The Abolition Plot in Texas—Further Par- tieulars. {From the Houston (Texas) Telegraph, July 28 } From Dallas we learn that one or two white men have been hung. From Waxahachie we b seen aletter written by a merchant to * correspondent in this city, which gives some of the details of a conspiracy there to murder the people and destroy the town, in a mannet similar to that of Dallas. The plot was to have been carried out last Sunday. It was discovered, however, and two white men, whose names are not given, were hung on Sat- urday last, the 2ist inst. Some twenty odd negroes were to be hung next week. t. Crader, who is just down from the upper country, confirms the accounts we have received from Dr. Pryor. He states that in Dallas they have eight or ten negroes, who appeared to be ringleaders, in confinement. They will prob- ably be hung. In Waxahachie the discovery was made thi voluntary confesmon of @ negro women to Mr. Marehbanks ‘Throughout the whole region, embracing Dal- jas, Ennis, Tarrant, and ton counties, the testimony of the m has been the same They have all agreed in saying that they were to burn the houses aud murder the women on the first Monday in August. They were then to attack the people at the polls, aided by the reinforcement of the expected abolition band, and having got possession of arms, previsions, ete., fight their way to Mexico. At Waxahachie, as appeared by the confes- sion of the negroes, a negro was detailed to burn that place on the 8th, the same day as the fire at Dallas and Denton, but while in town for the purpose, @ box of matches acci- deatally got on fire in the store of Angelman & Garrison, and the alarm so frightened the negro that he fled from the town. Afterward, as he was about to carry out his instructions, a Hiegro, who had come fifteen miles for the pur- pose in the night, informed him that the plot ad been discovered in Dallas, and they were hanging all the negroes, and warned him to drop the matter. This saved Waxahachie. [From the Galveston News, July 28 } We learn from a gentleman, a resident of Ellis county, who left Waxahachie on Monday last, and arrived this morning, some further details of the results of the discovery of the diabolical abolition plot, which was to swee over northern Texas with the incendiary’s torch and murderer's weapon. In Dallas and Ellis counties, committees, composed of the coolest, steadiest and inost re- spectable citizens, were appointed, and were at work all last week investigating the whole affair. No one but those immediately inter- ested knows who compose the committces, nor where or when they meet, or what they are doing. The chief object is to ascertain what whites are at the bottom of the plot. Noone else interferes in the investigation. In Ellis, the county court has organized pa trois on an extensive and well managed system. The negroes’ confessions—made apart and at great distances—concur in the leading points ; and all aver white men originated the plot ana directed their movements. They promised the negroes their liberty and their master’s goods, etc., and to lead them to Kansas; the negroes were told also that the next President would be a Northern man, who would free them all. The negroes concerned in Ellis county were principally of mature age and those allowed by their owners a good deal of liberty. The young ones were not allowed to participate in the plot: and many were not trusted with the seeret at all. Their idea was to burn ail the stores where arms and ammunition were kept ; and on elec- tion day—the 6th of August, when the citizens were away from their farms and houses—the negroes were to rise, seize on all the arms, and headed by their white leaders, to attack the houses here and there, murder defenseless wo- men, burn and destroy, and, finally. it is pre- sumed, march off in a body toward Kansas Waxahachie was to have been set fire to on the 6th—the same day Dallas and so many other places were fired; but an accidental fire in the town, that day, aroused the citizens.and the negro appointed to the deed became alarm- ed pe left. He was to have returned and repeated the attempt last Sunday, had not the plot been discovered. A letter from Austin states that several at- tempts at incendiarism have recently been made in that city, and that, in consequence, there is great excitement, and the citizens are patrolling every night. ee Exciting Arrarm at Hawictox, Onto.— Shooting of a Citizen by a Prominent Law- yer .—The Cincinnati Gazette of August 4, says ** We learn by passengers on the train over the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Road last evening, that an exciting shooting affair took place in the city of Hamilton yesterday after- noon. The history of it, with the preceding circumstance, are about as follows: A minister over one of the religious congregations of the city received several anonymous communica- tions through the postoffice, in which the au- thor professed a desire to join his church, but did not wish to become associated with such ersons as certain ladies of his congregation ‘hese letters were finally shown to the hus- band of one of the ladies, a prominent mer- chant, who thought he recoguised the hand- writing of another citizen, and su) uently charged him with being the euthor of the slan- derous communication, and a rencounter fol- lowed. This occurred several days ago. The fact finally came to the knowledge of one of the most prominent lawyers of Hamilton, that the samo anonymous calumniator had attacked his wife in the same contemptible way, and taking means to satisfy himself of the author- ship, resolved to inflict summary punishment. While passing slong the street yesterday after- noon, in a buggy, he discovered the su: ewe author of the letters in a store, and ally tin, from bis wagon, he walked in and peda oa. an attack by firing at him with a revolver. ‘The individual attacked attempted to escape, and succeeded in so far avoiding his assailant as to all but one shot, which took effect in the ider, inflicting a severe but not a dengerous wound. The interference of other parties present put an end to the affair for the time being. Much excitement existed throughout the city, all the parties to the scandal being among the most prominent and well-known citizens. For reasons which will themselves, we forbear givin names, which may, perhaps, be made public through an investigation Temprratcre or Warer ar a Derrn or 2.575 Fext.—The Columbus (0).) Journal says: --We are indebted to the kindness of Professor Wormly for the following information in re- to the temperature of the Artesian well in this city. A. Walferdin’s registering ther- mometer, contained in a glass tube filled with water, and this tube enclosed in an iron one nearly filled with water, and closed perfectly tight, was sunk in the well, afew days since, toa h of 2,475 feet, at which place it re- mai for twenty-five hours. It was then lowered to the bottom of the well, a depth of 2.575 feet, and there remained for forty min- utes. Upon the withdrawal of the ther- mometer it was found to have registered 53 deg. Fahrenheit, which may be assumed to be the temperature at the bottom of the well. In Paris, atad of ninety feet, a thermometer has continued without variation at a tempera- ture of 53 deg. Fahrenheit for nearly two cen- turies. The Artesian well at Louisville, Ky., at a depth of 2,086 feet, showed a temperature of 82) Fahrenheit, — inerease of 1 deg. for every sixty-seven feet. From the above reports it would that the temperature below Columbus did not increase as rapidly as in most other places where observations have been mad: YF fen peee —A class of sensible women, ~~» ass wee husband until they find some one can and po ae. esteem—which, of conges, THE WEEKLY STAR otis cee aa geekete oo 7” o%, XVI.
