Wo have folid ved | him in his noble struggle as the champion of au- thors’ rights, and we have felt forcibty the stern Justice of his remarks. To literary men, and af interested in literature, this book will be especially interesting, while to the hundreds of thonsanda in fed, earnest prayer, W000 the cap was drawn over us this country to whom Mr. Reade’s works have be- come housenold companions, it cannot fal in ea- listing their warmest sympathies for the author. Perhaps no writer that ever lived has had to con- tend more against literary pirates and piratical and Unfair booksellers than he has, or suffered more, both in pocket and feeling, through @ parcel of un- scrupulous dramatic sppropriators. From the commencement of his distinguished brated novel, “Peg Woffington,” was only ten pounds, although the work had a very large sale, and finally he became @ loser even of that, and more beside, on the transaction, owing to a series of vexatious circumstances resuitiog in litigation, which is always a very expensive, but not always a very equitable proceeding. Mr. Reade contends in the volume before us against a real evil, and the manner in which he ad- vocates justice to French dramatists and English authors, whose novels are dramatized—the former in particular— adaptations of whose plays are 80 frequently put upon the English stage without pay- must win him universal respect. We have ways had a very high opinion of the superior talents of Mr. Reade as a novelist and diamatist, agree with us. In graphic power, stem vigor and picturesque simplicity he stands unrivalled. In knowledge of humaa nature, and particularly of woman, he exce's even Thackeray, who is some- times too bitter to be true. In preaching the doe- trine contained in this ‘‘Kighth Commandment’ he occasionally speaks with ao almost terrible ferce ne-s. But we feel that he has good cause, aud our admiration of the writer is in no degre lesseaed. We are led to expect shortly another of Mr. Reade's brilliant: fictions, of which ‘‘ Christie Johns o “It is Never too Late to Mend,” ‘‘ White Lies,’ “Love me Little, love me Long,’ and others, will have been the foreranners. Ip conclusion, we thank him for the great service knowledge and recreation he has afforded our- selves. Mr. Reade is a D.C. L. of Oxforl, and was formerly a fellow of a college there. He ia also a barrister at law. Three Bexe s in California JAMES WHITFORD HUNG IN BAN FRANCISCO.
