"THE YACHT SQUADRON. Whe Fleet at New Bedford—The Regatta in the Bay—Dissolution of the Squad- ron—A Grand Fishing Excursion—En- tertaimment to the Yachtemen, dc. OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE. New BuprorD, August 15, 1840. Now Bedford is to-day alive with exoitement. Stores fare closed, flags are flying, the wharves and shipping « thronged with people looking on tho beautiful scene pre wented by the assembled array of yachts, steam whisties are blowing off their hallelujabs, the old fort at the ev trance of the harbor is crowned with bunting and crino- Hine, mansions along the shore are similarly decorated, sailboats fled with ladies, and skeleton racers arc flit- ting over the water, the road which ekirte the bay is Mined with carriages and people, three or four steamers with « freight of gay company are preparing to start om the excursion, the air is cool, the sky flecked with huge bunches of fleecy clouds, and the entire scene wears an aspect of life and loveliness that is beautiful to look upon, In tie fleet everything is likewise bustling and busi- ness like. The note of preparation resounds on all sides. The men are bending on sails, getting down useless ham- per, shifting ballast, trimming ship, getting in their boats, clearing the decks of everything not absolutely necessary in the race, and doing whatever may be re- quired to develope the best features of the respective craft ‘The wind is blowing gently from the northward, and, though not what the yachtsmen ask for, 1s sufficiently fresh to invest the occasion with’a considerable degree of interest. The following are the sailing directions, which, on printed slips, were circulated through the flect previous to the start:— SHE REGATTA OF THE NEW YORK YACHT SQUADRON, AT NEW BEDFORD, AUGUST 15, 1860, Sailing Directions. ‘The yachts will rondesvous at Clark’s Point at half-past ten o'clock A. Third Class—Schooner Bovita and sloop Narragansett, Those yachts which did not partivipate in the race either accompanied the regatta or remained at their an- chorage. Among the lattor was the little Norma, owned by tbe Messrs. Major, which was decorated from stem to stern, above and below, with fags, streamers and signals. In this connection your reporter desires to correct an error in his account of the sail from Newport to New Bed- ford yesterday, when it was stated that the Madgie led the Beet first arrived off Duncan light. The ui was not very dark. We take the facts a ststea by + chief officer of the Hermana. He was on deck at the time and bad genera! charge of the vessel, and by the third malty ‘whose watch was on deck, and witnessed the colli- ir 6tatements concur, and are concise. The chict mate says he was walking ‘on the port side of the quarter deck, and ou hearing the bells indicating ax object in view on the port bow he stepped forward on the paddle box and discovered the object om the port bo #, and immediately gaye the order to port helm, which was obeyed. He thought the object was a vessel standing 4] the eastward. after the order the Hermana began to come round 10 the southward and was approachiag the vessel and he then discovered it was under sail, but not clearly enough to enable bim to determine how she was Standing, be however repeated the order, “hard aport” which was answered; that after this ‘he dis. covered the veseel was standing by the wind, which was from the northwest, but could not tell which and he then gave the third order ‘hard port” which was also anawered, and then and not it became ovident that the vessel was standing oa tarboard tack, and this not over a minute and a halt before the collision. The Herman was going at tho rate of eleven miles an hour, neither slackened ber speed, slowed nor backed up unti after the collision. The negbt ‘could not have been very dark, fur both the chief and third officer say that they discovered the object, which turned out to be @ veesel,on her starboard k close hauled a mile and @ balf distant. The chief officer admits if he had known the position of the Reindeer, that ior helm to einsbonrd insteed of givig the order to pot, im to etaz iv! wo , and that if Le had done so the he ermen bot under her stern.
