2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monnay, Dec. 10—6 P. M. ‘The bank statement of to-day compares as fol- Increase... $677,904 20,951 «150,249 1,461,449 The increase of loans continues; so that the Merchants cannot complain that the banks have not kept faith with them, The increase of deposits shows, too, that the mer- chants are simply keeping their money in bank to be prepared for emergencies. So long as the de- Posit line continues to increase the banks run no immediate risk. The discount line now stands at a higher point than previously tonched since August Jast, and higher than would have been reached, in the ordinary course of events, before March or April next. Considering, however, that the foreign exchanges are a!) in favor of this country, and that the merchants have every reason to 5us- tain the banks, the dangers of the present ¢xpan- siou are less than they otherwise would have been, The specie reserve remains pretty steady, not- withstanding the drain of specie to the South, By the end of the week we shall begin to receive gold from Europe, and another remittance from tigh Walifornia will be due about the same time. To- day about $100,000 went South, mostly to New Orleans, where exchange on New York stands at A per cent discount. There is no change in the money market, The only rates at which any paper sells atall arelia 18 a2 per cent, and nothing but first class signa- tures can be passed at these rates, The discount brokers report absolute dulness in their business, ‘he applications at bank continue moderate; but an upon us more than Doston continues to safe, There banks had suspended. There can be no question that they are ina very insecure position, and that they cannot expect us to carry them through. The foreign exchange market opens with a very Jight demand indeed. Bankers are asking 105 a ‘104, and there is a little business doing at the lower figure. There are mercantile bitls im mar- ket at 100a 101. The stagnant condition of the exchange market arises, not from the political condition of the country, bnt from the by mittances we have mode to Europe this year, our light purchases of fo! importers have already remitted for the next season; the weak houses cannot sell their paper, and will not remit at all. Unless, therefore, the fall in cotton and breadstaffs should be greater than now seems probable, the exchanges may rule in our favor for some time to come. The stock market, which revived a shade on Saturday evening on the strength of more fa- vorable despatches frem Washington, relapsed this morning into its previous condition of dal- ness, The feature of the day was the dectine of United States sixes to 95, and of the fives of 137: too. Whether the report of Mr. Cobb's resigna- zion had anything to do with the decline it is difi- cult to say. An infusion of new energy into the y re- nd ‘Treasury might perhaps help the prices of govern- | gent stocks. The government will have to bor- row nearly ten millions to meet Treasury notes maturing before New Year and for other purposes. It is urged, on very good grounds, that the new notes should be sevens, not sixes, and that they Should be sold for what they will command. But | whatever is done should be done quickly. Tennes- gees were steady this morning; Missouris and Virginias a shade lower. All the railway stocks were lower this morning than they were at the close of business on Saturday, though higher than op Saturday morning. Some further orders were filled for Winois Central shares, which advanced under the impulse. Many people are inquiring what people are going to do with their money when business is at an end, and United States and | State stocks unsafe investments. The problem is a curions one, and will take some time to | solve. After the jury had rendered the verdict Lobianno was placed at the bar for sen. tence, when it appeared that while he was Pronecation his profession in the shaving and irdressing department of the Metropolitan, he often removed the extraneous beard from the face of he Recorder, who used to remark how stylish Lobianno dressed. A lengthy colloquy ensued between the Court and the prisoner, which was wound up by the Recorder reminding Lobiaino that he was ouce arrested on a charge of murder.
