te heen ee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowpay, Oct. 15-6 P. M, ‘The bank statement of today compares as fol Jews with that of last week:— Bano Sas ears 7 20,147,828 Got 38 "ager A08 oz, 108 is ai i oes ‘Hitmen ~— “a6 4,108 At the present time the banks really hold about two millions more gold than is shown above, as the North Star's remittance—$1,971,645—arrived too late on Saturday to count in the average. Taking this into consideration, the statement must be regarded as exceedingly strong. The continued curtailment of loans, which pro- gresses without causing any inconvenience to the mercantile community, demonstrates alike the strength of our merchants and the cautious spirit in which business is being car- ried on. The curtailment since the middle of Au- gust is now about eight millions and half, Next week the specie will probably run up to twenty-two millions, and the loans may perhaps show a small iwerease. The city banks have not for many years been in so strong a position as they occupy at pre- sent. ‘The money market works very easily; the stan- @ard for call loans is six per cent, and the class of paper negotiable at 6 a 64 is expanding. To-day the demand was quite light, both among the bro- kers and at the discount houses; at two P.M. there was a large amount of money which failed to find employment at the current rate of interest. The business of the Sub-Treasury to-day was moderate; the receipts were $179,022, of which $125,000 from customs; the payments, $197,458; the balance this evening, $4,478,445, The exchange market continues in a lifeless con- dition. The leading bankers are asking 109 for sterling, and 5.15 for francs, but the market is sup- plied with bankers’ bills at 108 a j, and 5.164 a 174. We hear of some very excellent mercantile bills at 1084 a j and 5.20. It seems pretty evident that the market has decidedly broken down for the | reason, The stock market to-day showed strength with- out activity. It is probable that a large number of casual operators and purchasers for investment are holding off in order to see what may be the effectof the November election. Some persons still think, or pretend to think, that Lincoln’s election would be followed by trouble in the financial world; while others feel or affect perfect confidence in the quiet acquiescence of the South in the de- cree of the ballot-box. Pending the uncer- tainty, a number of persons bave ceased operating and are quiet spectators of the move- ment in stocks. Hence, while there is no stock pressing on the market, and the October traffic on the railroads satisfies the most sanguine of the ball, prices remain generally steady, without much veal business. To-day there was a fair demand for New York Central, which advanced to 904 in the middle of the day, closing 90 bid, against 894 at the close on Saturday. The managers of the road make no secret of their opinion that it will receive $1,000,000 and earn 2 per cent on its stock this month. Galena was also active, selling at 78}, and closing 78] bid, against 77} on Saturday. It ap- pears that the smart operators who made such a neat thing by selling Rock Island short, on the pri- vate understanding that the dividend would be passed, have been selling Galena also. If all we hear be true, they are not likely to make much by the experiment. Our information leads us to beli that the Galena will earn more money this fall and winter than it has earned since 1856. The other Western shares were fairly active at a small advance. Pacific Mail advanced 34 per cent this morning, and 24 more this afternoon, on rumors that Mr. Vanderbilt is to enter the board and settle the Roberts opposition. Panama continues steady. The demand for State stocks continues lively. There is a better market for Virginias, Missouris and Tennessees than there has been before for some time. This afternoon the market was active and *tocks closed irregular at the following qaotations:— Virginia 6's, 90) a 3; Missouri 6's, 79} a j; Canton, 20 a 4; Cumberland Coal, 12) a 14; Pacific Mail, “3 a 4; New York Central, 90 a {; Erie, 39) a §; Hudson River, 64 4 4; Harlem, 21{ a 22; Harlem NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1860, —TRIPLE SHEET. It is reported by telegraph thai the Galena and Chicago road delivered on the 12th and 13th over 175,000 Lashels of grain. We hear it stated on good authority that the Chi- cago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company will declare a dividend of four per cent about the Ist of November, leaving a considerable cash sur- lus, 4 The earnings of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad the first week of October were:— Gain in 1860......
