Whe Derby Institute, Broadway. ‘This fine new marble structure, the property of Mr. H. ‘W. Derby, has just been completed, and will be opened to the public bis week. It is situated between Houston and Bleecker streets, and comprises s lot thirty-four feet by two hundred in depth. The lower part is occupied by a lofty store, occupying the estire arca of the building, ‘witht basement and subcellar beneath, and posseesing ‘the rare feature of being unbroken by any columns in its ‘entire length or width. The design is in the Italian style of architecture, and Invites comparison with any building bitherto seen on Broadway. On the firat floor are four arched openings in tront—throe belonging to the store, and the fourth form. tng the grand street entrance to the gallery. This portion of the design is eo skilfully managed asto have entirely overcome what usually appears a defect in all buildings where it is impossible to obtain a central entrance. The cornice over the ground floor is made to break ingeniously ‘over the entrance doorway, ina bandsomely eculptured pediment, by Kuner & Sexton. The carved Sgures repre- sent two cherubs reclining on a globe, one holding & wreath and the other » palm branch, to typify the coamopolitan and peaceful character of the fine arts. On the second @tory are three besutifully carved allegorical female Cgures of the size of life, executed by the same modellers, and representing Architecture, Painting and Sculpturo— each holding the proper symbols of ber art, Between the windows of the three other stories are niches, latended to receive smaller sculptured figures. ‘The art galleries ocoupy the whole of the second story. At the bead of the spacious stairway is the entrance to the principal one, a splendid room 15 feet by 32 feet, and 22 fect bigh, with coved ceiling, and amply lit by three large domed skylights. The offect of this room, with its ong array of paintings on each side, is very striking. An open archway leads from this gallery 10 a smaller central ona, 2% feet by 22 feet, also lit by skylight; and this again as access to the front gallery, 60 feet by 22 feet, extend- ing to Broadway—the whole forming one spacious suit of -opartments 200 feet long, running through from Broadway ‘to Mercer street. The walls of the galleries are lined with dark green cloth and maroon velvet, aod the floor is Covered with red carpeting, forming @ subdued contrast Of colors most refreshing to the eye, The building has been erected from the design and under the superin- ‘Gendence of Mr. J. R. Hamilton, architect. THE DUSSELDORF COLLECTION. ‘This collection, which was purchased some time ago ‘by Mr. Derby, occupies the principal gallery. I: has been added to considerably since it was brought here, and arrangements have been completed in Europe by ‘whiob the pictures will be periodically changed and fresh Ones substituted, thus Keeping up the attraction of fovelty. It is wonderful to see what difference ‘of effect is produced on the old paintings of the collection by their transference to this spacious aad Gplendidly lighted spartment. They do not look like the Bame pictures, fresh beauties and perfections being Drought cut which had hitherto eecsped notice. As, how- ever, Our readers are familiar with most of them, and as 6 bave still heavy claims on our space in conection ‘with this article, we will pass on to the new feature of at- traction which the Institute offers to the student and dover of art. THE JARVES COLLECTION. ‘This collection of “old masters” is the fruit of eight genre’ stady and research in Earope, cbiefy in italy. ‘Tt numbers 160 specimens, of which 120 are now on exhi- Dition in this building; the remainder, chiefly large and (portant pictures, including epecimens of Andrea del Garto, Fra Bertolomeo, Bronzino, and other well Known ‘eames, will pot be removed from Italy until the success or failore of Mr. Jarves’ idea is fully ascertained. His aim in getting together these pictares is twofold: first, to trace the progress of painting materially from its Cradest steges in Italy to \\¢ ripest developement six centuries later; secondly, to illustrate the motives of each epoch, particularly those arising from ‘the control the Catholic church exercised over art. The entire pian, if ever means aro secured to carry It out, would embrace the seme systematic chronological @urvey of all the schools and periods of painting of bis. torical importance among al! civilized nations as the foundation of a grest national museum of art and public gallery tor America. The present museum is & com: mencement, and it is confined chiefly to the importart schools of painting of Floreace, Venice, Siena aud Umbria, although it poesesres good rpectmens of many others. While it does not profess to offer to the pub Ue masterpieces, or thore works on which are based the reputations of the great names jw art, it does, howover, give characierietio specimens of many of tem, wht ‘are not as yet represented in the National Gallery Loudon, nor in the Louvre at Maris, such as the Gentile | @s Fabriano and Sotoma; while others, tito Bano di | Pietro, the Fra Argelico of Siena, and Lo Spagaa, are not to be found eithor in those galleries, 9 even in Chose of Torin. The last week hae been an exceedingly busy one with these disinterested patriots, and although confident that they will be able to control the ten million of dollars raized by tax, and disburse the public money to suit their own taste, yet there has been a great deal of fluttering amongst them at the symptoms of s general union of the Wealthy citizens on a set of candidates whose antecedents and pertonal interests will guarantee @ better protection to the true interests of the city, and out off the peoula. tions through which our City Fathers, without any malary, bave become wealthy in & short timo, and such men as Law and Vanderbilt scoured docks And ferries, that word wotth shondands of dollars, without paying into the city treasury tile frat cont, and im face of the fact that others stood ready to pay a enug sum tor the same rights. A person could not visit the favorite resorts of this lags of politicians, any evening during the past week, ‘Without seeing | squad of them busy concocting affairs | and preparing general bargain and sale of places and ® division of the supposed spoils if successful, and that, foo, with such @ bold hand ‘‘that he who runs may read.”’ They bave #0 long had their way about the City Hall and plundered the city without any opposition, except a little howling after they had accomplished their end and pock- eted the epol's, that they have come to believe that their buginets was really a legitimate one, and aay scheme that would benefit their pockets was in reality one that no ono bad tne right to object to. Tne election ia to take piace two weeks from next Tueeday, and there are to be elected nine Aldermen, or one from each odd numbered Aldermanic district, ands fall board or twenty-four Councilmen, about forty Con- tables, one School Commissioner from each ward and two or three vacancies, # School Inspector from every ‘ward and about forty four Trustees; likewise a Civil Jas- tice tp the new Judicial or Eighth district, comprising the Sixteenth and Twentieth wards. These numerous offices control actual and proposed spoils toan amount that bas caused the mouths of all the hungry politicians to water, both inside and out of the present ring that exiats about the City Hall. It ts not to be wondered at that the governing clasees are in a state of turmoil and general ex»itement, and increasing instead of dimi nisbing. The republicans are probably more thoroughly aroused than elther of the othor parties. Their recont success has given them new courage and a stock to trade upon. Their Central Committee have, therefore, already com- menced paving the way, and are preparing for @ gonoral seizure of all the rich placers about the city. Their chief organ, the Tribune, hes raised a little consternation in thetr camp by coming out for independeat nom! nations; but those who control the nominations in that party are governed by the same mo tives that guide those of the other factions in the city, the only difference being in the kind of liquor which they drink, instead of ‘red eye” and “Irish whis- key.” They have @ strong inclination for those beve- rages having a German brand. As politicians they in re ality belong to the same class of the strikers aud blowors that run the machines for the #0 called democratic fac tions, and are naturally indignant at tho wholesome pro. position of the Tribune to repudiate them as ward mans gers. The only thing that we could bear yesterday with this class was » general swearing at Greeley for even in- Uimmating that he would not support their nominations, closing with the declaration that they would have mat- ters their own way in epite of the newspspers, They are exceedingly confident of success; and through their bar. | galing, and the fight which is gure to be made between Mozartand Tammany—with far more vigor than in the last election, for the reason that it is generally undor- stood that bis ‘‘Excellency’’ the Mayor intends to step In for a deal to suit bimeelf—they count upon carrying se- Yeu if not eight out of the nine Aldermen to be elected, ‘and a majority of the Councilmen. With this eure thing,» they think, they have no notion that their dish shall be spoiled by the ory of independent nominations, bat only work the harder, and make better offers to the grogshop Politician who claims to hold in bis hands s certain nam- ber of votes. .. The hazgers on to the Tammany and the Menwrt fac. Mons are in a delightful state of anxiety jast now. The Tammany boys are getting the best of the fight, and are drawing many over to their side from the Mozarters, who see in the vote polled for the respective tickets at the November election that Tammany {¢ the strongest party of the two, and by uniting with them they will Stand the beat chance of sharing ia the rich placers about the City Hall. This fact is weakening the Mozart party more than ts generally supposed and ts going to furaish one of the intsresting points (n thie contest. The Tem many Hall General Committee will be called together on Monday or Tuesday night, the primary meetings will be called for an early day, and their ticket trotted out be fore the close of the present week. The same wil! be the case with the Mozart party, who will exhibit their standard bearers tn the contest witlin the cext ten days.
