North is not dependent on the South for any of its three great staples— sugar, cotton and tobacco—and the South will ultimately be the principal sufferer by its wicked rebellion. Tue HERALD AND THE Post Orrick ADVERTIS- 1NG.—The Postmaster of this city is required by law to invite, annually, the city newspapers to send him certified statements of their daily circulation, and B-also directed to give the Post ‘Office advertising to that journal which he is satisfled, from these statements, has the largest @aily issue. For several years the Herap has had this advertising, upon these terms, and the Postmaster has just awarded it the advertising ‘for the current year. There was never any doubt about the superiority of our circulation; but we congratulate our enemies and failing cotemporaries, that the fact is again proven officially, and without any betting nonsense. Tue Nationatiry or THE VoLUNTEERS.—The «report of the Sanitary Commission of the army, which we published yesterday, acquaints us with the important fact that at least two-thirds -of the volunteers are native Americans. This is an official refutation of the allegations of foreign journals, that our army was composed elmost entirely of foreigners. It is true that the Germans and Irish have enlisted in large numbers ; but in a country composed to a great extent of men of all nations like this, such ‘was to be expected. There Appears to be, in fact, a disposition to do as little as pos- sible until the committees are appointed and the policy of the dominant party is developed. Under the surface, or, ag I might moro appropriately state, the sud rosa ‘Work is all directed towards bringing influence upon the Speaker and Clork, the latter to appoint his deputies, and the former the officers of the House and the arrangement Of his committees. The list of the committees will not be ‘@nnounced until about Monday next. The Committees of Ways and Means, Militia, and Cities and Villages are Jooked upon as the important committees of the session, and there is a great scramble for place on the two Jattor, Madame Rumor has already made out those com- ‘mittees for the Speaker; but inasmuch as they are not fixed by Mr. Raymond himself or the decrees of Madame Rumor ratified by him, Irefrain from giving them, know- ‘ng that they are entirely unreliable. Both houses had short sessions to-day—only about one hour each.
