All the wieamers leaving Baltimore during the entire day with geromaue t© g0 on beard the great ship were almost uneotnfertably crowded, while the immense trains of | ture when feft the Camden #treet depot were 80 weil | Biles that many were compeled to wutusly themselves With “etandeo places.” The frst train, which started out | ‘Bt quarter-past seven o'clo-k in the morning, numbered teen care, all filed to their utmost capscity. Everything of this nature was sur- pasecd, however, at the time it was understood that the eames | Liladelptia was qbout to leave for Baitimore. 4 PANIC wae the result. It most be remembered that about this time the ship was thronged from stem to stern, upon deck and below, among the machinery, in the cabins, acd in fact in every piace where curiosity would lead the visit ers. ‘The sign poet, bearing the words, “This way out,” mdicated to those who wished to jeave the ship taat by descending two Lights of steps into a capacious apart- ment, used for storage ad lighted only by a batchway und two irou doorways, they could accomplish thew de- sires. Down in place the passengers at once hur- ried themselves. The room, though larger than many of our moderate sized concert balls, was partially filled with furniture, rubbish, roges, &c. AK mutter of course, all the available space for standing was soon occupied by the peopie, who came down in a constant stream. The Btair- Wwaye were soon choked up with the mass of humanity, The apartment was packed with men, women and chi}- dren. The air became stifling, and many tainted. The money market is rather more active to- day, and rates are @ shade firmer, Several lenders state that they are patting out nothing op call under 6 per cent, and many borrowers admit that they are paying 5}. Still there is a good deal of money seeking employment at5 per cent, Mercantile paper is still searce, but the brokers say that rates are about 4 per cent higher; say 3% for short prime, and 6} for the best six months’ notes. It is generally believed that the banks will show a curtailment next week; some of the bank men profess to look upon an expansion of $135,000,000 withont any evil conseqnences be- tween this and October, The Sob-Treasury bnsi- ness to-day was fair; the receipts were $298,142, of which $234,000 from customs; the payments, ),107; the balance this evening, $5,805,763. Tle market for foreign exchange has hardly opened for Saturday’s steamers; the asking rates at the leading drawers ave the same, to wit: 109] a 110 for sixty day bills on London, and 110} for short sight; for bills on Paris, 5.13) a 5.14} for sixty day bills, and 5.19§ for short sight. The bulk of the business for Saturday’s steamers will be done to-morrow. From present appearances the ship- ment of gold on Saturday wit he from a million and a quarter to 4 million and « half; this, how- ever, pe increased to-morrow should the ex- change market harden, or the bullion brokers low- er the price of bars. This has been another very active day in the stock market. A very large numbgr of buyers at lower prices realized protit to-day; but for each seller at least two bnyers appear to enter the market. The speculative classes, not only in this city, bunt in Boston, Philadel- phia, Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis and throughout the country, appear to have suddenly awakened to the prospect of making money by buying stocks; the telegraph is kept busy all day with messages to brokers, directing purchases to be made; and thus, notwithstanding the sales which teke place daily, the market continues to advance. The phenomenon’ takes most of the brok- ers by surprise; butafter all, the Wall street opera- tors and the old holders of railway stocks—who are the sellers at present—are an infinitely small body fa comparison with the outside public. Every buy- ey of stocks within the past month has made money; could it be expected, under the circumstances, that there would be any lack of buyers at present? The declaration of the three per cent dividend on the New York Central was received favorably in the street, being regarded as an indication that the future policy of the company would be comserva tive. \ The stock advanced at one time to 89, clos- ing 88} bid after the second board—an advance of 1{. Toledo sold at 49, an advance of 1} over yesterday's closing price; 484 was freely bid at the close of business.
