Soon after disembarking, the visiters were escorted to the house of Engine Company 43, where a bount tion was prepared, to which ample justice wae done, the sail down the Hudeon baying whetied the appetites of the gallant firemen, After resting for short time, the members of Engiae Company 43 conducted their guests to the foot of 12th street and Tenth avenue, where tbe procession in honor of the visiting company was apnouneed to form. For some time past extensive arrangements have been going on to make the demoratra- tion imposing, and it must be gratuying to our uptown fremen—resiiente of Manhattanville and Harlem—to know that their efforts have becn crowned with success. Soon after seven o’ciock about eighteen companies, num: bering at least a thousand men, formed inio procession in 125th etreet, the right resting on Tenth avenue, and proceoded ‘Wrough the principal streets in the following order:— VIRST DIVISION William T. Many of the eng nes and hose carts. were tastefully de- corated and illuminated witu colored janterus, the fire- men were dressed in uniform and held torebes io their bands, the bands made melody along the line of march, aud the evening wes fine—in short everything contributed to call out the enthusiasm of the people as the torchlight procession marched througa the avenues. Toe citizens turned out en masse to witness the demon- gtration, and, judging from the enthusiasm which was evinced by the spectators, they appeared highly delight- ed with the appearance of the representatives of the Albapy Fire Department, a8 well as of their own fathers and brothers. At the coruer of Ile; street and Thicd avenue there was a large American ilag suspended acroes tho street, to which was appended the words:—* Weicome, Phenix Hose Company from Aibiny.”” ‘A small cannon was placed here also, the resi- dence of the foreman of Eogine ‘Company No. 36 being close by. His house was “Yuminated, and whea the procession arrived at this point the cannon was tired and the firemen gave hearty cheers. They proceeaed to the house of Engine Company No. 35, where the compa nies disbanded. The Phenix Company partook of a sip- per furnished ‘by their guests, and through the hospi- tality of the firemen of the Wostern distriet the various companies were furnished with refreshments. Singular Atmospheric Phenomenon at Sandy Hook, N. J. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. One of the most singular of phenomena it has been my fortune to witness for some time was seen from the Above place on Sunday afternoon, August26. Deeming it of sufficient interest to the public, | makogho following statement of facte, leaving it to the sayants to inquire into the “whys and wherefores:""— At about half past five o'clock P. M,a cloud, of a very unusual shape and color, was observed in the western sky, and was supposed to be a whirlwind, destined to re- sult in a “waterspout.’”’ Although almoat impossible to describe, the following wi! give an idoa of its ap pearance — From the centre of an elliptically shaped cloud of pro- bably two miles in length, and of a peculiarly grayiah Diack color, depended, perpendicular to the horizm, a whitish cylindrical cloud, apparently hollow, the end of which nearest the earth had the appearanco of an anger; the other extremity was the converging point of a epiral and intensely biack cloud, the lines of the spiral being distinctly marked by a whiter color than the eurrounding mass, The whole continually revolved with a screw-like motion from west to east, and with more or les rapidity from the time it was test observed until {ts flual disappearance an hoar afterwards, The wint being (rom (he west at the time, the whole mass wae driven slowly eastward; bat there seemed to be ay under current in the neighborhood of the cloud, for that »art of it apart from and lig er than the circles about the cylinder was continually moved im detached portions to the portheast. TvEepay, August 28—6 P. M. The following is 2 comparative statement of the exports (exclusive of specie) from New York to foreign ports for the week and since January 1:— 1858. 1859. 1860. The shipment of wheat and flour to Great Britain during last week was about $705,000. Heavy shipments of cotton, provisions, oil, &e., were also made to the same country. We note a consignment of Washoe ore to Bavre. It seems pretty evident, from the tendency of trade, that we shall this year ship more prods from this port than we ever did in any previous year. The money market is called active, and brokers are paying seven per cent, in some cases, for tem- porary loans, The standard rate, however, can hardly be quoted above 6a 6}, and at the discount honses desirable paper is still very scarce. The bank statement has frightened a good many peo- ple, and for a day or two money will probably be harder to get than it was. Some of the more san- guine traders look, however, or say they look, without any apprehension, for an expansion of $135,000,000 this fall. Their idea is that the exist- ing general prosperity and the enormous increase of production this year justify a bank ex- pansion, which would have been unsafe when there was less real wealth in the country. We are not aware to what extent these views may be shared by bank managers; but if the banks are going to expand till their discount line reaches #135 ,000,000, the money market will be very uneasy thronghout the autumn. Much higher rates than those now ruling there is hardly any reason to an- ticipate. Some of the bankers have raised their rates of foreign exchange, and we now quote sterling bills 110a¢ for 60 days, and 110§ a 3 for short sight; francs being, as before, 5.13) @ 14) and 5.10; for short sight. The demand is not very active; the shippers are supplying a fair amount of mercantile bills at 1094.4 3. The Persia, which sails to-mor- row, will take out about $300,000 in specie; most of the shippers are going to wait for the Saturday's steamers, which carry gold at a lower rate. The stock market opened dull and heavy this morning, as it closed last evening, and sales of some of the railroad stocks were made at a de- cline. After the first boarda rally of } a j per cent took place; in the afternoon the market was with- out change, andstocks closed steady. The decline of the past day or two has encouraged the bears, who are hammering the market with a good deal of courage; it has also brought in some new buyers. Should the bears persevere, a new advance wouid rest ona more substantial basis than the last; with- out bears, a rising market is always treacherous. New York Central, which closed yesterday 84) bid, was done as low this morning as 84; it was ufter- wards wanted at 843, and closed that bid. Among the Western shares Galena was the most depressed. It sold in the morning downto 79, a decline of } per cent from yesterday's closing price; rallied to 79j a J, and closed 80 bid. Michigan guaranteed was also freely sold by the bears, who made contracts as low as 45f on time; it closed 46} bid, against 46) yesterday. We understand that the road is al- ready doing a fine freighting business eastward, though the lakes are open and every vessel em- ployed. Toledo was rather better; Michigan Cen- tral and Rock Island were steady at the morning board, and the same in the afternoon. Illinois Central sold down to 864, and closed 87} bid, against 86} bid at the close yesterday. The busi- ness in bonds and State stocks was light. The fol- lowing were the closing prices of the day:—United States 5’s 1874, 102} a 1034; Indiana State, 9} a 91; Virginia State 6's, 90} a 91; Tennessee State 90} 2 ¢; Missouri State 6's, 81} a 9; Canton, 194 a 20}; Cumberland Coal preferred, 14} a 154; Pacific Mail, 79§ a j; New York Central, 84} a j; Erie, 28] a 29; Hudson River, 57} a §; Harlem, 17 a 18; do. preferred, 453 a 464; Reading, 46 }; Michigan Central, 71] @ 72; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 22 a 4; do. guaranteed, 46} a 4; 124 a 125; linois Central, 87) a j; Gale- na and Chicago, 80 a {; Cleveland and Toledo, 47} a4; Chicago and Rock Island, 82} a j: Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, 8%); Delaware, Lackawa- na and Western, 95; Illinois Central bonds, Mh a 9; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 94}; Pennsylvania Coal, 83}.
