Yesterday, as Announced, the Grealgustern took her de- partare from our waters after a stay of nearly two modths, The interest which her arrival excited and the manner in which that interest was exhibited wil, be long remembered. Indeed, very seldom have the peo ple turned out so generally, and very rarely have their ex Citability been so aroused, as on the occasion referred to, On Thursday morning, the 28th June, it was telographed that the Great Rastern had arrived at Sandy Hook, and almost instantancously fled the tidings through this and ‘the neighboring cities, It was also announced that she would leave her anchorage below at three o'clock and steam up the harbor to the dock at the foot of Hammond street, which had been selected for her. From the mo- mont that the fact, so loug anxivusly looked for, was made known, there was immediate preparation made to receive hor with becoming éclat. Ex- cursion steamers were got ready, and crowds of People hasted to procure places thereon. Fleets of yachts ‘were manned, and small vessels of put in requisition, and long before tho” ted time the waters of the harbor were covered with fotillss gay with flags and streamers, Every available spot from the Battery to Hammond street, on either side of the water was densely’ crowded with anxious spectators, assembled” to gaze upon what had been so often represented as onc of the mechanical triumphs of the age, and to biend their greetings with the roar ef cannon prepared tw welcome the stranger. Thus was tho reception hastily got up which the Great Eastern met ou ber arrival. But tho people were not content at looking at her as ahe steamed to her dock, or gazing upon ber vast and beautiful pro- portions us she lay at auchor thero; but they thronged day after day, at fity cents a head, to visit and examine her, until the number who had thus, iu this city and dusizng ber excursions South, been on board of her amounted to 175,000 people. Almost vieing with her ‘triumphal entry on the 28th of June was her trip down the barbor on the occasion of her excursion to Cape May: but with that ended the palmy days of the Great Eastern. So vilely and wretchedly managed was that affair that it may be said to have sealed the fate of the Great Eastern as an object of interest and attraction in the excursion line. Though some 1,800 persons went on the excursion to Cape May, only some onc hundred ceald be found hardy enough to proceed with her on the trip to Norfolk and Annapolis, and most of these were Southera residents on their return home. As an object of attrac, tion to visiters at her wharf, however, it was protty evi- dept from the number that crowdei on board on Wed- nesday last that she etill excited a good deal of interest among the persons at a distance, and that ag a spectacie | she might take a little longer, Bat the days of her triumph in this city were prssed, and she was withdrawn nota day too room. She is now gone, and will in a little time be as completly forgotten as Tommy, the litude Japanese, and quicker so than the “Japs” ag a body, for the Corporation bad nothing to do witb ber visit, and there was nothing for them to make out of her. But how different was ber final departure yesterday to her arrival. Thon, as we before remarked, the psuple | made one of their greatest demonstrations; she entered our harbor amid booming of cannons, and with (idl culty threaded her majestic way through the thousands of her pigmy kind, who ste: aod sailed around her. The strains of numerous bands greeted her while deafen. ing cheers resounded on overy side from the mailtitate on land and water who had assembled to join in the oration to her. Yesterday the scene was changed, entirely changed, but in one respect. Tho clemoots a8 they have been since she came here, were fayorabic, cloudless sky ana warm san'poured @ flood of silvery light before her prow as she steamed away upon her voy age. But the crowds of admiring pooplo wore wanting, the gay steamers and the swift gliding yachts ani the ea- thusiasm were ail non est, and almost as quietly and un- osteptatiously asone of ‘our buble coasters did the Great Eastern steal over the waters, which but a short time before she walked so proudly Bat, perhaps, this 1s as {t ought to bo; at a!l ovente it is the inevitable conclurton to all city sensations Our mo tropolitans have a most insatiable maw for the marvel Jous, for the niac days’ wonder, sad as cach Sensation upon the appetite, they must be gorget with gome thiog uew aud fresh. The committee of gentlemen appointed at a recent public meeting of Christian laymen and ministers to de- vise the best meaps for the early relief of the unhappy survivore of the brutal and atrocious persecutions in Sy- ria met at the roome of the Tract Society, 160 Nasawu street, at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. On motion, Peletiah Porit, Req., was unanimously called to the chair. ‘The Rev. Dr. Baixp opened the proceedings with a brief but appropriate prayer. Mr. Hinax Kerenv drew attention to the fact that the Proceed ings under which the committeo were acting was not altogethor a commendable one, Ie thought there was a necessity for a difforent kind of organization. He had bimaolf taken a great deal of interest in the year 1887 for the unfortunate Greeks, whose voice of distress had reached this country. The greatest interest was at that time displayed on behalf of the Groeks. I: did not appear to him that this was the case with the Christian Syrians, though theirs was a cuee that ought to atir our very souls, He did not think that avy partial action ehould be taken | in this matter, because the circumstances concerned tho whole Christian world, Tho Protestanta Lind taken tho | initiative, although their fellow religionists had not suf- fered in any comparison with the Roman Catholics. There should, thercfore, be @ general movement of Catholics and Protestants, unlets it was expocted that assistance was only to be sent for their own missionaries to be distributed among Protestants. But if they were to move on behalf ef crushed Christianity, then ali Christians should move together. He doubted’ the cxpodiency of their meeting simply a8 Protestants. Tho gravo events in Syria were interesting the British aad French govern nents, aod in a short time all the Christian nutions of the earth mast take a part in it. He thought that they, a¢ a Christian e, would not lag betind; but ny Movewont made ‘Ww the suiering without distinc- tion of creed. For hia part bo did not want to actasa Protestant only, but ag a Christian, with bis Roman Catho- lic bretbren. The CHamaax said that they liad met as the representa- tives of the various Protestant churches of America, and of course, they were realy to co-operate with Protestauts everywhere. But it a) to him that they could not go easily co operate with Roman Uatholics He would like to know if the y could co operate with Catbolies’ He did not think that guch a course wns feasible, and any attempt to bring it about wonld be futile, and only tend to defeat the ts they had in view. He did not, in fact, opiac | that Toman Catholics would bo willing to act with | hein. Mr. Keene inquired of the chairman whether it was | ao to raise relict for the Protestants of Syria | jone. ‘The Crarmwan said no such thing was intended, The funds raised would be applied to the retief of the suifer ing, Without distinction of religious creeds.
