BE PROMISES TO COME OUT HIMSELF. TO THR KDMOR OF THE HERALD. Lexinoton, Ky., Auguet 20, 1860. Deak Sin—Being on @ short visit to this city, I avail myeeif of the opportunity to address you a note in regard to the rumors and statements now in circulation by the opposition parties relative to Mr. Breckinridge, of a most injurious character. The villifiers and traducers of the character and polit! cal principles of Mr. Breckinridge, who charge him with being a traitor and disunioniet, have endeavored, by skil- ful migrepresentations and inuendoes, to delude the peo- ple into the belief that euch is the hopelessness of the national constitutional democratic party that Mr. Brock- inridge bas been, or will be, induced to withdraw from the coming Presidential contest, and that be himself bag called a consultation of his friends in this regard. It is an easy matterffor cvprincipled anonymous cor- respondents to make the most improbable statgments, bashed up to suit the occasion, and for the opposition Press to give them weight and importance by editorial comments, in order to deceive and mislead the unsus- pecting. It may be neceasary to state, therefore, that ‘these rumors and statements are utterly false and without any foundation whatever. Every confidence may be reposed in the unflidthing firmncss of Mr. Breckinridge as the gallant standard bearer of our prin- ciplee—‘Constitutional rights, the Union and equality of the States’’—by which he is determined to stand or fall. Tam authorized by the Vice President to say that he will himself shortly reply to all these base charges and false assertions, either by letter or in a public speech. Mr, Breckinridge has every confidence of carrying his own State, as the late fusion of the Douglasites with the Know Nothings cannot be considered as any test of the vote in the coming Presidential election. Noman in the State of Kentucky Js more beloved or personally popular than Mr. Breckinridge, and many of the Douglasites and Bellites who now 80 bitterly oppose him were formerly his ardent admirers and supporters, and predicted, a(ter his nomination as Vice Preeident, that be would become the next President of the United States. Young america will fulfil that prediction. Very reepectiully, your obedi- ent servant, SAM. C. REID, Jr., of Louisiana, SHIPPING NEWS. Movements of Ocean Steamers. FROM EUROPS.
