Woe learn from Colonél Garrett, says the Memphis Apread, that a company of Creek’ in tho upper part the Nation, have gone to the assistance of the Gheroxees, who have suffered from the Kansas rob- ders. It is eid that they are building a fort on the neutral lands belonging to the Indians, near the Kansas Hine, and the Creeks and Cherokees, we think, will make the place too hot for them, It is an intrusion upon their soil; besides, the Kansians have already the possession of 800,000 acres of land belonging to the Cherokecs—a strip of land for which*the Cherokees ald General Juckson, in 1885, $500,000, out of the $5,000,000 which they received for their lands in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina. SOUTHRRN NAVY. Commodore Tatnall, who is forming the nucleus of a navy at Savannah, Ga. , invites proposals for the construt tion of five vessels of about 160 tous each for the Confede- Pate service. PROM PENSACOLA. ‘The Mobile 4: ‘says that on Saturday night, the $4 inst., one of the harbor police boats was chased by five ship's launches of the enemy, who, it is thought, eame [rom the dry dock, now anebored midway between Santa Rosa Island and the Navy Yard. Tho steamer Nia- gers, or Wabash, which arrived at the anchorage a day ‘or two previous, sailed Monday evening to the south- weat, probably for the Mississippi station. SUPERINTENDENT OF ‘THR. 1.0AN. Mr. J. D. B, DeHow bas been appointed superintendent- in-chief of the cotton, provision and general supply loan, The government could not have aclected a man better qualified to fill the post. He is well known to the country aa the able editor of the Review which bears his name, and which has cver been one of the foremost and most able advocates of Southern rights and Southern institu- tions. He was Superintendent of tho Censtis of 1860 ; is a man of much. statistical knowledge, of general informa. tion, of extensive acquaintance, good scholarship, and more than all, is very popular with the planting interest of the South. ’ It is gratifying to hear of the appointment to office of such a zealous, uncompromising, thorough. going Southerner as Mr. DeBow. M. ‘There is little movement in money to-day, and the rates remain as last quoted. The foreign exchange market closed steady at from 107% a 107% for bankers’ sterling, and from 5.3224 a 5.35 for francs. The subscriptions at the Sub-Treasury to-day on account of the 7.30 per cent Treasury notes were $2,502,096—chiefly in small amounts. The fourth instalment of six per cent was paid in gold by the banks to-day, making total payment thus far of thirty-six per cent, or $12,600,000. There was a moderate reaction in the stock mar- ket to-day, after the rather rapid advance of the past two days, and prices fell off from a quarter to one per cent, the decline being most marked inthe Western railroad shares. Rock Island, which rose at the second board yesterday to 44%, opened this morning at 44 and declined to 43%, rallying at the close to 4394 bid; Galena was freely offered this afternoon at 69, without finding buyers, against 694 bid yesterday; Iinois Central fell to 6734, and Toledo to 3034. Of the other railroad shares, New York Central declined 34, Erie 44, Harlem %, Michigan Southern, old, 34, and do. guaranteed }4. Panama rose 1 and Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien 124 percent.
