The bank statement of to-day compares as fol- lows with that of last week:— Week End’g. Loans. cle. Circudation, Aug. 11..9120,855,179 21,575,740 9,129,835 ‘Aug. 18.. 120,950,348 21,008,701 9,088,648, Deposits. 82,879,107 $2,750,116 $507,080 © 42,187 122,991 The bad feature of this statement is that itshows no contraction in the loans. Every one expected a moderate reduction, instead of which we have a small increase. The bank discounts are now within a jtrifle of $130,000,000—an expansion almost without parallel. Should any unforeseen disaster occur while the banks are in this expanded con- dition, most serious consequences would ensue. We find, on examining the statement, that the bank movement has been quite irregular, some banks having pursued a conservative policy, while others have done the very contrary. For instance, the American Exchange Bank, the Chemical, the Conti- nental, the Mechanics’, the Mercantile and the Park have decreased their loans, while increasing their specie reserve; the Broadway, the Commerce, the Merchants’, the New York and the Republic have lost specie, but have reduced their loans in propor- tion; the Importers and Traders’ and the State Bank have increased both loans and specie; but the Manhattan—which is ever foremost in the wrong course—the Bank of America, the Metropolitan and the Phenix have increased their loans, while their specie reserve has rundown. Comment on the comparison is needless. ‘The money market is without change, though some brokers seem to be paying more for money than others, Money was freely lent to-day on call at six per cent, and left with the established houses in Wall street at five. Atthe discount houses the rates are, for first class paper, 6 a 7, according to length; and 7a& for good paper, not of the highest grade. The brokers report that the banks are not absorbing as much paper as they were, and that the supply in the street is more copious. The Sub-Treasury did a fair business to day; the receipts were $222,350; the payments $125,372; the balance this eveuing $5,999,352, A fair business was done to-day in foreign ex- change for the Cunard steamer from Boston on Wednesday. A leading house sold sterling sight at 1094, which is { less than most of the foreign houses have been ing: most of the drawers continue to ask 110 for their 60 day bills. For francs the rate ranges from 5.13) a 5.14], less a brokerage, for long bills, and 5.10} for short sight. The Europa, from Boston, will not probably take much specie. A large shipment will probably be made on Satur- day, from this port, in the Adriatic and Edinburg. The stock market opened dull to-day, as usual on Monday, and throughout the day business was limited. There was no stock offering, however, and a very slight increase in the demand caused prices to improve after the first board, and to re- main firm at the improvement till the close of business hours. Central, which was sold to-day, for the first time, ex-dividend, was dealt in ot 84, that being the closing bid, an advance of { e Saturday afternoon. The dividend is being paid at the usual places. Galena advanced | per cent, with a large business. An officer of the road writes that the third week's increase will be greater than that of the second; that the lowa extension is supplying the road with a great deal of business, and that the Galena will resume its old rank before long. Iinois Central was lower in the morning, but on receipt of foreign news it advanced, and closed at S6j bid. The road delivered, on Satur- day, at Chicago,.62,800 bushels grain, 314 )bis. flour, and 110,620 Ibs. sugar; at Cairo, 300 a 400 tons flour, grain, Ac., &c. Rock Island and Toledo were about steady; the Michigan Southern shares fell off; the Michigan Central improved j per cent. Evie was rather active, and at the close was | higher thea on Saturday. Harlem was quiet; we under- stand that arrangements have been made by which a train will hereafter be run in connection with the Central, so that passengers may be ticketed through over the Harlem to Buffalo and the West. Pa- cific Mail and Panama were both steady, but inac- tive. The business in bonds and tate atocks was light, and no change took place in prices. The market at the close was steady.
