No Clue to the Affair—The Blood Pro- nownced Human—Rumors—The Maa it a White Coat—Statement of William Smith, dée., dic. Nothing definite has as yet been ascertained in refe- rence to the supposed murder at Long Branch, and as far as obtaining any clue to the perpetrator or his victim, the whole affair is shrouded in as much mystery as be- fore. That a foul deed of some terrible nature was com- mitted on Monday night or Tuesday morning, on the beach near the Monmouth House, there can scarcely be ® doubt when the mass of proof i taken into consideration. There are some at Long Braneh who are disposed to treat the matter asa grand hoax, got up by some one as a practical joke, etther for the purpose of alarming the visiters at the beach and the community, or as @ method of gratifying a personal grudge against the proprietors of the public houses in the vicinity; but to the minds of those who are cognizant of the facts of the case, and who have seen the club, sail, blood, and the other silent but speaking witneases to the deed, the mattor assumes the shape of a terrible reality. ‘Throughout Tuesday large numbers of people visited the scene of the murder, and considerable excitement was manifested, but as the Coroner has possession of the chub, sail, and other articles found on the ground, and the Vide having washed away all traces of the deed, the ex- citement bas very much subsided, Tuesday morning ft was thought that a man by the name of Joe West, a resident of Long Branch, might be the victim, as he was unaccountably missing; but it was soon after ascertained that he was out at the lower end of the beach fishing. Mr. McLean, District Attorney for the county, arrived at Long branch yesterday, and in company with Coroner Morris, was busy in investigating the mystery. Dr. T. T. Chattle has analyzed the blood, and pronounces it human, ‘The following is a detailed account of the affair, and in- cludes all the facts which have thus far come to light:— About half past twelve on the night of Monday, the 6th instant, Mr. Donaldson, stage.agent of the Long Branch and Keyport line, was at the Monmouth House, and saw two men come down from the National Hotel (which is further back from the beach than the Monmouth), to the beach, fire two pistol shots, and then return, Seve- ral others heard the pistol shots. About an hour after this Mr. Donaldson started to go to Congress Hall, situdted beyond the National, and he then saw three men coming from the latter house, one of whom wore a white coat. Soon after he had entered the bar of Congress Hall he heard another and a third Pistol shot, but thought nothing of it at the time. Monday night, about nine o'clock, a party of excursion- iste from Newark, numbering some three hlndred per- sons, came to Long Branch. With these excursionists came three men, one of them described as being a tall, muscular, rufflanly looking fellow, who wore a white coat. These men were observed to inquire the way to the National Hotel four times in succession of diferent parties, and that when within a short distance of the house, They did not inquire like those who wished for information, but rather as if they wished to make sport of the questioned. Nothing more was thought of this occurrence, however, until after the discovery of the murder. ‘Tuesday morning, about half past four, William Smith, ‘an old and well known fisherman, started in company with another fisherman, named Peter Slocum, for bis boat, intendin; arriving at bis ling to put out to sea, Eihermant who had followed They then back Gaye Genrer went uy atu traces of he strogtionthe hob, the bud and bar he is fest aaybreak, which accounts for the ing their notice when they The club isa; length, and plit pine stick, about i covered at end with blood and hair. one is shade darker than avburn, and is short. A circumstance {a reference to the bair is, that no roots can be found, so that it must have been either off or cut with the club. Part of one gunwale of the bost was also covered with hair and blood, and on the head of the sail there is large ronnd spot of ‘bleod, as if a man's head bad Iain there. It is au that the'body was laid into the fail, and then covered over with it, 30 a8 to avoid detection in case the murderer or or meet Pi the indentations of opper and be seen. After the discovery of the murder it transpired that on Tuesday morning, about four o'clock, a farmer livin in the vicinity met a two horse top wagon Redbank, with the curtains up, and two men it tides the driver, one of these two men wearing a white coat. This white costed individual was afterwards seen on board the steamboat Alice Price, bound for New fork, and it was noticed that bis pantaloons, also white, were stained with something very like, if not in reality, blood. The Coroner was also informed that of the waiters at the National Hotel bad been men, one of whom carried bis shces in the house with a lantern ata very late On questioning the man, however, it tbat the two men were fellow im the house, who bad been visiting their fellows in the main building, aod were fearful of dist: ing gems io Reine to their own quarters. » ational |, informs us that pone of his guests, wait- ers or servapis, are missing, and this occurrence is pro- badly what gave rise to the rumor that two of his segroes off. had gone off.
