FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, Sept. 10—6 P. M, The bank statement to-day compares as follows with that of last week:— September 1, $129 027 690 19 035,980 9.263.849 79,068 500 September 8. 127,990,889 19,187,719 9,688,894 77,112,611 th ais ‘This statement must be reg@pded as an exceed- ingly strong one. The curtailment in the bank dis- eounte since the 25th August is nearly three mil- Hions of dollars; yet there is so much money in the @ountry and so little real inquiry for it, that the first stir over, the money market is no more strin- gent now than it was a fortnight since, when the loans were $3,000,000 heavier. This isa pretty effec- ‘eal answer to the theories of those who looked for a new crisis this fall on the streugth of the condition ef the banks. It is satisfactory to know, at the pame time, that this large curtailment has been effected without inconveniencing commerce or @enying to the West the assistance needed for the movement of the crops. The money and note bro- kere report no undue increase of produce paper in the street, from which it may be inferred that the bankers are granting accommodation as freely as it is needed. The decline in the deposita and the small increase of specie betray the drain that has net in westward. At Chicago, Milwaukee and Cin- e@mnati the want of currency will probably continue for some time to affect the condition of our banks, though, of course, the ultimate result of this condi- tion of things must be beneficial both to the coun- twy and to the city. A California steamer will ar- rive this week with nearly a million in gold, and unless exchange should advance the next specie statement may show a further increase. At the opening of business this morning @ lead- | ing drawer advanced his rate of exchange on Eu- vope; but, the demand ceasing altogether at the ad- vance, he abandoned it, and subsequently other houses were willing to draw at @ material conces- sion from the rate current per the Vanderbilt. First class bankers’ bills on London are. offered to- day at 109f and a brokerage. On Paris, sight bilts are offered at 5.11j and a brokerage. At these rates | it will be seem, on comparing the price of gold: here | with the price in Europe, that there is no profit | im shipments of specie to Europe. There is hardly | any profit on shipments against bills at 1093; any- thing below that involves a positive loss to the shipper. As, therefore, even at the decline the demand this morning is quitemoderate, it is fair to presume that the shipments of specie this week ‘will not be very large. The amount of produce bills in market is about as large as last week. Money is quoted easier by most of the brokers ‘and banking houses. Call loans were offered to- day at 6} a 7, and late in the day loans were made as low as 6. The contraction of the past fortnight and the advance in the rate of interest have brought money into the street, and the supply is becoming larger than the demand. The want of desirable paper is a common sabject of complaint among bro- kers. Considering the general business prospect, and the enormous increase of production, good commer- cial paper is singularly scarce, and choice names, ‘with 40 a 60a 70 days to run, would go readily to-day at 6 a6} percent. Each day weakens the faith of the public in the oft repeated predictions of a monetary crisis this fall. ‘The stock market was active this morning, and the tone of the dealings buoyant. After the or- @ers of the day had been filled an effort was made, with some success, to depress prices, and between the boards the market was dull. In the afternoon stocks rallied and closed steady. The New York | shares were to-day more popular than the Western | stocks. New York Central advanced } in the | Smount lo their morning, closing 86], against 86 on Saturday; Erie advanced }, Hudson 3, Harlom }. Illinois Cen- wal, Rock Island and Galena were about steady in the morning, but « shade lower afterward. A foolish story was current in the street to the effect that the Rock Island would pass the fall dividend. We understand that the dividend check book has been ordered; the only question is whether the dividend shall be 3, 4 or 5 per cent. The last divi- @end was one per cent less than the company had earned and might have paid at the time; the re- cent large increase in the earnings, and the pros- pect for the futare, in consequence of the opening of the Mississippi and Missouri roed, ought to in- @uce the directors to be more liberal this time. ‘The shareholders seem to consider themselves en- titled to five per cent this fall, The Michigan shares were steady at the first board, and in de- mand afterward. We understand that rather more than half the holders of the second mortgage bonds of the Michigan Southern express their willingness to accept the offer made by the com- pany last week; the official notices will shortly be published. Reading was better to-day. Pacific Mail was steady. The business in bonds to-day was fair; prices vary bat little, The following were the closing quotations of the day:—Virginia Slja}: Missouri 6's, 81} 8 3; Canton, 19 a 20; Cumberland Coal preferred, 13}; Pacific Mail, 8240 83; New York Central, 86] a {; Eric, 29j a {; Hudson River, 694 0 60; Harlem, 18} « 3; H=:lem preferred, 473 a 48; Reading, 47 a j; Michigan Central, 714 a 4; Michigan Southern and Northern Indians, Island, 78] a |. ! ‘The Secretary of the Treasury, it seems, has | taken the alarm from the movement in oar money | market, and has abandoned the idea of throwing be seen that be wants $10,000,000, to be paid in by | the 22d November next, and that he offers in ex- , change for the money 5 per cent United States | bonds, with ten years to run. A longer bond | would have commanded a better price; and Novem: — ber is the worst month in the year, next to October, | to negotiate such » loan. The bids, by the way, must be made in October; so that the government | win Lave to coutend with all the adverse circam- — jich affect the money warket in the | stances fall of bw, yeat. Of the mort- gages on the land, $1,752,000 of bonds have been | discharged by collections in the Land Office. The freeland bond lien will be discharged as soon as the balance ‘of the bonds, which fell due Ist Sep- tember, are presented for payment, releasing 315,- | 000 acres of land, of which 195,039 are sold, and $2,589,330 67 of notes are now held for general interest purposes. The reduction of the first mort- gage and payment of the frecland bonds and float- ing debt reduce the liabilities of the company to about $16,000,000—one million less than the ori- ginal issue of construction bonds. The annual statement of the Ilinois Central of December 31, 1857, shows of funded debt. $19,195,500 00 Of scrip and notes payable... + 8,000,842 24 Thus, upwards of six millions of debt has been discharged within three years. The construction bonds have a first mortgage upon the road, and upon 2,00,000 acres of land of these bonds $15,459,- 600 are outstanding. The Cincinnati Gazette of the 7th inst. says:— D.
