The money market is again easier to-day. We hear of a large line of paper going at 7 per cent, and quite a large number of names are current at Wevnespay, Jan. 16— 9a12. Oncall, money abounds at 5 a 6 per cent. The tendency of our money market to increased ease will assist the negotiation of the new Treasu- ry notes on Saturday next. The prevailing opin- ion in the street appears to be that they will go at from 8 to 10 per cent, and that the bids will con- siderably exceed five millions in amount. Much, however, must depend upon political events. The enly fear ofmoneyed menis, that the President may not show firmness in the present emergencies. If he continues to administer the government with courage and boldness, people will be ready enouhg to lend money to the United States. In this view, Mr. Buchanan's answer to Col. Hayne is likely to assist the negotiation on Saturday. The stock market continues firm and even buoy- fant, thongh there is not much outside busi- ness, There are no stocks in the street, and there is @ lively inquiry for stocks from parties who have sold short on the political erisis, Tilinois Central, which bas been freely gold, advanced this morning to 83%, and this afternoon to 85%; it sold three days ago at 76. Reading also advanced, and the general Western railroad list was higher. Tennessee 6's fell off a fraction, and Erie was also rather lower. In the afternoon a very large business was done, and Prices were uniformly higher than in the morning. ‘The 12 per cent Treasury notes fluctuate between 2% and 2% premium. The Hudson River road will pay the interest up- on its first mortgage bonds on the Ist of February, and will close the wansfers on the 19th inst. The Insurance Company of North America, of Philadelphia, has declared a semi-annual dividend of 6 per cent, and an extra dividend of the same amount; the Hamilton Woollen Company, a quar- terly dividend of 6 per cent. ‘The semi-annual interest on all the bonds of the State of Tennessee was paid in New York in fall on the Ist day of January. ll the railroad com- panies, to whom State bonds had been issued to aid in building their roads, furnished their quota of interest as provided by law, except the Winches- ter and Alabama, and the Edgefield and Kentucky. The Governor of the State has appointed Mr. Lamb, of Fayetteville, Receiver ofthe former, and A. Anderson, of Nashville, Receiver of the latter road. These roads will be operated by the Stato authorities until the back interest is liquidated. Mr. Arthur, Superintendent of the Illinois Cen- tral Railroad, writes under date of the 12th:— The largest freight earnings ever made by our road in one day were yesterday—$15 676. The weather is ine for farmers to gather their corn and take it to market, and if hey oe was higher we should be overwhelmed with it. it is, we find it dificult to do the business offered promptly. Immense quantities are needed, and if the shipments are made iasecure none will be sent, and suffering wil! be the reault. The people of the South know this, and will be governed accordingly. We have received a copy of the message of Lieutenant Governor Hammond, of Indiana (the Governor, Ashbel P, Willard, having died in Octo- ber last), It gives no information relative to the financial position of the State, merely referring to the report of the Auditor upon the subject, which has not yet been published. The Governor says:— During the time that | have been acting a8 the kxecu- tiveof the State there bas been no question presented to me, save one, that can by any possibility affect the pe- cuniary interests of Indiana. The semi-annual intereet on our public debt for January, 1861, was maturing, without the means in the State treasury to meet it. There was no mode of liquidating that interest except by bor- rowing money. And believing that the citizens of In- diana desired that her obligations should be kept, the Auditor and Treasurer of State, together with myvelf, taking as our autbority an act of the General Assembiy ‘ibing the duties of Governor, approved May 27, Ts03, made @ loan of $125 000 from Messrs. Winslow, Lanier & Co. of the city of New York, giving our obi gations to pay the same in May next, out of the revenue for the year 1860. It isa matter much to be regretted that Indias in such 4 condition that she is compelled to go into the market to borrow money for any purpose whatever, But it i# due to truth to state that this ne- eesnity would not have existed out for the failure of the Senate of ludiana to passa revenue bill for the years 1867-8.
