Also, when proposals were received, if contracts were awarded to the lowest bidder, if not, the reason therefor. Also, whether the contracts, a8 let, are in accordance with the specifications inviting proposais, and if any alte- rations, the reason for the samme. Also, whether any person or persons have any i interest {n the contracts thus made and awarded, or obtaining the same committee shall have power bo send for perso at any time, ‘The committee appointed under this resolution + follows: — C. H. Van Wyck, New York. H, L. Dawes, Massachusetts, W. G, Birele, New Jersey. R. E. Fenton, New York. E. B. Washburn, Illinois. Wm. 8. Holman, Indiana, James 8. Reduction in St mbouat and Hotel Fares, ‘The depression in business of every branch, caused by the oxisting war, bas had at least the salutary effect in re- Gucing everything (except army supplies) to a corres- Ponding degree. During tho past week or two the North river and Sound steamers decreased their fare all most if not quite one-half. Goods of different descriptions are also falling in price, and the prospects for better trade are very flattering, owing to the united efforts of our mer- chants, shippers, hotel keepors and others to keep pace with tho times. The last grand move 4n this direction was made by Mesers. Treadwell, ‘Whitcomd & Co., the enterprising proprietors of the St. Nicholas Hotel, who, it will be perceived by an advertise- mont in another column, propose to reduce the price of board at their house from its present rates to $2 per deim, ~ without abating any of the luxurics of their table. ‘The St. Nicholas being the favorite resort of strangers + coming to the city, and withal the best patronized, this timely and liberal reduction will create a revolution in ‘the business of botel keeping, and c ause others to adopt the same plan, or lose money every day. This arrange- 1) Ment, taking effect on the Ist proximo, when most of our pleasure seckers return from the coantry, the same acti” ‘vity which was visible at the St. Nicholas in times ‘or ‘peace and tranquillity will again be witnessed ther mext week. re after Woeren Garpex—Pexerrt or Mr. J. CocertminG AT THE WATERING PLACES.—While tho yoice of melody is nearly silenced in the city, it is revi ving at the watering places. Gustavus Geary and his daughter Mina are announced for two concerts this week at Rocka- ‘sway, by special invitation—one this evening at the Pa- vilion and anothor on Saturday evening at the United States Hotel. Activity at the Washington Navy Yard—The Men Employ ed—The Ordnance Foundry—The Work Dene There— The Iron Foundry—~Manufacture of Shot and Shell— Daily Arrival of Marines, ce. At this yard the most unparalleled activity prevails. Capt. Dahigren and his officers are almost deluged with business, while the former alone is besieged with callers on businoss of a public, private and curious nature. There are employed in and about the yard between fourteen and fifteen hundred men, not including marines and sailors. A portion of this force is engaged in active operations both night and day, including Sundays. Of course the ordnance foundry is the peculiar institu” tion of the place. The casting of guns at this shop is often witnessed by a large crowd of eager spectators, not ex” cepting droves of officers’ widows and cousins of the ninth generation. The employes of this shop commence theit daily course of labor at five o’clock in the morning, and con- tinue it (with a very brief intermission for dinuer, which latter is carried to them), till seven o'clock in the even- ing. The number thus employed is forty ‘A portion of these mould and cast ono gun (generally a twelve Pounder), duriug the above specitied working period, each bs It is roughly estimated that between three and four thousand twelve pounders, and five hundred other sized guns have boen cast in this building since its construction. Next to guns, the casting of shot and shell occupies the Greatest amount of attention. In the ordnance foundry (referred to above) sixty-four rifled shell aro cast,on an average, each da: welve and sixty-eight pounders are also manufactured in largo numbers. Here they make boat carriage work and com- position strajs for rifled guns. Only one of the latter is prepared in a day. Fuses are also attended to. Of these six hundred and forty-eight are made in aday. On this work nine persons are cmployed, some of whieh boys. The modus operandi is thas:—One man moulding and casting, two or three make the “cores” or holes, while the remainder scrape and brush away the adhering sand, At the iron foundry about fourteen thousand shot are cast por day, inclusive of ail sizes andykinds, from canis. ter to fifty pounders. A day’s work for a single individu- al is, of canister, eight hundred; fifty pounders, twelve, and of grape, one hundred. In various other places throughout the yard the mould- ing and casting of implements of war is prosecuted with great vigor, on various scales, to suit the convenience or Capabilities of each respect've place. Owing to this pe- culiarity, it would be a matter of almost utter impossi- bility for a Teporter to obtain accurate information of the total weight of shot cast at this yard during the period of ‘one week, or even the lesser time of one day. The rapidity with which shells are finished off and boxed up, at the Shell House, is astonishing compared with times gone by. ordnance and machine departments are the scene of labor night and day. The lofts of the buildings in the yard have been turned into a kind of quarters for the marines. These are here in exccedingly large ‘numbers, and the ery is ‘still they come."? Physically, they are'not ag fine a act of men &s one was wont to see at this yard prior to the war, Yet, on the whole, they are @ hardy set, and shige) an unusual amount of quickness and clese percep- ion. Everything that is nocessary to keep a ship in repair or build a new one is being prepared in abundance, A great numnber of anchors are on hand, and what {3 more, a great number are being made. To’make a set of frigate's anchors (four), each weighing between seven and eight hundred pounds, it takes about a month. Our War Maps—Colored Edition.
