The following is a comparative statement of the ex- ports (exclusive of specie) from New York to forcign enapbhhanphien: spare 1860. For the week... givens 2,112, 3 Previously reported. 86,417 22 diate oasis 219 Since Jan. 1...... $00,557,904 65,077,096 08,207,671 Our export tables certainly fail to furnish any evidence of the commercial distress and paralysis so much talked of. The exports of last week, of which the chief articles were cotton and breadstuffs, were pearly twice as heavy as those of the corresponding week last year, and more than three times as heavy as those of the cor- responding week of 1858. It is now evident that the exports from this port this year will exceed one hundred millions of dollars—fully thirty per cent more than those of any previous year, But for the re- cent political agitations which have checked the move- ment of cotton from Southern ports, the exports of the United States this calendar year would have amounted to a figure far beyond the most sanguine caleulations. As it is, they will probably exceed $400,000,000. We can hardly quote any change in the money market, though the feeling continues more cheerful than it was a week ago. A line of very choice paper could not be passed this morning below fifteen per cent. There is so much embarrassment among houses which have relied upon collections at the South and the West that for some time to come confidence can hardly be restored. Many people, too, are waiting for the arrival of the Persia, which is expected to bring less cheerful news from Eu- rope, and others hold aloof in anticipation of trouble in Washington, and possibly civil war. The Etna to-day brought $300,000 in gold from England. A fair business was done to-day in foreign exchange, though the market was not sustained till the close. We quote bankers’ bills 1033; a 104 for sterling, and 5.40 a 5.4734 for france. Some houses ask 105, but we hear of ho sales at that price. Commercial bills are held at 1011; 103; a pretty fair buginese was done to-day at 102 a 34. Whatever merchants may say of other departments of trade, they have no reason to complain of the condition of our foreign exchanges: as compared with the state of affairs a month ago, the improvement is marked. | Stocks were higher this morning, and quite a largo number of orders were filled at a fair advance. After the board they fell off; in the afternoon the market was lower and closed weak. There was an active inquiry for State stocks this morning, and al! descriptions were high- er. Feople are beginning to realize the fact that if the confederacy be dissolved the States will require to preserve a good credit in order to borrow; and if the confederacy be maintained, they will enjoy as good credit as they have done heretofore. ‘There are no movements of any consequence in the spe- culative stocks, and prices fluctuate from day to day without any particular interest for the public. The New Orleans Prayune of Thureday night, December 38, say No important change took place in the general market today. With regard to the Ilinois State debt, a statement of which we give below, a Springficld correspondent says:— Our public debt is being reduced very fast, and should be no considered a burden upon'so great and pros. perous a State as Ilinois. By the present ——s ot this State, a tax of two mills is ind collected, which is to be used for the Purpeer of paying the State ebtedness. But it is not very often for by those ling the State indebtedness, they preferring to hold Donde of the State, which are po Mn worth a pre mium, to calling for the money upon them; consequently a large amount of money accrues in the treasury. There is a law requiring theGovernor to use this money, when not called for, in buying up certain kinds of State indebt edness. The people of the State have become tired of this two mill tax, and believe that it is no longer navessa- ry. Although a good thing twelve year ago, when our Present constitution was adopted, and when we wero overwhelmed with debt, with not half the facilities for ying the same that now exist, yet now the neceas!t ‘or the measure has departed, our State is in good credi our bonds worth a large premium, and it is not right thal our citizens should still be taxed in the same manner they were several years ago, When there is no longer any ne comsity for it.
