NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1861, As it is he would not be able to handle the scalping knife skilfully enough to gratify his ‘brutal tastes, so he determines upon butchering the entire body. Such a man is more fit fora Slaughter house than a position of military command. Party Svsscrivrioys—The different wire- pullers and politicians will soon be passing round the hat for contributions to assist in electing their respective tickets. Let none of ‘the merchants or business men of our city give the first cent to any party, except it be to assist in the election of the conservative ticket, with Dickinson at its head and Tallmadge bringing up the rear. If the mousing politicians wish to run any other ticket let them bear their own “expenses, ‘Wallack’s New Theatre. The final touches of the decorator have been given to othe interior of (his elegant establishment, and we yester- day had an opportunity of seeing it Lighted up. At first ‘viow the auditorium appears to be but very little more ‘@apacious than that of tho old house. When, however» tho eye has had time to explore its depths it is seen that ABaddition to the greater space devoted to the lobbies Aud passages, there is, both in the dimensions of Sue seats and in their number, a much larger amount of @ccommodation, The beight of the ceiling from fhe floor of the parquet is sixty-six feot, and above this again ts a second ceiling at an interyal of six feet, which allows the amplest space for ventilation. As regards the lattor essontial, nothing can be moro ‘efyetiye than the arrangements for creating and maip- faininga constant movement in the atmosphere of the house, without exposing the audience to injurious cyr- ents of air, The width of (he auditorium is seventy-two fect and the first tier stands ten feet above it, affording from the back seats of the parquet an uninterrupted view Of the siage. In order that persons occupying places Al this remote distance may hear with the same facility, the walls have been pannelled with wood, adding of course materially to the acoustic qualities of the building, which fn other respects cannot be surpassed. The great feature in the auditorium is the &bseuce of stags boxes, which gives to the eye the full sweep of the curve up to the pro- Bcenium, thus enabling those soated at the sides to see a5 well as if they were placed in front. Dissimu- Tatod, however, within the range of this curve are private Doxes, each holding about twenty persons, and, owing to ‘the peculiarity decribed, affording fall command of the Btage to all their occupants. This bold ceparture from the conventional prejudices which insist on giving to the Btage a heavy architectural front, has not only resulted ib an improvement which adds immensely to the comfort Of the audience, but which gratifles the eye by an effect as charming as it is ne ‘The stage has for framework Merely two pillars, with floral bases and capitals, from which spring au farch of similar light decoration in White and gold, The design of the drop scene is skilfully @justed to this plan, am inner framework carrying out its forms and delicate ornaments. The subject chosen by the artist is just what we would look for in the centre of an encadrement, puroly French, being a scene after Watteau, with courtly Deantios and obsequious gailants disporting themso!ves 4m a landscape whose skilfully harmonized tones form a pleasing background to thoir gay costumes, ‘The Mage is much larger than that of the old house, Doing seventy-two fect wide by sixty-five deep. The Proscenium is thirty-six feet by thirty-eight, and the drop curtain forty feet both ways. The height from the Stago to the machine loft is forty-five feet, so that it will be seen there is abundant space for the Performance, ou the most effective scale; of those Spectacular dra:nas with which Mr. Wallack at times likes to vary the light comedies which are the staple of Dis theatre. Under the stage floor tho depth is twelve foct, with exceticnt light and ventilation, Hero are situ, ated the green room and dressing rooms of the actors and Actresses. ‘The decorations of the honse are in excellent taste, there being @ very sparing choice of colors, and obly suffi cient gilding tw light up the tints used. Instead of the heavy mouldings usually employed in Me ornamentation of the boxes and upper tlor, iron ‘work, almost as rich and delicate as lace, has been laid over the wood. The effect of this innovation i§ greatly to be admired, aud the success that has attended fit will no doubt lead to its more frequent use for purposes Of architectural ornamentation. Tt ig calculated that the house will seat comfortably two thousand five hundred porsons—as large a number as any theatre is likely to be called upon to accommodate where there are s0 wany rival establishments to dispute the ¢ in the eventof fire are such as to set at roet avy apprebensionson this account, There are “threo large foliing doors leading from the auditorium to each landing, aid (he passages and stairs are of unusuaj “spaciousness, On Broadway there is an entrance of -@ighteen feet wide, and on Thirteenth street another of milar capacity. Resides these, if necessary, ready exit Ould be obtained through the stage into the Fourth aye- Due. Considered iu regard to both construction and loca- fon, it must be nimittedthat this theatre is one of the Dest planned and nveniently situated in the city. ACADEMY oF Me —Horrmann, the presti- digitateur, continues to crowd the Academy of Music with Aelighted audion So great are the crowds that tho Management has determined to reserve seats in all parts -of the house. M. ‘The recent excitement in the money market has altogether subsided, and money is freely offered at 5 per cent, though many loans continue to bear interest at 6. Paper is not so readily sold as it was; when the United States bid 7 3-10 for money merchants can hardly expect to sell their obligations at 6, though call loans may be one per cent lower. The various financial institutions of this city always require to keep on hand enough money to establish a difference, in a dull stock market, of one per cent between call loans and the best paper. It transpires that some of the speculators in foreign exchange burnt their fingers yesterday, and were unable to dispose of all the bills they had purchased. They made money, however, as a general rule; they sold at 10534 a 34 what had cost them 10734 a 108. Stocks were better to-day, though the business transacted was small, At the first board Virginias rose 1%, Missouris 4%, New York Central {, Pav cific Mail 4, Brie 34, Galena 1; the only exception to the market being Illingis Central, which declined 4. Stocks continue very scarce indeed, and the general tenor of the news is not favorable to bear party. Nothing short of an overwhelming defeat of the United States forces can cause a ma- terial decline in prices in the present condition of the money market and the present temper of the public mind. The reports from the West are more favorable for the Western railways. The stoppage of traffic on the Mississippi is driving all the grain grown in the States adjoining that river to Chicago. ‘The roads which traverse the State of Mlinois have more freight offered than they can carry, and, as @ matter of course, their passenger busi- ness will improve in consequence by and by. A fair illustration of the movement i8 afforded by the increase in the earn- ings of the Galena—-$249,245 in the last eight months—41% per cent on the capital stock. We hear that there is reason to believe that the New York Central and Erie are about to agree upon a fair tariff of freights, and so terminate the recent competition. After the board the mar- ket was quite steady. At the second board stocks were all better, and the market closed steady, the following being the last quations:—United States 6's, registered, 1881, 90 a 9014; United States 6's, coupon, 1881, 903¢ a 9034; United States 5's, 1874, 80 a 8044; Indiana 5's, 77 a 79; Virginia 6's, 5a 53; Tennessee 6's, 427% a 4314; North Carolina 6's, 6134 a 62; Missouri 6's, 43 a 431; Pacific Mail, 82°¢ New York Central, 7244 a 72%; Erie, 253% a 26; do. preferred, 46 a 47; Hudson River, 33% a 34; Harlem, 104 a 10%; do. preferred, 25 a 26; Reading» 35 a 35%; Michigan Central, 42 a 4244; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 13% a 13%; do. guaranteed, 3024 a 3034; Panama, 10824 a 109; N- linois Central, 653¢ @ 6644; Galena and Chicago, 6974-0 699%; Cleveland and Toledo, 29% a 2954; Chicago and Rock Island, 434 a 4334 icago, Burlington and Quincy, 6) a 62; Delaware, Lacka- wana and Western, 67 a 68; Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, 1734 a 18%; Illinois Central bonds, 7's, 92 a 93; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 83 a 8324. The article from the London Zimes which is copied elsewhere, shows that that journal deems it unsafe to continue to oppose purchases of our national securities in England. Its endorsement of American credit, extorted as it is by the force of the facts, will not be without its effect in England. In the course of a few weeks the con- sumption of United States Treasury notes will probably be greater in Great Britain than here, though it is possible that foreigners may have to pay a premium for them. It would be well for the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury to have an occa- sional interchange of views, as the recent pro. ceedings of the one are seriously interfering wi the policy of the other. Within the past few days the agents of the Secretary of State have Been constantly running up and down Wall street in chase of Southern money. ‘They have seized $10,000 in one place, $5,000 in another, $20,000 in a third; a box of papers in one bank, a roll of notes in another, a bundle of bonds in an- other, a trunk of valuables in a fourth—the whole belonging or supposed to belong to citizens of the States now controlled by the rebels. The consequences of these confisca- tions are a gain to the United States of perhaps $50,000 a $60,000, and a loss of several millions to the city of New York; for the moment it became Known that Mr. Seward’s agents were on the track of Southern money, every bank and banker made haste to remit all he had to Europe for safety— rightly deeming his duty to his client paramount to every other consideration. The consequence of this sudden transmission of moneys to Europe has been a considerable reduction of the bank deposits here—a rise in exchange to within 4 per cent of the specie rate—and a general disturbance of the money market which, with other causes, has re- duced the popular subscriptions to the national loan fifty per cent.
